    Rejoice!

(Editor’s Note: As this bulletin goes to print, Fr. Terry is under the weather with the fl u. On short notice, Fr. Tim Monahan graciously agreed to write a refl ection on this weekend’s readings to share with all of you.)

“Rejoice!” Paul commands the Christians in Philippi, “I shall say it again: rejoice!” As we celebrate this third Sun-day of Advent, we hear this word resound in our liturgy: Rejoice! Th e little known prophet Zephaniah tells us to “Shout for joy”, “Sing joyfully” and “Be glad and exult with all your heart”! And what is the cause of our joy? With great simplicity, Paul remarks: “Th e Lord is near”, and Zephaniah echoes this by saying “Th e Lord, your God, is in your midst.”

As Christmas approaches, how are we living these days of preparation? Are we focused mainly on external prepara-tions, making sure that the perfect gift has been found? Or do we allow the inspired Word of God to touch our hearts and help us internally to prepare for Christmas? Does our internal preparation extend to our external preparations? Do we rejoice that the Lord is near, and are we willing to listen to John the Baptist as he tells us how to prepare? In our Gospel today, we continue Luke’s account from last Sunday and we fi nd John calling people to repentance in order to prepare for Jesus’ coming. Th e people who have come to John understand that it is not enough for them to desire a change in their lives; they must do something about it: “What should we do?”

Th is is a question that many of us ask, yet perhaps some have stopped asking it, thinking that they never get a response. It is noteworthy that John’s responses to this question are very grounded and reasonable: “Give to the poor. Share what you have. Live in the truth. Respect your limits.” John is not advocating a huge external change in peoples’ lives, but rather a deeper internal fi delity to the ordinary circumstances of those lives. It is important for us to understand that God can manifest himself to us right where we are, in the midst of our daily tasks. As Mother Teresa said: “Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies.” John the Baptist exhorts us to rectify certain problems in our daily lives and to live reality as God has given it to us. Let us

think about the authentic and good desires of our hearts that God wants us to live in the present moment, without fl eeing into the future or living in the past.

Th e gift of the Holy Spirit upon which we are meditating this weekend is Knowledge, which is often confused with Wisdom and Understanding. Wisdom is the contempla-tion and love of heavenly realities, which might seem very distant and abstract. With this gift of the Holy Spirit, we contemplate and love the beauty and power of who God is and the life he proposes to us. Understanding is a deeper certitude about our Faith which goes beyond an intellectual assent. When gifted with Understanding, we know in the depth of our being that what God has revealed is true.

Th is leads us to our current gift of Knowledge, which is not merely knowing more about God or our faith. Th e gift of Knowledge is surprisingly practical: it gives us the ability to judge everything in our life in the light of God’s truth and love. In a limited way, we can see our lives as God sees them, and with this gift we can determine what his plan is and how we fi t into it. Our Heavenly Father loves us deeply and wants us to live life to the full; yet we are created free and can choose to walk in his ways or not. Even when we choose to walk in his ways, sometimes we get confused choosing between two things that are both good: do I stay in my current job or do I accept this new off er? Do we stay in our comfy home or move to a new place that is available? Sometimes these choices can cause stress or anxiety, but let us listen to our second reading, where we hear these comforting words from Paul: “Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and peti-tion, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.” In following his advice, let us ask the Holy Spirit for this gift of Knowledge, trusting that he can help us to see clearly what we should do in the circumstances of our lives. May God open our hearts to his joy, and may he bless our Advent preparations!

    Th ird Sunday of Advent

    Zephaniah 3:14-18a Philippians 4:4-7 Luke 3:10-18

    “Rejoice in the Lord always!”

Th e word of the Lord came to Zephaniah and he announces to the people, “Shout!...Sing! Be glad and exult,” because your joy comes from God dwelling within you, and your sins are for-given. Restoration, he said, is realized through the justice of God. Paul encouraged the Philippians, whose “kind-ness should be known to all” to Rejoice, as the “Lord is near.” Paul instructs, have no anxiety; with prayer and petitions go to God! It is God who grants peace beyond understanding within their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. In Luke’s gospel, the crowds seek restoration and forgiveness through Baptism and ask John the Baptist, “What should we do?” John answers, you should live your lives with responsibility, integrity, and concern for others. Th e crowds asked if John is the Christ, to which he answers, that he (John) who baptizes with water is not worthy to untie Christ’s sandals, but the “Christ will come Baptiz-ing with the Holy Spirit and fi re” and they will be transformed. “Shout...Sing....Be glad and exult,” for the Lord dwells within and without! We are re-deemed through Christ Jesus!

    1. Do you expect compensation for your giv-ing of time or talent?2. How do you express joy?3. Have you experienced a Sacramental Reconciliation which brought you peace?

Prayer:God who created all things and who sent Jesus to be with us until the end of our days, hear my prayer this day that I may know the joy of the risen Lord. Give me an awareness that the Lord is indeed near and send the peace that surpasses all understanding into my heart. Th e Living Word

The King of Israel, the LORD,is in your midst, you have no further misfortune to fear. — Zephaniah 3:15b

What is a Retrouvaille Program? The word Retrouvaille™ (pronounced re-tro-vi with a long i) is a French word meaning rediscovery. The program offers tools needed to rediscover a loving marriage relationship. Thousands of couples who have experienced diffi culty in their marriage have been healed through this process. The Retrouvaille Program consists of a weekend experience combined with a series of 6-12 post-weekend sessions over 3 months. It provides the tools to help put your marriage in order again. The main emphasis of the program is on com-munication in marriage between husband and wife. It will give you the opportunity to rediscover each other and examine your lives together in a new and positive way.

What the Program is not. It is not a retreat, marriage counseling, or a sensitivity group. There are neither group dynamics nor group discussions on the weekend. It is not a time for hurt-ing; it is a time for healing.

Who is it for? It is for couples experiencing marital diffi culties including those who are consider-ing marriage separation and those who are already separated that want marriage help. The Retrouvaille program is not designed nor intended for couples in a co-habitating relationship.

For more information, contact our ministry leaders, Ray and Nancy at 847-907-3411 or visit www.helpourmarriage.com for dates of upcoming Retrouvaille weekends.

The S.M.A.R.T. MINISTRY will be having their end of the month, Thursday gathering as a Pot Luck dinner 6:30 pm on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013 at Holy Family in the Lower Level Meeting Rooms. All are invited to attend, bring a dish to share and invite a friend. RSVP to Dee Dee at [email protected]

Annulment Support Q. Does an annulment affect the legitimacy of your children?A. No. Legitimacy is conferred by the state, not by the Church. Church law specifi cally states that children born of a marriage, which has been declared invalid, are legitimate and remain legitimate. Just as a civil divorce does not make children illegitimate, neither does a church annulment.

    Q. How do you start an Annulment?A. You must be civilly divorced. Con-tact Jan Romanowski at 847-705-5761 or [email protected], or Rosemary Spinner at 847-991-7833 or [email protected]

Outreach & JusticeCatholic Social Teaching - Solidarity

www.usccb.orgWe are one human family whatever our na-tional, racial, ethnic, economic, and ideological differences. We are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers, wherever they may be. Loving our neighbor has global dimensions in a shrinking world. At the core of the virtue of solidarity is the pursuit of justice and peace. Pope Paul VI taught that “if you want peace, work for justice.”1 The Gospel calls us to be peacemakers. Our love for all our sisters and brothers demands that we promote peace in a world surrounded by violence and confl ict.

Tradition:The solidarity which binds all men together as members of a common family makes it impossible for wealthy nations to look with indifference upon the hunger, misery and poverty of other nations whose citizens are unable to enjoy even elementary human rights. The nations of the world are becoming more and more dependent on one another and it will not be possible to preserve a lasting peace so long as glaring economic and social imbalances persist. On Christianity and Social Progress (Mater et Magistra. . . ), #157

It is good for people to realize that purchasing is always a moral — and not simply economic — act. Hence the consumer has a specifi c social responsibility, which goes hand-in- hand with the social responsibility of the enterprise. Consumers should be continually educated regarding their daily role, which can be exercised with respect for moral principles with-out diminishing the intrinsic economic rationality of the act of purchasing… It can be helpful to promote new ways of marketing products from deprived areas of the world, so as to guarantee their producers a decent return. Charity in Truth (Caritas in Veritate. . . ),#66

Gifts of the Spirit – KnowledgeThis week we focus on the gift of Knowledge. One defi nition of that word is “clear awareness or explicit information, e.g. of a situation or fact.” Information on almost any subject is readily available to most of us, especially through the wonders of technology. We can know many things, but applying it to our daily lives takes effort, especially when applying it to Catholic so-cial teaching such as solidarity. Solidarity is ex-plained in further detail on this page. When we have knowledge of what is right versus wrong, we are held accountable. That can be intimi-dating, yet if we are called to follow in Jesus’ footsteps, we must apply what we are taught to every aspect of our daily lives. Knowledge is power – a power to be used for the common good of all.

ALLIANCE TO END HOMELESSNESSThe Alliance to End Homelessness in Suburban Cook County is the offi cial coordinator of a biennial Homeless Count of homeless persons, whether in shelters or living on the streets.

Why do we need a Count?• To gain person-specifi c informa-tion outlined in the 100,000 Homes Campaign to prioritize vulnerable home-less people for housing placement• To establish a baseline for our homeless population and to track our progress as we endeavor towards ending homelessness• To increase public awareness of homelessness throughout Cook County• To improve the ability of the alliance and homeless service providers (such as Journeys | The Road Home) to plan and implement effective services for the homeless• To preserve over $9 million in cur-rent federal funding for homeless services in suburban Cook County and enhance our ability to raise new funds in the future.

The Count dates are January 24, 25 and 26, 2013

Want to help? The Count will require groups of volunteers to go out each morn-ing to areas across the region where we know people who are homeless congre-gate. You will tally people that you en-counter and, if possibly, ask these indi-viduals a few questions. Training sessions will be held before the Count. Sign up to volunteer at http://suburbancook.wufoo.com/forms/homeless-count-2013/. If you’d like more information, contact Loren Seeger, Count Coordinator at [email protected] or 708.345.4025 x04.
