New Media For the Third Sector Explores the role of social and digital media tools and services in increasing the effectiveness and reach of the activities and communication of third sector organizations. The approach is based on design research and prototyping activities carried out collaboratively with a partner organization. (Usually a longer study project!) Previously: Amnesty Finland, World Health Organization, Cleaning Day, Crisis Management Institute, Aidbrella…

Amnesty International – 2007 No Torture Here! Wendland, Naukkarinen, Vaalisto, Tarkiainen, Drakvik, Leinonen, Botero

Cleaning Day / Yhteismaa– 2013 Cleaning Day treasures (Miessner, Oikkari, Laakso), Cleaning day App (Multiple contributors) and Cleaning day data dashboard (Panagiadouti)

Theme for 2015

• Relationship between violence against women (VAW) and digital media

à New technologies are used both to perpetrate violence and to fight back (seek help/organize against), what does this mean for the design of services that are digitally based?

Page 5: Final presentationthirdsector.mlog.taik.fi/files/2015/03/NMTS_naistenlinja-day5.pdf · Final presentation Designing new online support services for woman that have experience violence

Scope and aims for the WS

•  Brief 0.1: Create new possibilities for women who are experiencing violence or are survivors, to reach out and get in touch with a local NGO active in this field. How to do this through digital means?

à  We expect well defined concepts for new services (and

related tools) that the NGO can continue developing –or take into use – after the WS

à  Note: Campaigns are interesting and needed, but not within the main focus of this WS

What we did

1.  Lectures, readings and exercises to get familiar with the theme (reflected in a learning diary).

2.  Group work to develop a design concept(s) with a pitching session in the end (presented with a 10 min AV presentation per team).

3.  Document and report our findings to others (In the blog and in a manual).

What we learned

•  Identify some of the challenges and possibilities of working and designing together with a third sector organization (vs a commercial organization or public sector) addressing a complex situation

•  Define, develop and evaluate a “conceptual design” proposal for a digital service that can be used strategically by the organization to develop and improve its service portfolio.

•  Some concrete tools and vocabulary that can be used in service design as it intertwines with digital media design and development.

Exercises & Feedback -  Customer journey

- Mapping user experience - Blueprints

-  Concept minimum expression

Peer Picnics Offer basic support to self-organize peer suport via

ad-hoc or regular face to face meetings in public spaces. In this live peer meetings, people can gather just as friends do. There could be for instance five locations, where the picnic happens regularly, eg. once per week. The meetings can be advertised as Peer Picnics (via Facebook?). Meeting places can be turned in to ”codes” like strawberry for Koff puisto or mustikka for Kaivopuisto. NL can offer basic guidelines for ”how to be” drawn from the experience they already have with the more formal groups.

Safety Deposit

Offer safe space for women to store important documents, evidence, thoughts or any other things they might have difficulties keeping safe (for e.g at home).

Examples of ideas we did not develop much

Music is one of the most empowering things there is. Even simple, dicreate things like a well crafted playlist can offer women support and motivation in difficult times. Different play lists can be created with contributions from all (volunteers, survivors, staff, etc) who can suggest or add their favourite pieces to NL web site. The different play lists can be created in social media services like Spotify and shared widely.

How it was for us?

•  Happy to be able to do this workshop! •  Surprised that no men came to the course •  Emotional and difficult topic that brought a lot of

synergy within participants and the organization. •  Fun •  Interesting enough to think that we want to work more

with this topic in the future as part of our research.

How was it for you?

We will hear about this after the presentations.
