PAGE 3 Quinto Domingo de Cuaresma SAVED BY GOD’S LOVE

Because the people broke the old covenant, God promised a new covenant, not in the blood of oxen and other animals, but in the blood of the Son, Jesus Christ. This new covenant, foreseen from afar by Jeremiah and the prophets, was not to be engraved on stone, or written on paper, but carved on our hearts, so that we might know God intimately. Not by keeping many laws are we to be saved, but by the love of God, living and real in our hearts through the sacrifice of Christ. Our Eucharist is the pledge of that indwelling of Christ, and of our response of praise and thanksgiving to God for the mercy, love, and kindness shown to us in for-giving our sins and cleansing our hearts of everything evil. God issues this invitation to intimacy by offering us the chance to have our sufferings transformed into the perfect love of the Savior, who first loved us. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Question of the Week

First Reading — I will place my law within them and write it upon their hearts. (Jeremiah 31:31-34) or Ezekiel 37:12-14. Psalm — Create a clean heart in me, O God (Psalm 51) or Psalm 130. Second Reading — Christ became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him (Hebrews 5:7-9) or Ro-mans 8:8-11. Gospel — If a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it produces much fruit (John 12:20-33) or John 11:1-45 [3-7, 17, 20-27, 33b-45]. Question for Children: Name one thing you can do or stop doing that will help you have a better friendship with Jesus. Question for Adults: Name one area in your life that you need to let go of, to die to, in order to rise with new life.

WHITE SPECIAL MASS PRAYER ENVELOPE

Over the next two weeks, as we hear of the interior anguish of Jesus, we are led to the Garden of Gethsemane, the scene of a night of suffering, failure, and loss. In Hebrew, the word means “olive press,” and it was an olive grove, although only a few trees remain. Olives can’t be eaten off the trees, they need to be cured—knocked from the trees at harvest time, scooped into a stone basin, and cracked open by a heavy millstone. The crushing stone weight was itself called a “gethsemane,” and once it was lowered onto the olives, oil from the fruit and the inner stone would drip into a groove and flow into jars. The night before his death, Jesus experienced such anguish that scripture says his own blood perspired from him, an image no one who under-stands olive oil production could miss. Today, the Mount of Olives is within the city of Jeru-salem and the site of the Church of All Nations, also known as the Basilica of the Agony. It was built in 1924, funded by Catholics in twelve different countries. An open-air altar on the grounds is used by Anglicans on Holy Thursday every year. Nearby is the Russian Church of Mary Magdalene, built by the czar in 1888, its magnificent golden domes a distinctive landmark. There is also another tiny Catholic Church, called Dominus Flevit, or “The Cry of the Lord,” built in a teardrop shape in the mid-1950s. For centuries, the Franciscan order has had the care of the shrines of the Holy Land, and our Good Friday collection helps sustain these precious sites.

Treasures from our Tradition

Fifth Sunday of Lent

We are now at the fifth Sunday in our Lenten preparation. The focus of the readings turns our attention from the rules we read about during the third week to a new cove-nant, a new relationship between God and all of us. Jeremiah tells us of God’s intention to enter our very hearts, the center of our life. The psalm asks for a “clean heart” so that we are ready to receive the joy of salvation. Hebrews tells us that Jesus too prayed, was made perfect, and became the source of eternal salvation. In John, Jesus explains the contradiction that this new relationship in-volves: death becomes life. God gives everything to us, including forgiveness. God holds back nothing from us, giving us even the beloved Son, Jesus.

REPENTANCE God has promised pardon to one who repents, but has

not promised repentance to one who sins. —St. Anselm

EASTER FLOWERS IN MEMORY OF A LOVED ONE

With Easter only two weeks away, it is time to ask for your lep with the Easter Flower Offering. We are able to decorate our church so beautifully because of your gener-ous donations. If you are able to help us this year, please take one of the envelopes in the pews today, till it out and drop it in the collection basket. You may also bring it in to the parish office during regular business hours. The Easter Flower offering is an opportunity to remember a loved one in a special way during the Easter Season. Donations help defray the cost of decorating our beautiful church throughout the season. Thank you for your generosity.

Candles will not be sold during Holy Week. In the light of images of Christ and Saints, there will be no lighting of candles during Holy Week.

GUIDELINES REGARDING FAST AND ABSTINENCE

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are both days of Fast and Abstinence. All Fridays during Lent we abstain from eating meat (meat includes poultry) How do we fast? We are allowed one full meal during the day. Two smaller meals are permitted. Eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. How do we abstain? We refrain from all meat. Age guidelines for abstinence Abstinence is to be practiced by all who are 14 years of age and older. Age guidelines for fastening Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday and who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday.

Both personally and as a community we deliberately place ourselves in need (hunger being the most basic need) so that we can discover that for which we hunger spiritually in our lives and in our world. We do this to give concrete expression to our trust in God to give us the spiritual sustenance we require. Our joint action is intended to strengthen our deep belief that the God who raised Jesus from the dead also fills our every need.

Safeguard the Children

DID YOU KNOW? You can help children know they are understood As parents, educators and volunteers, we want children to know that we are not only authority fig-ures in their lives, but also people they can trust. To foster authentic trust with children, it is important that they know that you understand them. One of the simplest ways to do this is by repeating back what chil-dren are telling you. When you do this, you are affirming to the child that they are heard and understood. WHY ARE OUR STATUES COVERED UP?

Before the liturgy was revised in 1970, it was the norm to cover crosses and statues the last two weeks of Lent. They were then uncovered as the Gloria was sung at the Easter Vigil. When the liturgy was revised after Vatican II, this custom of covering crosses and statues during the last two weeks of Lent was left up to the Conference of Bishops in each country, the United States bishops did not elect to include it. However, the new 3rd Edition of the Roman Missal now permits the covering of crosses and statues be-ginning the 5th Sunday of Lent. In the Dioceses of the United States, covering crosses and statues may now be observed. That is why you see our cross and statues covered this year!
