Dear Parishioners, As I mentioned last week, the Bible is central in Catholic life, especially in the way we pray and worship. Today, we will see how the Bible is also central in the teachings of the Church.

We believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, written in human language. This is why another name we use in referring to the Bible is Sacred Scripture.

“Written in human language” means that the divine message of the Bible is expressed through the different styles and genres that make up any great work of literature. For example, you will find, within the books of Sacred Scripture, poems, narratives, wisdom, proverbs, history, prophecy, myth-like stories, parables and allegory, all influenced by the culture of the times in which they were composed.

However, because the Bible is divinely inspired, we hold that God is ultimately the author; and though the Bible is written in human language, the revealed truths about God are themselves not compromised. The words of Sacred Scripture are living and active in the world, yesterday, today and tomorrow, and are not subject to culture and history.

All of us can and should read and pray with the Bible at a personal level. However, sometimes it can be hard to understand, because without proper context and interpretation, the words on the page can be easily misunderstood. Some things written in the Bible are meant to be taken literally, other things are not. We trust that the Holy Spirit works within the teaching magisterium of the Church, to interpret the spiritual truths of the Bible and to safeguard against incorrect interpretation, providing us with teachings that are true and authentic when it comes to matters of faith and morals. These teachings are passed down from generation to generation through what we call the Sacred Tradition of the Church. Catholics believe that Sacred Tradition is the servant of the inspired Word of God. The two, Scripture and Tradition, flow together into the one spring of living water that we call Divine Revelation. The two together have served to keep the Catholic Church as one through her 2000-plus year history and in every place and culture throughout the world. The fullness of revelation is Jesus Christ. The teaching of the importance of Scripture and Tradition is unique to the Catholic faith.

Fr. Gary’s article continues on page 3...

...Fr. Gary’s article continued

Again, I invite you to go deeper.

Take time to study the Bible by always reading the introduction of the book you are reading, along with the footnotes. The introduc-tion helps us situate ourselves within the proper context of the text and gives us the genre of the book, letting us know whether we should read the book as history, poetry, allegory etc. This helps us avoid misunderstandings. You can read the Catechism of the Cath-olic Church to learn more about how the Church understands her relationship with Sacred Scripture at www.vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/p1s1c2a3.htm If you want to go the extra mile, you can read the document Dei Verbum www.vatican.va/archive/hist_councils/ii_vatican_council/documents/vat-ii_const_19651118_dei-verbum_en.html, Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation, written by Pope Paul VI. He is risen indeed. Alleluia!

Fr. Gary Zender

Message from Lynette Basta... It is with mixed emotions that I write to you to let you know that in January I had a conversation with Fr. Gary and expressed my de-sire to retire from my position as Director of Worship. My official last day working at St. Louise will be June 30th. It has been an honor and a privilege being a part of the Parish staff for the past nine years and serving along side you. Both Sam and I still plan to call St. Louise parish our church home, as it has been for over 33 years. Blessings, Lynette Basta

Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Saturday mornings beginning May 1, eve-ryone is invited to join in celebrating a no-vena to the Virgin Mary under her title, "Our Lady of Perpetual Help," at 10AM for nine Saturdays, beginning May 1. The no-vena gathering will be in the St. Louise Room. Please note that the novena will not be livestreamed. The dates for the novena are May 1, 15, 22, 29, June 5, 12, 19, 26. "Our Lady of Perpetual Help" is the name given to Mary as depicted in a famous, centuries-old icon in the Byzantine style. The icon and the devotion to Mary it in-spires is in the special charge of the Re-demptorist order of priests. You can see a

picture of the icon and read about its history, miracles and symbolism at their website at http://www.iconoflove.org/. Although anyone can make a private novena at any time, the Church teaches that there is added efficacy in the union of the faithful at prayer. Holding this public novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help is a St. Louise tradition, sponsored by the Fil-Am community. Please come!

¡Aleluya!
