2 Midwest Clinical & Translational Research Meeting of CSCTR and MWAFMR FINAL PROGRAM • APRIL 4-5, 2019
WELCOME TO THE 2019 COMBINED ANNUAL MEETING
I hope you have been looking forward to this meeting, to learn from the most prestigious leaders in our fields and to collaborate with one another. We have a terrific program planned, including outstanding invited speakers, our traditional Department Chair sessions highlighting early career faculty at two Midwest medical schools (University of Michigan and Loyola University), “hot” new science from members and trainees presented as posters and oral sessions, and multiple mentoring opportunities. My sincere hope is that you take much good away from this meeting, which will resonate long after in your career.
CSCR (as it was then known) held its first meeting 91 years ago, in November 1928, and in October 1969 the first joint meeting of CSCTR and MWAFMR convened, making this our 51st meeting!
To start the next half century, we updated the name to “Midwest Clinical and Translational Research Meeting of CSCTR and MWAFMR.” Throughout this long history, our meeting has accomplished its mission to share research techniques and new findings, learn the latest on the management of diseases and disorders across various subspecialties of medicine, and provide career and personal development activities for early career investigators.
I extend my sincere gratitude to the Program Committee for creating an outstanding program.
Special thanks to the many reviewers required to score the numerous abstracts. Their titles are listed on page 6.
I encourage you to continue your involvement in CSCTR and/or AFMR. Check out our websites for membership information.
Timothy B. Niewold, MD CSCTR President
AFMR WELCOMEAs Chair of the Midwestern Section of the AFMR (MWAFMR), I welcome you to Chicago and the Midwest Clinical and Translational Research Meeting of CSCTR and MWAFMR. The strength of this program lies in the multidisciplinary educational offerings and collegial setting. The goal of the AFMR is to develop and mentor tomorrow’s leaders in medical research, through providing a venue to share and present research, recognize outstanding achievements in research, meet new peers and mentors, gain valuable career advice, and become involved with society service. On Thursday afternoon, during the Career Development Workshop, Dr. Dawn Davis will speak on career development grant writing and Dr. Joumana Chaiban will speak about challenges and opportunities for immigrant physician scientists. Friday morning we have an outstanding AFMR Keynote Speaker, Dr. Bradley Britigan from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. We thank you for attending! Come up and introduce yourself during the meeting and ask me how to get more involved in AFMR!
Vijay Shivaswamy, MBBS, MS Chair, AFMR Midwestern Section Council

About the American Federation for Medical Research (AFMR)The mission of the American Federation for Medical Research is to “develop and mentor tomorrow’s leaders in medical research.” The AFMR follows this mission with the goal to:
• Foster excellence in training and successful development of medical investigators• Disseminate scholarly, multidisciplinary, ethical research on human disease and health care delivery• Educate public and government leaders about medical research and the importance of its support
The AFMR’s diverse membership positions the organization as one of the few medical associations with a broad constituency. Members enjoy the ability to tap into a professional network of colleagues whose interests and expertise facilitate the “cross fertilization” of information about current issues in biomedical research. The AFMR repeatedly demonstrates how clinical and basic research efforts integrate to provide the scientific basis for medical practice. The organization’s translational aspect has broad reaching clinical applications and strengthens the fields of scientific study across multiple medical disciplines.

She has re-ceived numerous awards and honors, has published more than 200 papers and has given over 160 invited lectures at national and international conferences. The Goodyear laboratory investigates the underlying molecular mech-anisms that mediate the beneficial effects of exercise to improve metabolic health. The Goodyear lab has made numerous, fundamental discoveries on how exercise regulates multiple signaling pathways in skeletal muscle, most notably her studies of AMPK. Currently, Dr. Good-year is the PI of a Preclinical Animal Study Site (PASS) as part of the NIH-funded Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity in Humans Consortium (MoTrPAC), the goal of which is to determine the molecular footprint underly-ing the benefits of exercise on health. In addition to the consortium work, her lab has recently conducted ground-breaking studies in two areas of investigation. First, they have shown that exercise training causes adaptations to adipose tissue that improve overall glucose homeostasis. Second, they have discovered that maternal and paternal exercise has profound beneficial effects on the metabolic health of adult offspring, and elucidated novel epigenetic mechanisms for these effects. All of this work has import-ant ramifications for the prevention and treatment of numerous chronic diseases in humans.
