Introduction

WHAT is a Frill-necked lizard ?

The frill-necked lizard also known as the frilled lizard or frilled dragon, is found mainly in northern Australia and southern New Guinea. Its name comes from the large frill around its neck, which usually stays folded against the lizard's body. It is largely arboreal, spending the majority of the time in the trees. The lizard's diet consists mainly of insects and small vertebrates. The frill-necked lizard is a relatively large lizard, averaging 85 cm in length.

Arboreal-Living in trees

Physics- How is the Lizard able to run so fast ?

The frill neck lizard is special in running cause when it feels threatened , it will run away on it’s hind legs (back legs)really fast . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAo09yYOpCU

- How is it able to camouflage itself so well ?

They have a sand-like colour skin which camouflages well in the surroundings.

Biology

How is the lizard born ?

-Female frilled-neck lizards test dozens of nesting sites, digging holes and probing with their snouts for temperature conditions that are just right.(Do you know that the temperature that the eggs are covered determines the sex of the Lizard?)

-How the lizard is able to survive in the hot?

They spent most of their time up on tree so the weather does not really affect them .

-Habitat of the frill-necked lizard

They live in hot tropical climates, so are found all over the northern part of Australia. They like to bathe themselves in the sun like other reptiles.

ChemistryThe frill-necked lizard is

ectothermic and maintains its homeostatic body temperature by basking for up to 30 minutes. This achieves an average of 2–3 degrees Celsius above the surrounding temperature.

Ectothermic- a cold blooded animal

Page 7: The frill neck lizard

Value aspects The frill-necked lizard is:

• Intelligent: as when it feels threatened,

it will open its frills to scare off its predator

Fast: as when in danger,it will

run away on two legs at a fast pace

National Education Aspects

4) In times of conflict and war, to whom can we turn?

a)What are some defense mechanisms the animal has to protect itself?

The frill. It is a piece of skin that wraps around the neck and attaches to the jaw. Because of its attachment to the jaw, when the frilled neck opens its mouth to hiss or make noise at a predator or to ward off competition during mating, the frill will spread open along with the jaw. The jaw also helps the frilled neck to eat.

5) How can we ensure Singapore’s economic competitiveness?

How has the animal evolved or adapted itself to survive?

-the frill necked lizard will decrease its activity level to the lack of food and water during the dry season but it increases its activity greatly and takes advantage of the abundance of food during the wet season and because they are properly nourished, the frilled neck uses the rainy season as their mating season.

-Because they spend most of their day perched in the trees, the frilled neck has developed a highly effective camouflage. Their camouflage is a very effective defense against predators. The frilled necks also have scales which helps prevent water loss.
