1. Before You Begin

1.1 Planning and design guidelines FDM Express is an on-the-go version of Field Device Manager designed for use in the

maintenance shop and suitable for installation in a Win 7 laptop or desktop PC. It is

important that you plan the installation of FDM Express, so please refer to EP03-480-,

Field Device Manager Express Specifications, for information on PC hardware, PC

operating system, and peripheral requirements. Also, refer to the specifications for

details about performance and operational limits and to decide upon the number of tag

licenses you need. Up to 1000 tags are supported by FDM Express.

ATTENTION

FDM server installation includes installation of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Service Pack1. As a result, FDM server installation takes considerable time.

Client and RCI are required and they are automatically selected and installed during

the installation.

FDM Client: FDM client is the user interface component of the FDM application.

The client enables you to connect-to FDM Server and performs various

functionalities supported by FDM.

FDM RCI: Remote Communication Interface (RCI) is the component in FDM that

manages the interaction with devices connected to the communication interfaces. It

is also included in the FDM Express installation. The following table lists the

communication interfaces and the respective device which can be connected.

Communication Interfaces Devices

HART Profibus

RS-232 HART Modem Supported Not applicable

Overview

In FDM Express, the installed server handles the database required to the store device

information. The FDM Express server, along with FDM Remote Communication

Interface component, enables the FDM Express Client to access the required data from

devices connected via a MUX, modem or Comm DTM network.

FDM Express is installed in a Win 7 or Windows 2008 laptop or desktop computer for

use with locally available HART or PROFIBUS instruments.

Typical Architecture of FDM Express

The following diagram depicts the network architecture of FDM Express as used in the

maintenance shop.

RS-232 HART modem: FDM uses the RS-232 HART Modem to communicate

with HART devices using the serial port. A USB-to-RS-232 adaptor is required

for a laptop.

Honeywell HART DE modem: The Honeywell HART DE Modem provides the

network communication interface to HART devices. Again, aUSB-to-RS-232

adaptor is required.

RS-485 HART multiplexer: Using a USB-to-RS485 adaptor, FDM can

communicate to multiple HART devices in the field connected to HART

Multiplexers. A single HART Multiplexer network can support up to 31

multiplexers.

Comm DTM Interface: FDM supports communications to Profibus and HART-

over-Profibus devices using FDT/DTM technology.

See the FDM User’s Guide for more information about these different network types.

3.4 First logon You must provide valid user credentials to log on to FDM Client or FDM Server

Management Tool. FDM has a predefined user name Administrator.

When you launch FDM client, you can specify the server name to which the client must

connect to. For the first login, you must enter the server name. If FDM client connects to

the specified FDM server, then the server name is saved and it is available for selection

in the dropdown list during subsequent logins. After the connection to the server, enter

the following login details:

Login Name: administrator
