The first movie posters

O At this time, the world had a very high illiteracy

rate, therefore, what better to create movie posters with

images to tell people about their films. ‘animated movies’

as they were called in the 1800s were advertised with

stone lithography, In 1896, M. Auzolle designed the first

poster for a specific film, actually containing scenes from

the program, for Lumiere’s film entitled L’Arroseu Arrose.

O The film was actually also considered the first fiction

film.

Movie posters in the 19th C

O By 1909, many companies were producing movies, although

Thomas Edison criticized them for making a profit from his

invention.

O To compete, movie posters were created, and put in small glass

cases, at circuses and movie theaters.

O Strict censorship standards were established by the General

Film Company, and all member companies were required to

meet these rigid standards. In most cases, the photographs

were rather tame in nature, and usually showed the leading

man and lady.

O An interesting piece of information is that

in the 19th century, The artwork from film

posters influenced the music artists at that

time, which is what lead to the creation of

funky artwork of music albums.

O Toward the end of the 19th central we had

photoshop, and although not as good as

today, poster took a turn for the better and

began to rapidly modernize.

However, they still follow the original

conventions of a film poster such as the

main character/s at the front.
