AUGUST 15TH, 2021—SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Page 974-2
“The gift that keeps on giving.” You’ve seen and heard that compliment given to everything from diapers to diamonds and everything in between. Sometimes it’s derisive; sometimes complimentary. Here are two instances of same: 1. “To my co-workers, that old video of me acting like an idiot is the gift that keeps on giving. Teasing me about it is their favorite pastime. 2. “I’m telling you, my membership at that gym has been great. I’ve made so many new friends, strengthened my body, and reduced my anxiety.” Just a pair of innocuous statements, untinged with any of the sarcasm that often is used about such gifts. But now let me take you to a higher plain, up where the air is rare, to the realm where dwells the loveliest crea-ture God ever made. Call her “the lovely Lady dressed in blue” or any one of a hundred titles. She, of course, is the Virgin Mary, once described by the poet Wordsworth as “Our tainted nature’s solitary boast.” Ah, the pow-er poets have, to say better than what we might like to say! She is, was, and always will be our “gift that keeps on giving” from God Himself. I always find myself on the verge of getting all choked up when it comes to thinking or talking about Mary. I know I’m not an innocent like the three children at Fatima or Bernadette at Lourdes. I also know and believe how she helped saved the world and everyone in it from a gloomy destiny by her simple “Fiat” (Let it be done) to the awestruck Gabriel. Add to that all the pain she endured because she didn’t hesitate to say “yes.” From nursing her Holy Child in a crude cave to holding His corpse in her lap a little over three decades later to form the original “Pieta.” And all the other hurts that came to her heart that we know about. Now is it any wonder that a loving God, joyful beyond words that at least one of His creatures corresponded perfectly to His plan for her, would not take her, body and soul, to His dwelling place? Here is how the official words of the Catechism of the Catholic Church describes it: “…the Immaculate Virgin, preserved from all stain of original sin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things, so that she might be the more fully conformed to her Son, the Lord of lords and con-queror of sin and death. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin is a singular participation in her Son’s Resurrection and an anticipation of the resurrection of other Christians.” Picking up on that last phrase, about our future resurrection, we have a guaranteed future with her, as long as we don’t sabotage it by unrepented sin. For anyone who drives by a cemetery and is led to wonder what will hap-pen to him or her after death, there’s your answer. Someone stolidly said, I grant you, but said nonetheless, by the one body chosen by Christ to say it. I find the doctrinal statement to be inestimable comfort for the family members gathered around the deathbed of a loved one in the ICU ward of a hospital. Incomparable consolation for a penitent who has just confessed a serious mortal sin and heard the words of absolution prayed over her or him. Marvelous attention from her lis-tening ear for anyone just having the kind of day when a hug from her would be welcome. I can vouch for Mary’s attentive response and loving assistance given to me over the years for issues I faced, both large and small, right down to the composition of this very reflection. Obviously none of us are deserving of a bodily assumption. Even the great saints would admit that. Hers was a singular event, as the Catechism put it. None of us are sinless. But as our immaculate Mother, she prays for us her adopted children, and wants us to join her in eternal joy. Some day we will be able to see her with our own eyes as she welcomes us to heaven, looking on us with her lustrous and magnetic smile. I believe that very antic-ipated meeting is why we pray as often as we can: “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.”
God love you and give you His peace! Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson

¡Dios te ame y te dé Su paz! Reflexión del Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
