A warm welcome to the May/June issue of Families Fife – and I really hope it is warm! With the temperature heating up (all be

it a little slow), this issue is packed full of fun things to do over the coming months. If you are struggling to think of ideas for Summer holiday childcare, there are some suggestions and some great days out if you have the time off.

There are competitions to win tickets for the West Fife Farm Show and Aliens Love Underpants. These both sound great fun for children so go online to our website and get entering.

This issue, there is also a feature on choosing a nursery and some great ideas to get your children into sports.

‘Getting it Right’ in Fife

the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014 aims to help

improve the wellbeing of children and young people in Scotland.

Central to the Act is a requirement for local Authorities and health boards to provide the Named Person Service to every child and young person in their area. What will the Named Person do?The Named Person is there to offer advice, information, and support and, where necessary, to help children and young people access other services for help.Who will be the Named Person?

Your Named Person will normally be the health visitor, for a pre-school child, or a promoted teacher, such as a headteacher, or guidance teacher for a school age child.

The Named Person duties are integrated into their existing role and strengthen the support they currently provide, formalising their position as a central contact for children, parents and other people who are working with them.

Parents are, with very few exceptions, the best people to raise their children. Nothing in the Act changes a parents’ rights and responsibilities. For more information on GIRFEC or the Named Person Service in Fife, contact: [email protected]

more parents than ever send their children to

preschool or nursery, thanks to free places for three and four-year-olds, and for some two-year-olds.

Preschool is about learning through play and gets your child used to being separated from you and other carers. It helps kids become familiar with a more school-like environment and the behaviours expected there, such as sharing and taking turns.

ÊÊHow much free childcare am I entitled to? All three and four-year-olds in Scotland receive 600 hours annually - this can be in a preschool, nursery or with a registered childminder. ÊÊHow can I choose the right

preschool for my child? Get other local parents’ views, read Ofsted reports and most crucially take a look around and meet staff. ÊÊHow can I get my child

settled?

Staff will be aware that many young children need help getting used to new places and people and should have a settling in procedure – you may be able to stay during their first visits. Liat Hughes Joshi is a parenting journalist and the author of four books including ‘New Old-fashioned Parenting’ and ‘How to Unplug Your Child’ (both published by Summersdale) and Raising Children: The Primary Years (Pearson).

snappy Tags are the fastest, most cost-effective way to label clothing. They take seconds to apply, are secure and can be reused.Snappy Tags are a small button with your child’s name etched on, which is

applied, with the use of an applicator, to a care label on your child’s uniform.Snappy Tags are a quick, simple and cost-effective solution for school uniforms,

PE kits and other school equipment. You let us know the name you would like etched into the tags and we will send you the Snappy Tags and applicator, together with simple instructions. We guarantee the name won’t fade or wash off. The tags are easily attached to the care label of school uniforms – one click and it’s done! Parent to Parent travel & outdoors

spring has sprung and the (slightly!) warmer weather encourages us all to get

outside a bit more.We don’t need to boast when it comes to

our coast – our beaches speak for themselves. There are so many beautiful beaches in Fife, you’d be hard pressed to find a favourite. Our landscape means you won’t ever be too far from one either.

Beach walks offer so much: guddling around in rock pools (please put all creatures back where they belong afterwards!), working

harbours, kite-flying spots, acres of open space, birdlife, or even just good old sand castle building.

In case you need a little help, here are a few suggestions along Fife’s Fringe of Gold

st. Andrews West sandsA vast expanse of beautiful coastline in one of Scotland’s most picturesque towns and the setting for the famous Chariots of Fire opening scenes. This iconic cinematic image was recreated in hilarious style by Rowan Atkinson for the London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony at the very same location.

Excellent too for kite-sports and long, lazy walks. A lush landscape and great escape – all rolled into one.

elie ruby Bay – Blue Flag BeachA majesty of marine life can be found in the rock pools in Elie Ruby Bay. You’ll find barnacles and limpets, periwinkles and crabs and it is a fabulous spot to explore at low tide. You can walk right along to Elie Habour beach and take part in some water sports if you are feeling more adventurous. Or head into the village for restoring tea and cake instead!

leven – Full on FunCoastline doesn’t have to be contemplative and calming. The beach at Leven is perfect for the fizz and fun of family life. With picnic tables, a promenade, skateboard park, children’s play area and outdoor gym you’ll need a rest. Luckily with all of this comes sand, sea and glorious views.

These are just suggestions and Aberdour Black Sands, Silver Sands, Anstruther Billowness, Crail Roome Bay, Lower Largo and countless others mean you really are spoilt for choice.

There’s only one thing for it….…you’re going to have get out there and sample them all for yourself!

Fife Coast & Countryside Trust manage 14 of Fife’s Beaches and their website gives lots of information on all of these along with practical advice like directions, parking and facilities. www.fifecoastandcountrysidetrust.co.uk

Are you expecting a baby?

WHY YOU LIKE LIvING WHERE YOU DO? Born and raised in Perth, I find the area really nice for bringing up kids with access to the great outdoors and just on the doorstep to swimming, skating, dancing and so many more fun activities to do throughout the week. In recent years the growth in this area to get children more active is great to see and choice is second to none. Having dealt with a fair few parents in my classes you find those with children spread the word, are loyal and support classes in the Perthshire area.FavOURITE SHOP: Rae Peacock Hair is an awesome hairdressers with fab service and a chilled out vibe where you are really made to feel special (and awesome homemade brownies too)! A definite treat for me when I get the time!!FavOURITE PaRK: I have to say in Perth we are fairly lucky with our parks so I have to support the North and South inch parks. Further afield we like to visit Macrosty park in Crieff and Kirkgate park in Kinross. FavOURITE CHILDREN’S CLUB/CLaSS: My son has recently started Taekwondo at Moncrieffe church hall in Craigie run by

Ms Dewar who has a wealth of knowledge and passion and the discipline and activity taught at class is great for him. For my daughter, I am looking into dance classes but I know Inspire Studio at Highland house has a great range of classes and is where I myself teach post Natal pilates. They also both enjoy Swimming lessons at Live Active Leisure which run from Perth Leisure Pool and Findlay has also tried the ice skating at Dewars which is great fun too. FavOURITE DaY OUT: We like Edinburgh Zoo or Blair Drummond Safari park as it keeps the kids entertained from start to finish and you can take a picnic and make a day of it, meeting up with friends or bringing family - only downside can be the weather!! FavOURITE CHILD FRIENDLY RESTaURaNT: As a family we like the Maltings in Perth or Frankie & Benny’s for their child friendly environment and good menu choices.PROUDEST ECO-FRIENDLY MOMENT: Remembering to switch off the lights when not required.FavOURITE NIGHT OUT WITHOUT THE KIDS. Booking an escape away to a hotel

and chilling out using the Leisure facilities or going to the cinema.BEST PLaNET SavING TIP: Don’t overfill your kettle - only boil as much as you need.NO PaRENT SHOULD BE WITHOUT: Wellie Boots and a change of clothes.PaRENTING PET HaTES: Kids not listening and repeating yourself constantly!! MOST EMBaRRaSSING MOMENT: While driving my first car, a Peugeot 205, I was travelling back to Edinburgh where I was studying and while on the motorway could not understand why there was massive gusts of wind hitting the back of my neck until I realised my boot had flown open!! I was mortified to say the least.FUNNIEST COMMENT YOUR KIDS HavE EvER MaDE: When my daughter was born my son, then 3, announced to the maternity unit at Perth Royal Infirmary “ Is she staying here then “ to be told well actually this is your new baby sister. Possibly not telling him until then that he was to be a big brother and mummy hadn’t actually eaten a lot of cake was not my best plan!FavOURITE FaMILY HOLIDaY SPOT:Centre Parcs - everything is on site and at your disposal and the fact that cars are parked off site makes it safe for the kids to explore and enjoy the outdoors. MOST LOvED CHILDREN’S BOOK: We are the biggest fans of Julia Donaldson books in our house and have just about the whole collection from Gruffalo to Tabby Mctat.BEST CHILDREN DvD OR TELEvISION PROGRaMME: Wreck it Ralph / Paw Patrol or Sophia the first are all well watched in our house. Have a look at www.mbody.org.uk for more information about my ventures.

I’m Katie Johnston ( 36yrs) from Perth owner of Mbody Therapies & MummyFit Perth, mother to Findlay (6) and Hayley (3) who inspired me to pursue my interest in fitness and classes for mothers and babies and develop these in my local community alongside my massage therapies business which is now located at the newly opened Club 300 in Perth. As a first time mum I knew there was a gap in the market for parent and child classes so I established Pre Natal Pilates, Buggy Fitness, Post natal Pilates & Baby and with my recent addition of Hartbeeps Perthshire, a franchise which offers classes for children from birth to 4 years.

is Fostering for you?there are thousands of children who want to have a safe place to call home with

someone to look out for them and show them they have a future. Foster carers can come from all sorts of backgrounds. If you are over the age of 25, have a spare bedroom and would like to make a difference in a child’s life, then maybe fostering could be for you.

Fostering Relations is a small independent fostering agency covering Central Scotland. We are designed to meet a wide range of children’s needs including complex behavioural issues and provide our carers with the support and training required to deal with these.

summer childcare and Activities

Worried how you’ll juggle work with childcare over the never-ending

summer holidays? Relax – there are plenty of options to ensure you’ll still be employed come the middle of August…

Looking after your children during the summer holidays is no easy feat for any working parent, with many mums and dads resorting to booking their annual leave separately to ensure someone keeps an eye on the kids. But it doesn’t have to be that way – regardless of your budget, there are many affordable solutions to keep those wages coming in while your little ones enjoy the summer break.

relativesYour first port of call should be looking at close family members to see if anyone could potentially help out. Your parents or in-laws are ideal, as most will revel in the chance to spoil their grandchildren with days out and endless supplies of ice cream! Bear in mind their age and don’t over-burden them if they agree to help, sticking to set times and helping with packed lunches or sending your kids with pocket money towards yet another trip to the zoo. It might be free childcare for you but that doesn’t mean it won’t cost your parents!

school mumsWhy not have a chat with other mums at the school gates to see if they can help? A win-win situation; your child gets to spend the day with one of their friends – plus you save on childcare costs! Make sure you only ask mums you feel confident leaving your child with – and who your little one feels comfortable around – and take a little gesture of thanks over at the end of the day, such as a small box of chocolates. However, most mums might instead prefer a ‘play date swap’ in return, where they look after your child one day in the week and you look after theirs another.

childmindersFor many wo rking parents, childminders are the best option over the school holidays, often sticking to the same person they

normally get to do the school drop off and pick up. If you don’t have one, ask friends and other mums who they recommend, or look online for Ofsted-registered carers. A more affordable solution to higher-priced kids’ clubs, remember to ask what stipulations they have, such as you providing your child’s meals or whether you’re expected to pay if they are sick or you go away.

Holiday play schemes/summer campsOpen most kids’ school bags towards the end of term and you’ll find half a dozen leaflets offering discounted daycare for specific age groups and boasting a number of fun activities. Usually catered to fit around school hours, they are often based on themes to appeal to your youngster, with football, science, dance and drama top of the hit-list. Run privately or by your local council, this competitively priced option can be booked on a daily or weekly basis and is a fun-filled way for your little one to meet new friends and gain skills in the process.

Working from homeLast, but by no means least, is the hope your boss might be sympathetic to your situation and agree to let you work from home every now and then. Explain your childcare struggle as soon as you can, asking if a day a week might be an option over the holidays before giving them time to think about it. If they agree, make sure you complete all tasks assigned to you on time – regardless of the distractions that come with a demanding child at home! Not getting your job done at home will soon be picked up by management, meaning you’ll most definitely be refused if you ever broach the subject again! Levenhall Links is a beautiful site for nature in the heart of East Lothian, parts of which have been specifically created from reclaimed land for the benefit of wildlife. Hundreds of birds, mammals and insects have been spotted there including: oystercatchers, curlews, redshanks and redpolls, as well as a raft of butterflies, moths and brown hares. Take a stroll along the coast or through the woodland to see some of this local wildlife before joining RSPB Scotland by the boating pond for a fun-filled day outdoors.

Take in some live music, tantalise your taste buds with scrumptious local food and visit some of the 100+ stalls to inspire you about nature. RSPB Scotland has picked the puffin as the featured bird species for the festival this year and will be highlighting the good work going on to conserve this

colourful seabird over the weekend. Visitors can pop in to one of the puffin talks or hop aboard a seabird cruise to try and spot them out on the Firth of Forth.

Levenhall Links can be accessed easily by bus, rail, car and bike. The RSPB are also running a half price ticket offer for early birds (Ts & Cs apply) and all children under 5 get in free to the event.

For more information and to buy tickets, head to: bignaturefestival.org.uk or find RSPB Scotland on Twitter and Facebook for all the latest updates. • Ticket prices: £12 adults, £10 concessions (RSPB Members), £2 children, under 5’s free, £20 weekend pass, £18 weekend concession. Half Price early bird offer available (T’s&C’s apply).• Opening times: 10 am until 5.30 pm Saturday and Sunday.

children in Dunfermline and the surrounding areas are in toy joy with

the arrival of The Entertainer toyshop, which officially opened in March at Kingsgate Shopping Centre.

It brings a huge range of fun; from board games, arts & crafts to kids favourites like Star Wars, Lego and Disney.

The Entertainer is the biggest independent toy retailer in the UK and features prominently within Kingsgate Shopping Centre along side other popular high street names such as Debenhams, H&M, River Island, Topshop, Marks & Spencer’s and Waterstones.

Neil Mackie, centre manager of Kingsgate, said:

“This opening has been a fantastic addition to Kingsgate. In the past, families would have often traveled further afield for a dedicated toy store; now they have The Entertainer on their doorstep.” For more information about Kingsgate and The Entertainer follow @KingsgateCentre on Twitter or Kingsgate Shopping Centre on Facebook and visit www.shopkingsgate.co.uk

Your local Kumon Study Centre offers maths and English study

programmes, tailored to all ages and abilities. As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to it. Individual differentiation ensures that the material each student encounters extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability. This unique benefit makes Kumon an effective complement to the school curriculum.

The OECD Pisa test results highlight that the UK is falling behind global peers in the international tests taken by 15-year-olds, having failed to make it into the top 20 in both maths and reading. Established for over 50 years, the Kumon programmes enable children to develop their study skills and confidently tackle advanced work.

At Kumon, we aim for our maths and English students to reach Kumon International Standard, an international approximation of school grade, within their first year of study. By studying beyond the international standard for their age, children are best prepared to succeed in an increasingly global community.

LET’S DO a PLaY!it’s Play Time at the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy

as our young students gather all their creativity, imaginations, whacky ideas and silly suggestions to devise and improvise a series of plays to perform at the end of term. For many children, this is the chance to show their confidence, their dramatic moves: for others, their clear voices and wonderful facial expressions, and for many the considerable achievement of being able to stand on a stage and join in with the others. The students will be offered a variety of themes, from Animal Olympics to French restaurants, from Egyptian museums to Parties on the beach, and from these ideas they will create together some fantastic entertainment for their parents and friends. At Your Space Music Lessons we know what it’s like to feel remote and

disconnected from main stream services. Our HQ is in the Outer Hebrides on the Isle of North Uist, where Olwen Macleod dreamed up an idea to spread music tuition around the world using everyday technology.

Now people globally are connecting to a network of online music teachers and taking weekly one-to-one lessons to learn an instrument. As it is not confined to any age group, children and adults are taking to learning online and feeling the benefits. Your Space Music Lessons handpick exceptional teachers who transfer their amazing enthusiasm for music over the internet, and with no travelling students feel relaxed in their own home whilst the rest of the family can continue with their own home activities.

Since installing a piano a year ago the Fletcher family wanted to learn at home together, so Your Space Music Lessons arranged for each member of the family to have a different piano teacher, and they are taught one after the other over Skype. It’s a solution that never could have been achieved without the Internet.

All you need is a computer with a webcam and a reliable Internet connection. Download the Skype program for free and

then they can teach you.The first three lessons are offered at

an introductory price of £30 (3x 30 minute sessions), and all future lessons are £15 for 30 minutes. To find out more and take a FREE introductory lesson visit their website: www.yourspacemusiclessons.comPupil testimonials (trustpilot)‘Using Skype is much easier than I thought it would be and in fact I forget that she isn’t in the same room as me!’

‘Professional inspiring teachers are enabling my daughter to learn to play the piano in a joyful way.’

‘No commuting or time spent waiting, just learning at home. Lessons easy to book and pay. Opportunities to play to others in on line concerts. Grade exams easily organised.’

‘Having lessons in the comfort of our own home is so much easier. The quality of the lessons are brilliant, it is as if she is in the room!’

did you know that arts, craft & messy play has

so many benefits for your children including building their confidence, developing their fine motor skills, enhancing their learning by solving problems as well as having lots of fun! Each week at our classes we have new crafts activities for them to try out and explore without

having any mess at home. The Summer term has

started with Doodle & Splat, however it is never too late to come along and join in the fun. And remember if you have a SPREE voucher you can come along and try out your first class for FREE. To come to one of our classes, just have a look at the class timetable on www.

doodleandsplat.co.uk and then drop us an email with which class you would like to try.

community Use Schools in Dunfermline understand the challenges of being a

working parent. That’s why they’ve come up with an exciting weekend menu of activities for busy families. Area Manager, Scott Fenton, explains: “As working parents with 3 boys we always struggled to attend mid-week classes. Fortunately I was in a position to act so we came up with a weekend programme of activities for pre-school & primary kids”.

The classes at Queen Anne and

Dunfermline High School provide a learning pathway which allows kids to attend different activities as they grow – gymnastics, drama, football & art. Parents can attend some activities with their kids, watch them enjoying learning new skills or grab a freshly ground coffee and hot morning roll (and some peace!) at our modern cafes. a new block of weekend classes start at the end of January so contact your local Community Use School today.

most parents agree that getting young children involved in sport

from a young age will help them to keep fit and get into the habit of enjoying regular exercise.

Outdoor sports are a great way for children to get some fresh air and have fun with their friends. But how do you choose which sport is right for your child?

Here are five outdoor options they will love:1. FOOTBaLL Children can start from reception age and there are clubs that offer coaching during the holidays for children from five to 11 years. These are usually a morning or afternoon class where young children are introduced to the basic skills of the sport. 2. RUGBY Don’t panic: kids’ rugby is not about scrums, mauls and tackling or complicated rules. Children are encouraged to play a simple, non-contact game together and the focus is on passing and running skills. Most clubs start youngsters off at the age of six or seven.

3. TENNIS Children from three can learn the basic skills of the game using smaller courts and nets and with child-sized rackets. Some clubs will also have squash and badminton courts.4. HOCKEY The game is much gentler than that for adults and sticks and pitches are smaller. Some clubs offer “Quicksticks”, suitable from seven, which is a four-a-side game that can be played anywhere and uses a bigger ball for safety. 5. MULTI-SPORTS Not sure which sport to choose? Look for multi-sports sessions by local authorities where kids can try a variety of sports. These are often available in the summer holidays and are a great way for kids to find out what they really like. adrian Warner has been a sports journalist for 30 years and has reported from 13 Olympic Games and 5 World Cups for Reuters, London’s Evening Standard and the BBC.
