Viviparous (Common) Lizard 8.323 Within the MBW there are 53 individual records from 27 separate sites (Figure 8.154) for this

NERC Act and WCA priority species. Considering contemporary records only, the species was recorded on 29 occasions from 13 sites. The available records show 12 recently recorded site (post-1988) and 14 sites no longer support individuals of this species. Overall, the range of this species has decreased from 15 to 13 sites within the MBW. The total numbers of records has, however, increased slightly from 24 to 29 between the two time periods. Nonetheless, without consideration of the actual abundance, no real comment can be made as regards the conservation status of the species within MBW as no assessment can be made of population trends.

8.324 Considering the coverage of this species by protected areas, 22.6% (12) of records fall within SBI (Caldy Hill, Leasowe Common, Royal Liverpool Golf Course and Wallasey Golf Course and Leasowe Gun Site), 35.8% (19) record within SSSI (Dee Estuary, Heswall Dales, North Wirral Foreshore, Red Rocks and Thurstaston Common), 35.8% (19) within all statutory sites (as for SSSI with Thurstaston Common LNR and the Dee Estuary Ramsar, SPA and SAC) and 56.6% (30) within all statutory and SBI collectively. Taking account of only those records considered contemporary (i.e. post-1988), 37.9% (11) fall within the bounds of SBI (Caldy Hill, Leasowe Common, Royal Liverpool Golf Course and Wallasey Golf Course and Leasowe Gun Site), 48.3% (14) within SSSI (Dee Estuary, Heswall Dales, North Wirral Foreshore, Red Rocks and Thurstaston Common), 48.3% (14) within all statutory (as for SSSI with Thurstaston Common LNR and the Dee Estuary Ramsar, SPA and SAC), and 82.8% (24) within all statutory and SBI collectively.

Spiders 8.325 Two NERC Act spiders have been recorded on at least on occasion within the MBW: Peus’s

long-back spider and sand running spider.

Peus’s Long-Back Spider 8.326 Within the MBW there are ten individual records from five separate sites (Figure 8.155) for this

NERC Act and UK BAP priority species. Considering contemporary records only, the species was recorded on six occasions from five sites. The available records show two recently recorded site (post-1988). Overall, the range of this species has increased from three to five sites within the MBW. Nonetheless, without consideration of the actual abundance, no real comment can be made as regards the conservation status of the species within MBW as no assessment can be made of population trends.

8.327 Considering the coverage of this species by protected areas, 20.0% (two) of records fall within SBI (Leasowe Common and Wallasey Golf Course and Leasowe Gun Site). Taking account of only those records considered contemporary (i.e. post-1988), 33.3% (two) fall within the bounds of SBI (Leasowe Common and Wallasey Golf Course and Leasowe Gun Site).

Sand Running Spider 8.328 Within the MBW there are two historical records from two sites (Figure 8.156) for this NERC Act

and UK BAP priority species, both of which date from 1906. Given that this species has not been recorded within the MBW for more than 100 years, coupled with the low number of records, it is likely that this species no longer occurs within the MBW.

8.329 Considering the coverage of this species by protected areas, the single historical record does not fall within the boundaries of any statutory protected area or SBI.

Terrestrial Mammals 8.330 Ten NERC Act priority terrestrial mammal species have been recorded within the MBW: brown

hare, brown long-eared bat, harvest mouse, hedgehog, noctule, otter, pipistrelle, polecat, red squirrel and water vole.

Brown Hare 8.331 Formerly considered abundant, the brown hare appears to have undergone a substantial

decline in numbers since the early 1960s, with population estimates now varying between 817,500 and 1,250,000. Within the MBW, there are 379 individual records spread across 87 sites (Figure 8.157) for this NERC Act, UK BAP and Local (Wirral) BAP priority species. Considering contemporary records only, this species was recorded on 99 separate occasions on 50 separate sites. The available records show 22 recently recorded site (post-1988) and 37 sites no longer report presence. Overall, the range of this species has decreased from 65 to 50 sites within the MBW. In addition, the total numbers of records has declined markedly from 280 to 99 between the two time periods. Nonetheless, without consideration of the actual abundance, no real comment can be made as regards the conservation status of the species within MBW as no assessment can be made of population trends.

8.332 Considering the coverage of this species by protected areas, 6.1% (23) of records occur within SBI (Caldy Golf Course, Former FAR Camp-West Kirby, Leasowe Common, Raby Mere and The Dungeon), 26.4% (100) within SSSI (Dee Estuary, Dibbinsdale and The Dungeon), 26.4% (100) within all statutory sites (as for SSSI with Brotherton Park and Dibbinsdale LNR and the Dee Estuary Ramsar, SPA and SAC), and 31.1% (118) within all of the above together. Taking account of only those records considered contemporary (i.e. post-1988), 11.1% (11) fall within the boundaries of SBI (Caldy Golf Course, Former RAF Camp-West Kirby and The Dungeon),

Brown Long-Eared Bat 8.333 Within the MBW, there are 50 individual records spread across 23 sites (Figure 8.158) for this

NERC Act, WCA, UK BAP and Local (Wirral) BAP priority species. Considering contemporary records only, this species was recorded on 16 separate occasions on 13 separate sites (there is one additional un-dated record). The available records show seven recently recorded sites (post-1988) and ten sites no longer report presence. Overall, the range of this species has decreased from 16 to 13 sites within the MBW. In addition, the total numbers of records has declined from 34 to 16 between the two time periods. Nonetheless, without consideration of the actual abundance, no real comment can be made as regards the conservation status of the species within MBW as no assessment can be made of population trends.

8.334 Considering the coverage of this species by protected areas, 46.0% (23) of records occur within SSSI (Dee Estuary and Heswall Dales) and 6.0% (three) within all statutory sites (as for SSSI with Heswall Dales LNR and the Dee Estuary Ramsar, SPA and SAC). Taking account of only those records considered contemporary (i.e. post-1988), 68.8% (11) fall within the boundaries of SSSI (Dee Estuary Heswall Dales) and 50.0% (eight) within all statutory (as for SSSI with Heswall Dales LNR and the Dee Estuary Ramsar, SPA and SAC).

Harvest Mouse 8.335 Within the MBW, there are 18 individual records spread across nine sites (Figure 8.159) for this

NERC Act, Red Data Book, UK BAP and Local (Wirral) BAP priority species. Considering contemporary records only, this species was recorded on seven separate occasions on four separate sites. The available records show four recently recorded sites (post-1988) and five sites no longer report presence. Overall, the range of this species has decreased from five to four sites within the MBW. In addition, the total numbers of records has declined from 11 to seven between the two time periods. Nonetheless, without consideration of the actual abundance, no real comment can be made as regards the conservation status of the species within MBW as no assessment can be made of population trends.

8.336 Considering the coverage of this species by protected areas, 11.1% (two) of records occur within the Dibbinsdale SSSI Taking account of only those records considered contemporary (i.e. post-1988), 28.6% (two) records fall within the boundary of the Dibbinsdale SSSI.

Hedgehog 8.337 Within the MBW, there are 237 individual records spread across 72 sites (Figure 8.160) for this

NERC Act and UK BAP priority species. Considering contemporary records only, this species was recorded on 20 separate occasions on 13 separate sites. The available records show six recently recorded sites (post-1988) and 59 sites no longer report presence. Overall, the range of this species has decreased from 66 to 13 sites within the MBW. In addition, the total numbers of records has declined drastically from 217 to 20 between the two time periods. Nonetheless, without consideration of the actual abundance, no real comment can be made as regards the conservation status of the species within MBW as no assessment can be made of population trends. It should be noted that this species appears to be greatly under reported from urban gardens and local knowledge suggests that many records have not been incorporated into the rECOrd dataset.

8.338 Considering the coverage of this species by protected areas, 1.7% (four) of records occur within SBI (Raby Mere), 15.6 (37) within SSSI (Dee Estuary, Dibbinsdale, Heswall Dales and North Wirral Foreshore), 15.6% (37) within all statutory sites (as for SSSI with Brotherton Park and Dibbinsdale and Heswall Dales LNRs and the Dee Estuary Ramsar, SPA and SAC), and 17.3% (41) within all statutory and SBI collectively. Taking account of only those records considered contemporary (i.e. post-1988), 55.0% (11) fall within the boundaries of SSSI (Dee Estuary Heswall Dales), and 40.0% (eight) within all statutory (as for SSSI with Heswall Dales and North Wirral Foreshore LNRs and the Dee Estuary SAC).

Noctule 8.339 Within the MBW, there are 110 individual records spread across 45 sites (Figure 8.161) for this

NERC Act, WCA, UK BAP and Local (Wirral) BAP priority species. Considering contemporary records only, this species was recorded on 30 separate occasions on 17 separate sites (there is one additional un-dated record). The available records show ten recently recorded sites (post-1988) and 28 sites no longer report presence. Overall, the range of this species has decreased from 35 to 17 sites within the MBW. In addition, the total numbers of records has declined from 80 to 30 between the two time periods. Nonetheless, without consideration of the actual abundance, no real comment can be made as regards the conservation status of the species within MBW as no assessment can be made of population trends.

8.340 Considering the coverage of this species by protected areas, 16.4% (18) of records occur within SBI (Bidston Marsh, Grange Hill, Overchurch Park Wood, Raby Mere and Royal Liverpool Golf Course), 8.2% (nine) within SSSI (Dee Cliffs, Dee Estuary and Heswall Dales), 9.1% (ten) within all statutory sites (as for SSSI with Heswall Dales LNR and the Dee Estuary Ramsar, SPA and SAC), and 24.5% (27) within all statutory and SBI collectively. Taking account of only those records considered contemporary (i.e. post-1988), 16.7% (five) fall within the boundaries of SBI (Bidston Marsh and Grange Hill), one record within SSSI (Heswall Dales) and 6.7% (two) within all statutory (as for SSSI with Bidston Moss and Heswall Dales LNRs), and 20.0% (six) within all statutory and SBI collectively.

Otter 8.341 This once common and widespread species is listed on the RDB by virtue of a rapid decline in

population size from the 1950s to 1970s. Within the MBW, there are 21 individual records spread across 14 sites (Figure 8.162) for this NERC Act, CRoW Act, WCA, UK BAP and Local (Wirral) BAP priority species. Considering contemporary records only, this species was recorded on five separate occasions on five separate sites. The available records show five recently (post-1988) recorded sites and nine sites no longer report the species as present post-1988. Overall, this species has contracted its range within the MBW from nine sites pre-1988 to five sites post-1988. Nonetheless, without consideration of the actual abundance, no real comment can be made as regards the conservation status of the species within MBW as no assessment can be made of population trends.

8.342 Considering the coverage of this species by protected areas, one record occurs within SBI (Plymyard Dale), 12.3% (three) within SSSI (The Dee Estuary, North Wirral Foreshore), 12.3% (three) within all statutory sites (as for SSSI with The Dee Estuary Ramsar, SAC, SPA), and 19.0% (four) within all of the above together. Taking account of only those records considered contemporary (i.e. post-1988), one record falls within the boundaries of SBI (Plymyard Dale), 40.0% (two) within SSSI (The Dee Estuary), 40.0% (two) within all statutory (as for SSSI with The Dee Estuary Ramsar, SAC, SPA), and 80.0% (four) within all statutory and SBI collectively.

Pipistrelle 8.343 Although it remains the most abundant and widespread bat species in the UK, the pipistrelle is

thought to have undergone a significant decline in numbers this century. Estimates from the National Bat Colony Survey suggest a population decline of approximately 70% between 1978 and 1993. The problems of estimating population trends have been compounded by the recent discovery that there may be two distinct species of pipistrelle bat in the UK. Within the MBW, there are 283 individual records spread across 81 sites (Figure 8.163) for this NERC Act, CRoW Act, WCA, UK BAP and Local (Wirral) BAP priority species. Considering contemporary records only, this species was recorded on 94 separate occasions on 50 separate sites. The available records show 31 recently recorded sites (post-1988) 22 sites are no longer recorded. Overall, this species has contracted its range within the MBW from 59 to 50 sites. In addition, the total numbers of records has decreased from 189 to 94 between the two time periods. Nonetheless, without consideration of the actual abundance, no real comment can be made as regards the conservation status of the species within MBW as no assessment can be made of population trends. It should be noted that this species has been sub-divided into two species (P. pipistrellus and P. pygmaeus). However, the greater majority of records have not been divided in this way. These analyses can, therefore, deal only with both species together.

8.344 Considering the coverage of this species by protected areas, 11.7% (33) of records occur within SBI (Arrowe Park, Bidston Marsh, Overchurch Park Wood, Raby Mere) 6.4% (18) within SSSI (Dee Estuary, Dibbinsdale, Heswall Dales), 7.1% (20) within all statutory sites (as for SSSI with Bidston Moss LNR, Brotherton Park and Dibbinsdale LNR, Heswall Dale LNR, Hilbre Islands LNR, The Dee Estuary Ramsar, SAC, SPA), and 18.0% (51) within all of the above together. Taking account of only those records considered contemporary (i.e. post-1988), 10.6% (ten) fall within the boundaries of SBI (Arrowe Park, Bidston Marsh, Overchurch Park Wood, Raby

Polecat 8.345 Within the MBW there are three contemporary records from two sites (Figure 8.164) for this

NERC Act, UK BAP and Local (Wirral) BAP priority species, all of which date from 1996. Given the low numbers of records and sites, fieldwork to ascertain current status is recommended.

8.346 Considering the coverage of this species by protected areas, the two recording sites do not fall within the boundaries of any statutory protected area or SBI.

Red Squirrel 8.347 Within the MBW, there are 152 individual records spread across 39 sites (Figure 8.165) for this

NERC Act, CRoW Act, WCA, Red Data Book and UK BAP priority species. Considering contemporary records only, this species was recorded on just three occasions on two separate sites. The available records show that 37 sites are no longer recorded. Overall, this species has contracted its range within the MBW from 39 to just two sites. In addition, the total numbers of records has decreased from 149 to three between the two time periods. The dramatic decline in sites and records suggests that this species has declined substantially within the MBW. Nonetheless, without consideration of the actual abundance, no real comment can be made as regards the conservation status of the species within MBW as no assessment can be made of population trends. It should be noted that all records considered contemporary require validation for this species.

8.348 Considering the coverage of this species by protected areas, 3.9% (six) of records occur within SBI (Raby Mere and Royden Park) 35.5% (54) within SSSI (Dee Estuary, Dibbinsdale, Heswall Dales and North Wirral Foreshore), 35.5% (54) within all statutory sites (as for SSSI with Brotherton Park and Dibbinsdale and Heswall Dales LNRs and the Dee Estuary Ramsar, SAC, SPA), and 39.5% (60) within all of the above together. Taking account of only those records considered contemporary (i.e. post-1988), one record falls within the boundaries of statutory protected areas (Dibbinsdale SSSI and Brotherton Park and Dibbinsdale LNR).

Water Vole 8.349 This once common and widespread species is listed on the NERC Act, CRoW Act, WCA, UK

BAP and Local (Wirral) BAP by virtue of a sustained decline in population size. Within the MBW, there are 212 individual records spread across 66 sites (Figure 8.166). Considering contemporary records only, this species was recorded on 12 separate occasions on 11 separate sites. The available records show eight newly recorded sites (post-1988) and 54 previously recorded sites are no longer included. Thus, overall this species has greatly contracted its range from 58 sites pre-1988 to 11 sites post-1988. In addition, the total numbers of records has declined dramatically from 200 pre-1988 to just 12 post-1988.

8.350 Considering the coverage of this species by protected areas, 10.4% (22) of records occur within SBI (Arrowe Park, Bidston Marsh, Leasowe Common, Raby Mere and Royden Park), 29.7% (63) within SSSI (Dee Estuary, Dibbinsdale and North Wirral Foreshore), 29.7% (63) within all statutory sites (as for SSSI with Brotherton Park and Dibbinsdale and Hilbre Islands LNR and the Dee Estuary Ramsar, SAC, SPA), and 40.1% (85) within all of the above together. Taking account of only those records considered contemporary (i.e. post-1988), 16.7% (two) fall within the boundaries of SBI (Raby Mere and Royden Park), one within SSSI (Dibbinsdale), one within all statutory (as for SSSI with Brotherton Park and Dibbinsdale LNR), and 25.0% (three) within all of the above collectively.

Palmate Newt 8.387 Within the MBW there are three historical records from two sites (Figure 8.184) for this WCA

priority species, the most recent of which dates from 1979 (there is also an additional undated record for a third site). Given that this species has not been recorded within the MBW for more than # years, coupled with the low number of records, it is likely that this species no longer occurs within the MBW.

8.388 Considering the coverage of this species by protected areas, none of the historical records fall within the boundaries of any statutory protected area or SBI.

Smooth Newt 8.389 Within the MBW, there are 141 individual records spread across 60 sites (Figure 8.185) for this

WCA priority species. Considering contemporary records only, this species was recorded on 34 separate occasions on 17 sites. The available records show 14 newly recorded sites (post-1988) and 43 previously recorded sites are no longer included. Thus, overall this species has decreased its range from 46 sites pre-1988 to 17 sites post-1988. In addition, the total numbers of records has declined drastically from 107 pre-1988 to 34 in more recent years.

8.390 Considering the coverage of this species by protected areas, % (20) of records occur within SBI (Arrowe Park, Backford Road Park, Bidston Marsh, Caldy Golf Course, Manor Wood, Murrayfield Hospital, New Ferry Butterfly Park, Prenton Dell and Clay Pit, Quarry Road East: Heswall, Raby Ponds, Royal Liverpool Golf Course, Royden Park, Stanley Wood and Wirral Way: Caldy-Thurston-Heswall), 83.3% (ten) within SSSI (Dee Cliffs, Dee Estuary and Thurstaston Common), 83.3% (ten) within all statutory (as for SSSI with Thurstaston Common LNR and the Dee Estuary Ramsar, SPA and SAC ), and 100% (30) considering all statutory and SBI collectively. Taking account of only those records considered contemporary (i.e. post-1988), 75.0% (nine) of records fall within the boundaries of SBI (Arrowe Park, Backford Road Park, New Ferry Butterfly Park and Quarry Road East: Heswall), one within SSSI (Dee Cliffs), and 29.4% (ten) within all statutory and SBI collectively.

Birds

Barn Owl 8.391 Within the MBW, there are 49 individual records spread across 26 sites (Figure 8.186) for this

WCA and Local (Wirral) BAP priority species. Considering contemporary records only, this species was recorded on 44 separate occasions on 23 separate sites. The available records show 22 recent (post-1988) recording sites and three previously recorded sites are no longer included post-1988. Thus, overall, this species appears to have expanded its range within the MBW from four sites pre-1988 to 26 sites post-1988. In addition, the total number of records has also increased between the two time periods from five pre-1988 to 44 post-1988. These new sites are widely spread out across the MBW as compared to a northern concentration pre-1988 (Figure 8.). Nonetheless, without consideration of the actual abundance, no real comment can be made as regards the conservation status of the species within MBW as no assessment can be made of population trends. It should be noted that, from local knowledge, various known records have not been included within the rECOrd database.

8.392 Considering the coverage of this species by protected areas, 6.1% (three) of records occur within SBI (Arrowe Park, Bidston Marsh, Wallasey Golf Course and Leasowe gun site), one within SSSI (North Wirral Foreshore), one within all statutory sites (as for SSSI with Bidston Moss LNR, The Dee Estuary SAC), and 26.5% (13) within all of the above together. Taking account of only those records considered contemporary (i.e. post-1988), 4.5% (two) fall within the boundaries of SBI (Arrowe Park, Wallasey Golf Course and Leasowe gun site), one within SSSI (North Wirral Foreshore), and one within all statutory (as for SSSI with The Dee Estuary SAC).
