InvitationDear Colleagues,

Greetings from New Delhi!

On behalf of the Organising Committee, it is our great pleasure to invite you to the ITA-AITES World Tunnel Congress & 34th ITA General Assembly in Agra, India from 19-25 September, 2008. The Tunnelling Association of India (TAI) and the Organizing Committee of ITA WTC 2008 have prepared various programmes under the theme of Underground Facilities for Better Environment & Safety. The Congress is of interest to individuals, Regulatory Bodies, Government Departments, Public Undertakings, Tunnel Building Contractors and Consultants, Equipment Manufacturers, Technical Research Institutes, Universities and Funding Agencies etc., who are actively involved in the tunnel and other underground construction. I request their participation in various events planned in conjunction with the WTC 2008. The Congress will provide an open forum for exchanging new information and ideas related to tunnel and underground space-utilization and is being jointly organized by the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA-AITES), Tunnelling Association of India (TAI) and and Central Board of Irrigation & Power (CBIP).

I also extend a cordial invitation to all the National Committees and Working Group members of ITA to the 34th General Assembly being organised concurrently.

All the agencies involved in tunnel construction including planners, designers, construction firms, consultants and equipment manufacturers are also cordially invited to participate in the exhibition being organized in conjunction with the World Tunnel Congress at Agra. In view of the large scale tunnelling works to be undertaken for Metro rail, Roads and the development of Water Resources/Hydropower Projects in the near future and other underground structures being planned in this country, there is vast scope for agencies within as well as outside the country, to demonstrate their capability either in providing services or equipment by taking part in the Tunnel Exposition 2008..

Agra

The city of Agra, the quintessence of the grand Mughal era, reigns to this day in the public mind as the embodiment of royal grace, imposing architecture and power. Agra is globally renowned as the city of the Taj Mahal. But this royal Mughal city has, in addition to the legendary Taj, many monuments that epitomize the high point of Mughal architecture. No tour to India can be complete without paying a visit to this erstwhile capital of the Mughals and the city of the Taj Mahal, the world’s most beloved monument. With its laidback lifestyle and its immense wealth of architecture, handicrafts and jewellery, Agra is amongst the most remarkable cities of the world.

Agra, the city of Taj Mahal, a poem in white marble was built in the 16th century by Emperor Shahjahan as a monument of love. Agra was once the capital of the Mughals and the relics of their glory are scattered all over the city, from the Taj Mahal to the massive Agra Fort, the delicately carved Itmad-ud-Daulah’s tomb to Akbar’s deserted majestic capital Fatehpur Sikri. Agra is India’s best-known destination for tourists.

How to reach AgraNew Delhi (Indira Gandhi International Airport) is the nearest international Airport for

Agra. Flights arrive generally in New Delhi late evening or early morning.

Distance to Agra: Approx 200 km / 4 hrs drive

On arrival at New Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport: Cox & Kings (I) Ltd. shall welcome the delegates at the airport and arrange their transfer to Agra hotels. On arrival after completing the immigration formalities and collecting your baggage from the belt you will come out from the green channel. After crossing custom there will be a WTC 2008 hospitality desk in between the custom area and arrival hall on 20th & 21st September 2008. The staff at the hospitality desk will assist you for the transport to Agra. There will be a shuttle service from New Delhi to Agra with comfortable seating on payment basis every 2 hours on 20th & 21st September 2008. Delegates arriving on other dates (provided their intimation is received in advance) shall also be received in the arrival hall of IGI International airport and will be facilitated for the journey to Agra.

Package Cost: By Air Conditioned Car : US$ 165 By Air Conditioned Coach : US$ 55 per person

Similar arrangement shall be made to pick up delegates from their respective hotels after the end of WTC 2008 and bring them back to the airport at New Delhi.

For those participants who may like to go by train (Shatabdi Express), which departs New Delhi early morning at 06:15 hrs and reaches Agra at 08:05 hrs. (Breakfast on Board). Please contact M/s. Cox & Kings (I) Limited for reservations. Train tickets will be arranged by M/s. Cox & Kings (I) Ltd. on receipt of the information as given in the Hotel Accommodation and Tour Request Form.

Package Cost: US$ 55 which includes transfer from New Delhi Airport to Railway Station and from Agra Cantt. Railway station to the hotel of stay. Train fare is subject to change. In case of any major fuel hike there will be a change in cost which shall be advised in advance.

Similar facility shall be available for return journey to New Delhi too.

Abstracts are welcome on the topics listed below. Please ensure that your abstract is submitted before February 15, 2008. The ITA WTC 2008 Exhibition will be held in conjunction with the congress sessions in the poolside lawn, where participants’ daily Tea/Coffee will be served exclusively. The exhibition will provide a scope to present the new technologies, materials and mechanisms including software. Participants will enjoy sufficient time and opportunity to inspect the exhibition, and exhibitors will have an excellent opportunity of accessing a large number of potential buyers/decision makers each day. Built-up stalls in octonorm style complete with basic facilities are available in sizes 3×3 sq mtrs.
