This picture shows a classic use of venetian blinds as they cast a shadow over the character, this is known as chiaroscuro lighting as it is both light and dark. This also gives an impression of crime as the lines from the blinds look like the bars on a prison cell. This picture shows the use of shadows, it gives the audience an idea of what is about to happen without showing them who is going to do it. The use of shadows is common in the thriller genre as they are classically scary; the fear of shadows stems from being children and is something which never truly leaves us because with a shadow you never know who or what is coming. This picture shows another classic thriller convention. In this picture you can see the silhouette of a man standing at a lamp post, we cannot see the man’s face because of the darkness and also because of his trilby hat. The lighting from the lamp post is non- ambient which is classic of the thriller genre, the lighting is also chiaroscuro and so the audience does not know whether or not the man is good or bad.
