    The Philippines: Home to >100 Ethnic Groups

    The Filipino language is the countrysnational language.

    There are various ramifications of Filipinousage in the different parts of the country.

    While DepEd in the K to 12 Program has

    identified 12 major languages in our country,Filipino stands out as the unifying language.

    PROS Filipino language unites

    Filipinos here and abroad.The nuances of the

    language works well for theFilipinos:

    - Endearment qualities

    - Expressions of love,

    anger, piety, love of Godand country

    - Sense of nationalism

    and patriotism

    - Close family ties

    CONS Filipino as a language

    needs to be fully developedto encompass all areas of

    concern and all disciplinesof study

    A sizeable number ofFilipinos can communicate

    orally but cant write inFilipino

    It will take time before allFilipinos will appreciate theuse of Filipino especially as

    medium of instruction

    The number of Filipinosoutside the Philippinescontinues to increase.

    If migrant Filipinoscontinue to be minority,they will in the long run,

    adopt the language oftheir country of residence.

    The number of Filipinospeakers around the world

    is increasing,approximately 17 million.This is impressive for asmall country.

    By world standards, thisis still small.

    More foreign schools offerFilipino as a language inmany universities and high

    schools especially in Asiaand in America.

    Again, volume-wise, it islimited. As to extent andcoverage limited, too.

    Filipino is the language ofsoap operas and news;

    also products that useFilipino boast of a largeconsumer base.

    This phenomenon isobserved only by Filipinos.

    Still, the statistics willbelittle such a claim.

    PROS CONS

    Scholarship and economicinterest in the Philippines is

    growing.

    Yes indeed but confined toU.S cities, predominantly.

    Meeting will also tackle possible research

    thrusts.
