Thesis: Technology and media are dramatically affecting the lives of children, families and especially teenagers, in a negative manner.

90% of 13-‐17 year olds have used some form of social media and 75% have a profile on a
social networking site.

There is a widespread belief that media and technology hurt a child’s attention span. Some 42 percent of Americans agree that in 2020, young technology users will be easily distracted, lack deep thinking skills, and thirst only for instant gratification. Teachers believe that media and technology has severely hurt students’ attention span.

A Pew Internet survey of nearly 2,500 teachers finds that 87% believe new technologies are creating an “easily distracted generation with short attention spans” and 64% say today’s digital technologies “do more to distract students than to help them academically.”

For teenagers it is creating a lack
of focus, procrastination, a wandering brain, smart
phone addiction and multi screen
habits.
But media is actually having a stronger affect on
adolescents than young children.

A national survey reported teenagers spend, on average, 8.08 hours a day using various forms of media, not including time spent doing school work or talking or texting on a cell
phone.

Studies show that 63% of teenagers log on to Facebook daily, and 40% log on multiple times each day.

Social media websites such as Facebook give rise to
cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is an enormous concern,
especially for adolescents. An organization that aims for
internet safety, called Enough is Enough, conducted a survey that found 95% of teenagers who use social media have witnessed cyberbullying, and
33% have been victims themselves.
Picture -‐ Kale -‐ https://www.f lickr.com/photos/37686267@N02/3878670185/in/photolist-‐6UKcvT-‐2Qdep-‐89B4mx-‐64ZFtS-‐bf33R4-‐dceP3m-‐BwpuQ1-‐wPNEk9-‐fNkU6x-‐w71UfS-‐yjk6jM-‐KTP9MW-‐Kr5gzm-‐sVekii-‐sQ4bW3-‐51FeRQ-‐9LFhuF-‐73c6FD-‐oSqZDX-‐6LnXTC-‐aWXJJ-‐bTpYxc-‐kyx4yw-‐89ACpM-‐81cFCr-‐8nRRXY-‐oTjkEj-‐6Jpa3k-‐dueo54-‐4Y4jeE-‐7Dzbck-‐5SW2vk-‐oV5Bqi-‐mVWM2R-‐7DyoD8-‐GGqqg3-‐oTjdcy-‐oVmbgn-‐oCRuEW-‐buUhrs-‐7DCcwU-‐oTjs7C-‐51EHFo-‐oCSa8e-‐nQy8d6-‐oV5wwv-‐ew8oPi-‐84Kr2Q-‐92GFQH-‐aLEwLa
As well as cyberbullying social media also glamorizes drug and alcohol use. A study that explored the relationship between teenagers, social media, and drug use found that 70% of teenagers ages 12 to 17 use social media, and that those who interact with it on a daily basis are five times more likely to use tobacco, three times more likely to use alcohol, and twice as likely to use marijuana. In addition, 40% admitted they had been exposed to pictures of people under the influence via social media.

Furthermore one quarter of teens who are on social media for more than two hours a day, report poor self-‐rated mental health, psychological distress,
suicidal ideation or unmet need for mental health
support.

So if you take roughly 1.2 billion Facebook and other social media users and 450 million people suffering from mental
disorders, what do you get? A global pandemic that’s
showing no sign of slowing down anytime soon.

12 percent of children who spend no time on social networking websites have
symptoms of mental ill-‐health, the figure rises to 27 percent for those who are glued to the sites for three hours or more a day, a report from the Office for National Statistics showed.

This short anecdote describes just how crazy social media is becoming for adolescents, “I made a conscious decision to avoid Snapchat and Instagram because of the social pressure I saw them putting on my 14-‐year-‐old little sister. If my mum turned off the WiFi at 11pm, my sister would beg me to turn my phone into a hotspot. She always needed to load her Snapchat stories one more time, or to reply to a message that had come in two minutes ago because she didn’t want her friend to feel ignored. If I refused, saying she could respond in the morning, I’d get the “You’re ruining my social life” speech. Even as a teenager as well, I sometimes find this craze a little baffling.”

"Parents need to be more aware of the pitfalls of social networking sites
and actively engage with young people in making it a safer and enjoyable experience for them. “

And that’s just the problem. Parents think they’re communicating with their children when in reality they’re not.
“Everybody says they’re communicating more with their kids by text. That’s the paradox of this. We’re
communicating more but we’re not communicating deeply. That’s the disconnect.”
Social media is a continuous vicious cycle that we are all playing a part
in.

In order to help the problem, parents need to learn the problem, “It’s like Darwin,” she said. “We’ve had to adapt or die because that’s the only way you can communicate with them.”
