He later experiments with this hole,to then realise that it allows him to pass through objects. The excitementgets the better of him when he traps himself in a safe.

Mise-en-scene:As the film begins, the location andsetting of the film is clear, that the filmwill be located around an office andfurthermore, the audience is informedthat the film will be about an officeworker, as the camera moves towardsthe central character. Moreover, thesetting of the film is further notified bythe audience as the viewer notices the props that relate to the officeenvironment, such as the desks, chairs, computers, cabinets, printer andso on. These props create the sense of a believable world. Then we areintroduced to the main character; the office worker. The audience areinformed of this through his costume, the tie, unbuttoned shirt and scruffylook. This also connotes the type of worker he is. His tired look andimpatient nature also explains his character and his background. Thepositioning of his body connotes, the stillness and stiffness of it displays tothe audience that he is a person who may be fed up with working at thisoffice. The deep sigh at the beginning indicates that he is bored and thenthat entire mood changes after he discovers the black hole. Upon thisdiscovery, we see a different side to the character as before this, his eyeswere tired and dull but then his eyes are widened almost with severeinterest. In a later scene, he starts to experiment with the black hole, asthis occurs the lighting of the film brightens up, this is done to give theaudience something to pay attention to. It is something that is eyecatching and makes the viewer want to watch further with interest.

Cinematography:In this film, the director has used a variety of shots, all to indicate everydifferent aspect and event that occurs in the film. At the start, a mediumshot is used to reveal who the characters is,

later another mid shot occursafter the black hole had been printed, to signify the magic behind theblack hole and the excitement and interest displayed in the character. Themedium shot that shows his body posture and look also is used to quickly

display the characters personality. The close up shot of the character stealing a chocolate bar shows that the character believes he had gained a lot of power upon the discovery of this paper. There is another close upshot of his face as he eats the chocolate bar, the joyous facial expression shown is contrasted with the dull facial expression he had at the beginning, which illustrates his childish nature. As he looks around for something else to experiment on, he becomes fascinated by a different office door, to which the camera zooms into to show his interest. This then shows what the nature of his plan would be, that he may do something more cunning and less childish. His cunning nature is shown as he walks through the door, having unlocked it using the black hole, which is an advantage for him.

Sound: There is not much non-diegetic sound in the film. However, the diegetic sound, such as the printing of the black hole, isquite loud and plosive. This is illustrating to the audience that the film iscentred around an office and an office worker. The sound of the paper sucking the cup that the office worker puts on, makes almost a magnetic sound, this suggests that the black hole is something that hold power. The fact that the office worker is able to use the black hole to retrieve items through objects enlightens the worker. As he walks through to the vending machine and decides to grab hold of a chocolate bar, in the process, there is a sound of a wrapper being touched. This is heard so that the audience realise the nature behind this act. The magnetic sound gets louder and thorough as he continues to experiment with the hole. The loudest sound is heard when he walks towards the safe and grabs hold of money. The director has done this purposely to show the audience that it is building towards a finish and the ending will be unexpected.

Editing: As the film begins, we see that the film emerges out of a black hole, this is a transition shot, which instantly sends the viewer a message of what thefilm would be about. There is a shot-reverse-shot used in the editing of thefilm, when he plans to enter the office door and go into the safe. This isused to convey to the audience what the character’s next plan would be. The common continuity editing techniques used are the transition shot of the black hole, the pan movement as the film begins, which the audiencediscovers is an office, and the zooming movement which is used toemphasise the important parts of the film. The main zooming techniqueused at the

end of the last scene is used to send a message to theaudience. That a person should not be too overwhelmed with discovery because it can lead to the wrong places. Also this zooming technique isused to show the end of the climax of the film and therefore leaves theviewer to be more interested in what would have happened to the officeworker, if the film were longer.rint this document
