Fr. Terry KeehanHappy Mother’s Day to all of our mothers
and women who play a motherly role in the life of others. I have come to deeply appreciate the statements, "Give birth" and "Give Life." They both fl ow from but are not limited to the physical act of childbirth. The word “give” is a huge part of both state-ments. Obviously, as life begins in the womb, and then when a child separates from mother physi-cally, there are endless possibilities for that new life to give life to others. A gift is given and then gives more. We all know the feeling of energy that comes from a person who gives life to others in ways beyond childbirth. Their energy and enthusiasm are uplifting. They too are giving and enhancing life. Giving birth and giving life are acts where the physical and the spiritual of our one world can come together. Unfortunately, at times, all of us can zap or take life from others for a variety of reasons. We all know how that feels. Not all gifts are appreciated so not all acts of giving are recognized, but where the spiritual and physical giving come together, grace can explode and life as we know it can break open very power-fully. As I so often say, it becomes more. You have probably heard me quote my friend and great theologian, Jack Shea, who says, "In the physical realm, when we give something to someone, we lose it. In the spiritual realm, when we give something to someone, it becomes more." Jesus is the great example of this, and in so many scripture passages he demonstrates this “more” as he gives. The story of Jesus feed-ing 5,000 is the prime example. Shea also says, "When Jesus comes on the scene, there is always more” – more compassion, more hope, more for-giveness, more love – more life. Let's be grateful this weekend, and always, for so many women who give birth and give life, because they have collectively made our world so much more. Let us give thanks for women who give life with their energy, talent, creativity, tender-ness, gentleness, strength, generosity and love – and have made our world so much more by doing so. As I continue to write extensively about work, I am amazed at how prevalent the word is in our culture and in scripture. This week's scripture includes a line from the Gospel that refers to work
and the works of Jesus more than the other, from the Gospel of John. We hear Jesus say, "Whoever believes in me will do the works that I do. (John14:11) It is my very strong contention that we are urged to work like God and that our work really is an extension of God's work. The question is, do we believe that? I am inspired by and blessed by so many life-giving women. They fi ll my journey. They include my three sisters-in-law, Sharon, Mickie and Mieko; my nieces; my great niece; my friends and col-leagues; and so many of you who make Holy Family holy. Your faith, your belief has already enabled you to do the works of God. Your faith in Jesus Christ and your faith in God so often come together in such a seamless way and make you give life. It also happens so often that you are probably unaware that your faith is leading you to do God's work. So many of you give birth. So many of you give life, and from us who are the recipients of that life, thank you for making the world so much more. Thanks for giving life.
Meditations and Guided MeditationSoon I will make some meditations and calming prayer experiences available via Facebook. Many have voiced a need for some calming prayer recently. As I am refl ecting on very busy motherly women in the world, some of you can benefi t from a little calm amidst your hectic life.
Tune in With TerryI am also off ering a series of 20 minute presenta-tions on various topics with 20 minutes of discus-sion to follow, called Tune in With Terry. They will be off ered Tuesday mornings and Thursday evenings. Look for details in our email blasts and on our website.

Sixth Sunday of Easter1. Peter and John laid hands on recently baptized Samaritans so they would receive the Holy Spirit. Have you ever witnessed a laying of hands? What was the result?
2. What role does the Holy Spirit play in your life?
3. In today’s world, why is it so diffi cult to act with “gentleness and reverence” as Peter im-plores us to do? What can we do better?
4. The commandments are usually viewed as a list of “nots.” How can they be viewed instead as a list of “do’s?”
5. Jesus says: “On that day you will realize that I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you.” When do you sense that you are in Him, and He is in you?
SOCIAL JUSTICE QUESTIONThe Holy Spirit plays a pivotal role in our lives. How do you see the Holy Spirit working through you to address a justice issue?
A Prayer for Our Uncertain TimesMay we who are merely inconvenienced remember those whose lives are at stake.
May we who have no risk factors remember those most vulnerable.
May we who have the luxury of working from home remember those who must choose between preserving their health and making their rent.
May we who have the fl exibility to care for our children when their schools close remember those who have no options.
May we who have to cancel our trips remember those who have no safe place to go.
May we who are losing our margin money in the tumult of the economic mar-ket remember those who have no margin at all.
May we who settle in for a quarantine at home remember those who have no home.
As fear grips our country, let us choose love.
And during this time when we may not be able to physically wrap our arms around each other, let us yet fi nd ways to be the loving embrace of God to our neighbors.
Amen. - Submitted by Fr. Michael Graham, S.J.

Beloved RetreatOur next Beloved Retreat will take place at the beauti-ful University of St. Mary of the Lake campus on the weekend of November 6-8, 2020. This retreat is a lay led, open and accepting weekend of being drenched in God’s unconditional love. We will explore our baptism and what it means to be baptized…and we will pon-der, “Was I baptized (only in the past) or AM I baptized (currently recognizing my identity as a beloved child of God)?”
All are welcome to this retreat. It is not a silent retreat, and it is not a “couples” retreat, although couples are certainly welcome to attend together. It is for anyone who wants to be spiritually fed.
Registration will begin in July with priority given to those on last year’s retreat wait-ing list. If you would like to have materials sent when registration opens up in July, please contact Mary Whiteside at [email protected].

Human Concerns
The Human Concerns Community...off ers assistance with life’s basic needs, spiritual and emotional support as well as additional resources with partners in our community while promoting mercy and justice by putting our faith into action.
May is National Mental Health Awareness MonthPope John Paul II’s 1977 message to healthcare workers in the L’Osservatore Ro-mano Weekly Edition states, “Whoever suff ers from mental illness always bears God’s image and likeness in (themselves), as does every human being. In addi-tion, (people with mental illness) always have the inalienable right not only to be considered as an image of God and therefore as a person, but also to be treated as such.”
The people of God, the church, are called to be communities of compassion, hope and justice for people with mental illness and their families. It is important that persons with mental illness feel welcomed and supported within the parish. This requires the purest spiritual outreach, i.e., non-judgmental love and acceptance of the individual. The more that parishes can project non-judgmental love, the more its members suff ering with mental illness, or those who have a family member with mental illness, are likely to acknowledge their needs and overcome their fears of rejection.
In these trying times during the COVID-19 shelter in place directives - isolation, grief, job loss and uncertainty are causing many to suff er mental health conditions. NAMI in Barrington is a local resource for anyone needing mental health support services. Contact them at www.namiba.org for more information.
Catholic Charities COVID-19 Collection on Mother’s DayThe Archdiocese of Chicago with Catholic Charities’ serves people in need through 70 programs and 150 locations across Cook and Lake counties while also providing unique service opportunities for various parish organizations. Once a year – on Mother’s Day – parishes across the Archdiocese of Chicago hold a col-lection for Catholic Charities.
This year, this special collection is hindered by the COVID-19 crisis. I’m reaching out to ask if you would be willing to donate funds to help those who reach out to Catholic Charities at this critical time. Your support will provide food, shelter, fi nan-cial assistance, counseling and more.
If you are in the position to support Catholic Charities, go to www.catholiccharities.net/donate or mail your gift to Catholic Charities, 721 N. LaSalle Street, Chicago, IL 60654. May God bless you and those you love this Mother's Day and always.
PADS Sheltering at Local Hotels Continues Th rough MayThe PADS regular season normally ends at the end of April. However, these times are anything but normal. It is with great pleasure to share with you that JOURNEYS | The Road Home is able to extend shelter to the 98 guests currently in the system until May 31. Holy Family will continue to assist with meals through-out the month of May due to the generosity of so many people.
Thank you -- and while Holy Family extends its prayers to each of you, please continue to keep our homeless community and those who serve them in your prayers.
