The Art of Photography: Black & WhiteBy Stuart Russell

To me, black and white photography is all about creating an atmosphere. It’s all about trying to convey light and dark and concentrating onphysical details. It is hard to visualise something monochrome in ourvibrant world and it takes a lot of creativity and imagination to create apowerful image. It is far better to take a coloured photograph, and thenconvert to black and white afterwards.

By ignoring colour distraction, you must pay close attention looking atwhere light and dark are conveyed. Concentrate on the physical aspectsof an image such as shape, form, and texture. You can followthe composition techniques described in my first post for ideas.

Light is always important in photography and in black and white imageslighting really makes a difference in depth, drama and intensity. As anature photographer the sunlight is my main tool but you can getinteresting effects usingartificial lighting too. I willtalk more about light inmy next post.

Remember to experimentwith your camera and tryto develop quirkytechniques that supportyour black and whiteimages. No photographeris the same and there isno point in aspiring toanother or getting boggeddown with pretension andtechnical details. Black and white photography is fun. Enjoy it! Createimages that work visually and artistically for your own pleasure. Yourown emotion, thoughts and character should be able to shine throughyour monochromatic images. You’ll be surprised.
