    Consider a tree for a moment. As beautiful as trees are to look we don't see

    what grows underground. Trees must develop roots in order to grow strong

    and produce their beauty. But we don't see the roots. We just see and enjoy

    the beauty. In much the same way, what goes on inside of us is like the roots

    of a tree.

    vemos o que cresce no subsolo. As rvores precisam desenvolver razes para crescerem fortes

    One of the most important responsibilities of a

    school which has by motto to change the world onechild a time is with no doubt to give its students to

    notion of Roots and Wings. Teaching them in a way

    they could not only acquire a strong sense of

    individuality, but also know, understand, and assume

    the responsibility of been part of a group. At the same

    time instil, through love and respect, the necessary

    confidence to spread their wings and fly, as citizens

    of the world, willing to change their sorrounding

    environment through their actions and statements.To know herself/himself as a citizen of the world

    imply in knowning that the wolld is one and the

    differences must not be reason for prejudice, instead,

    we must respect these differences, as we know that,

    to use the words of Comenius we all need help

    because were all humans ,and therefore,

    imperfects.Thereby we reached the conclusion that it is

    necessary to give thestudents, involved in theproject, the oportunity to know and di scuss stories of

    people who overcame prejudice and became modern

    heroes, capable to teach all of us principles and

    values that will certainly, make us better people.Then came the idea of creating a magazine using

    the learning experiences of the students themselves,

    who participated in the writing of the articles in this

    issue. They share in this issue, what they learned

    during the project and how what theyve learned

    contributed to their own growth as individuals. We

    believe that the project has achieved to foster in

    students a better understanding of the world in which

    they live, expanding their horizons and opening thei r

    minds.

    Uma das responsabilidades fundamentais de uma

    escola que tem por motivao transformar o mundocomeando por cada um de seus alunos sem dvida

    dar a esses alunos a noo de Roots and Wings

    (razes e Asas). Ensin-los de forma que adquiram um

    forte senso de individualidade, mas tambm

    conheam, entendam e assumam a responsabilidade

    de pertencer a um grupo. Ao mesmo tempo incutir

    nesses alunos, atravs do amor e respeito a confiana

    necessria para abrir asas e voar, como cidados do

    mundo dispostos a mudar o ambiente que os cerca

    atravs de suas aes e colocaes.Conhecer-se como cidado do mundo implica em

    saber que o mundo nico e que as diferenas no

    devem e no podem ser motivo de preconceito, ao

    contrrio, preciso respeit-las sabendo-se que,

    parafraseando Comenius, ns todos precisamos de

    ajuda, pois somos todos humanos, e portanto,

    imperfeitos.Ass im sen do, che gam os con clu so da

    necessidade proporcionar aos alunos envolvidos no

    projeto, a oportunidade de conhecer e discutir histrias

    de pessoas que venceram o preconceito e se tornaram

    heris modernos, capazes de ensinar a todos ns

    preceitos e valores que nos faro melhores como

    pessoa.Surgiu ento a ideia de criar uma revista

    utilizando as experincias de aprendizagem dos

    prprios alunos, que participaram da escrita dos

    artigos. Eles compartilham nessa edio o que

    aprenderam durante o projeto e como os

    ensinamentos recebidos contribuiro para seu prprio

    crescimento como indivduos. Cremos que o projeto

    tenha conseguido promover nos alunos um melhor

    entendimento do mundo em que vivem, ampliando

    seus horizontes e abrindo suas mentes.

    I am learning about prejudice inmy school, and we concludedthat it is not good and we can put

    an end and overcame prejudice.This can benefit many people who asad with it and being offended. it willhelp people to not cry, and not bet r ea t ed d i f f e r en t ly becauseeverybody must be treated equal.Think about this change; everybodyloving each other, never cryingbecause we are all people and allequal.Jesse Owens is an examplle of a man that sufferedprejudice, but this didnt embarraced his life because heovercame it and was a successful athelete in the OlympicGames.So, think about this and change the world because togetherwe can stop prejudice.

    I was born in Oakville, Alabama, in 1913.My family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, when Iwas nine years old. My family worked hard, butearned little money.

    I joined the track team in high school andpracticed every morning. I tied a world record inthe 100-yard dash. At Ohio State University, Iset world records for the long jump, the 220-yard dash, and the hurdles.

    In 1936 I participated in the SummerOlympic Games in Berlin, Germany. I won fourgold medals, proving wrong Hitler's view thatwhite Germans were better than everyone else.Winning at the Olympics was a wonderfulexperience

    Harriet Tubman was born about 1820and was originally named Araminta Ross. She

    was born to slaves Benjamin Ross and Harriet

    Greene on a plantation in Dorchester Country,

    Maryland. She was one of eleven children in

    her family. In 1844, her slave master allowed

    her to marry John Tubman, who was a free

    black man. By this time, Harriet had taken her

    mother's first name. When her slave master

    and his heir died, Harriet's status as a slavewas in question, because her freedom had

    never been granted. Rather than take any

    chances, she moved to the north without her

    husband. While living in Pennsylvania, Harriet

    got involved with the abolitionist cause. She

    became a conductor on the Underground

    Railroad, which helped slaves escape from the

    South. The Underground Railroad was anetwork of people who helped runaway slaves

    (the passengers), the safe houses were called

    stations and people led their passengers from

    safe house to safe house. In a period of about

    ten years, Harriet helped about 300 slaves

    escape slavery in the South, guiding them to

    freedom in the North.

    Harriet Tubman nasceu por volta de 1820 e se

    chamava originalmente Araminta Ross. Tubman nasceu

    de pais escravos numa fazendano condado de

    Dorchester em Maryland. Ela era uma dos 11 filhos do

    casal Benjamin Ross and Harriet Greene. Em 1844 seu

    Negro Spirituals are religious songs that

    were created by enslaved African people in the

    United States.

    The lyrics of negro spirituals were tightly

    linked with the lives of their authors: the slaves.

    While work songs dealt only with their daily life,

    spirituals were inspired by the message of Jesus

    Christ and his Good News (Gospel) of the Bible,

    You can be saved. They are different from

    hymns and psalms, because they were a way of

    sharing the hard condition of being a slave.

    Many slaves in town and in plantations

    tried to run to a free country, that they called my

    home or Sweet Canaan, the Promised Land.

    This country was on the Northern side of Ohio

    River, that they called Jordan. Some NegroSpirituals refer to the Underground Railroad, an

    organization for helping slaves to run away. A

    fugitive could use several ways. First, they had to

    walk at night, using hand lights and moonlight.

    When needed, they walked (waded) in water, so

    that dogs could not smell their tracks. Second,

    they jumped into chariot, where they could hide

    book "Hiding to Survive" the 4th

    Graders had the opportunity to

    meet the story of people that were

    almost exterminated because of

    their religion. The book, narrated

    in the first person, tells the story of

    14 Holocaust survivors who as

    children were hidden from the

    Nazis by non-Jewish people.Children as Paulette Pomeranz, a

    Greek Jewish girl who was forced

    to live for five years away from hermother, hidden by a non-Jewish

    family in a Greece occupied by

    Hitler's troops. When Paulette's

    mother was able to flee the

    country going to the USA, she

    k e p t w r i t i n g l e t t e r s o f

    encouragement and promising to

    come back for her when the war

    was over. Paulette and other

    children survived the horrors of

    religious persecution due to

    prejudice and her story brings

    lessons that our students could

    learn: We are all equal, no matter

    the religion.

    People. The houses in my tribe are cliff dwellers. We

    build homes with adobe bricks in cliff or on top of

    mesas (or plateaus).

    We grow many crops including corn, squash, beans,

    pepper, and wheat. We make a wonderful bread

    called Paper Bread by spreading a layer of corn pasta (a mix

    of cornmeal and water) on a baking stone.

    HeroesThis is J im Thorpe. He is

    remembered as one of the greatest

    athletes of all time and one of the mostcelebrated Native Americans in modern

    times. At the 1912 Olympics, Jim Thorpe

    accomplished the unprecedented feat of

    winning gold medals in both the

    pentathlon and the decathlon. However,

    Thorpe's triumph was marred by scandal

    just months later when he was stripped of

    his medals due to a violation of his

    amateur status prior to the Olympics.

    Thorpe later played both professional

    baseball and football, but was anespecially gifted football player. In 1950,

    Associated Press sportswriters voted

    Jim Thorpe the greatest athlete of the

    half-century. JimThorpe suffered a fatal

    heart attack on March 28, 1953 dying at

    the age of 64. Through his life Thorpe

    proved people are equal, no matter their

    skin color.
