September 2013 Newsletter

Recently I had the opportunity to attend a conference where speakers represented PGA leadership, the National Golf Foundation and independent research firms, which have been studying the golf industry over the past several years. There has been much discus-sion regarding the “Get Golf Ready” Initia-

tive, “Tee It Forward” and most recently the “While We Are Still Young” promotions. All of these programs were started in an effort to address some of the issues identi-fied as affecting golf in a negative way.

They reminded us that the largest segment of core golfers is the baby boomers, those Americans born between 1946-1964. Alderbrook G&YC has been identified as an afford-able residential golf community and due to its rural loca-tion tends to attract non-working or weekend residents. Should these facts be true then it would be natural to ex-pect that during the next twenty years living in Alderbrook should be very inviting to retiring baby boomers. The fu-ture should be bright for Alderbrook, but if we are to achieve our full potential we need to focus on the third component of the “Alderbrook Golf Community”.

A definition of “Community” is an interacting population of various kinds of individuals living in a common loca-tion. The statement has been made that “a community

can help in making a peaceful and progressive society. Likewise, any imbalance could give rise to umpteen prob-lems that are disrupting peace and harmony. Over the past few years we seem to have experienced an increase in communicated discontent among some community members, which is cause for concern. Perhaps the state-ment “any imbalance in the community could give rise to umpteen problems that disrupt peace and harmony may explain some of the frustration expressed by a few com-munity members.

In a recent conversation with one such member I asked what originally attracted him to the community and he explained that he was not a golfer, but he was a yachts-man and was able to moor his boat year around at the resort dock. Instead of going out his back door to play golf he could run down to the dock and hop in his boat and away he went. Our member no longer has a boat and feels that there are no other activities in the community that he can participate in, his value factor is affected. Keep in mind that perceived value is often calculated by how much usefulness or pleasure an individual gets from a commodity or service.

In a recent conversation with Phil Werdal, managing part-ner of Alderbrook Properties, we discussed ideas of how we could increase value perception

AGYC Board Meeting Summary

Please be advised that a copy of the complete Board minutes, along with all reports submitted at the meeting, can be found on the AGYC Web site and in the Office.

On Wednesday, August 14, 2013 the Board met at 6:00 PM after having dinner in the Clubhouse with the members.

Donna Taylor presented the Board with a petition signed by several mem-bers, asking that Alderbrook Properties be prohibited from renting Alderbrook Property homes to guests of the Re-sort. Discussions are taking place with the Resort and Alderbrook Properties to try and find a remedy for the prob-lems that have arisen as a result of these rentals. An ad hoc committee is being set up to review all long and short term rentals within Alderbrook.

Ron Bock, Treasurer, reports that July was a good month for AGYC financial-ly. Revenue is up and expenses are down. Rick has also received numer-ous compliments on the condition of the course.

An extensive list of changes to our Policies and Procedures was approved by the Board. These changes were made after review and recommenda-tion by the Document Review Commit-tee. The changes are posted online.

The Green Committee has been oper-ating with only three members of the golfing membership, whereas Policies state that it shall consist of at least six members. Pete Skogstad, Linda Cre-swell and Jean Fields each volun-teered to be on the Green Committee.

Ivan Budd asked the Board to review the current policy on transfer fees when building within Alderbrook.

A proposal was presented by Ron Bock, which would better manage funds received from the collection of delinquent accounts and from the sale of Alderbrook Property Homes. Rather than deposit these monies in the Re-serve Account and risk tax liability, it is proposed that the funds be placed in the Contingency Account and in the General Operating Fund.

The next Board meeting will be held on Monday, September 23, 2013 at 6:00 PM at the Clubhouse. All members are welcome!

Condolences

to the family of

Anne Gilbert

Ann, a long time resident of Alder-

brook, passed away May 15 of cancer.

She was an avid golfer, bridge player

and gardener; she wrote the

“gardening” article for

the Foremast for a number of years.

A memorial service to be announced.

to existing and new home buyers. First we determined that we need to clearly identify the positive activities that our community already offers and then look at the possi-bility of developing or supporting new community pro-grams. We have a quality golf course that caters to all lev-el of golfers, Yacht Club, active Men’s & Ladies golf clubs, Putters club, Garden club, ladies exercise, card players, Ping Pong and I am sure a few others we failed to identify.

Our community has solid business relationships with Alderbrook Properties and Alderbrook Resort & Spa. Our clubhouse was built by the construction division of Alder-brook Properties under the supervision of Aaron Nester; plus they donated additional labor and approximately $100,000 to the project. Alderbrook Properties continues to promote AGYC in all their marketing efforts and every one of their sales generates a new community member. The relationship between Alderbrook Resort & Spa and our community is better than ever with the arrival of

Shaun Tucker, their new general manager.

The Resort now includes the golf course in their marketing efforts including their monthly newsletter that goes out to a data base of approximately 22,000. The Resort is also putting promotional materials in their guest rooms and has included golf in their weekly activities, plus they have added a phone extension to transfer calls for tee times to the golf shop. Many of you may not remember that the owners of the Resort & Spa also own the land that the driving range is on, which they allow the community to use at no charge.

Alderbrook is a wonderful community with strong busi-ness partners, but we do need to see if we can find ways to add value or activities for our non-golfing residents. By focusing on our strengths while finding ways of creating additional amenities, we can create an excitement that can be magnetic. Those are my thoughts and I look for-ward to hearing yours.

AGYC Board Room

From the Head Golf Pro by Justin Gravatt

We are wrapping up on the activities for the season, but there are a couple re-maining events you don’t want to miss. Make sure to sign up for the Men vs. La-dies Golf Tournament on Thursday Sep-tember 19th. This is always a fun event with a dessert auction following golf.

The Men’s Club Field day is an 8:00 AM shotgun on September 21st. This event is free and the women

will be cooking and serving the men after the event. It is always well attended so sign up now.

Even though the season is winding down we still have new merchandise arriving in the Pro Shop. For in-stance we just received a shipment of the very popu-lar Super Stroke putter grips. We have lots of new Adams Golf hybrids and TightLies fairway woods to demo. Also a new arrival is the Addias Golf Clima Cool ladies line.

Stop in and see if we have your size or let us know if there is anything you would like to demo. See you on the course!

Wickiup Reservations?

Please contact the office if you want to reserve the Wickiup. This year there is a $10:00 cost for propane for the BBQ. The money is designated to cover the cost of propane and also the annual maintenance cost of the BBQ.

42nd

Annual Oscar A. Puetz Invitational

I want to thank everyone who played in this year’s tournament for chari-ty. This year’s Grand Champions are Bob Rogers and Delores “Long Ball” Barrett. Congratulations to them.

We raised $2,138.00 for charity. The tournament helped four families this year. They were able to purchase much needed school clothes and shoes, along with other basic needs.

I especially want to thank Diane Budd for the pictures of me on a stick(see picture below). I was totally surprised!

Thanks again for your support and we will see you next year!

Men’s Club News By Karl Anderson

I play golf because it’s fun – Bubba Watson

Our August weather was fantastic - all but the last few days. I hope every-one had fun playing as

much golf as possible. September should be just as good for great golf and lots of Men’s Club activities.

Congratulations to our new 2-Man Best Ball Champion Team, John Lester and Jeff McHargue. Way to go guys.

The September Men’s Club meeting will be held on September 11th due to the grounds crew starting greens aera-tion on September 3rd. We have 10 tee times available to play at Fort Lewis’ Eagles Pride Golf Course on September 4th. Check the signup sheet on the Bulletin Board.

Alderbrook Challenge has been post-poned until the 11th. Holes #8 and #18 will be played at that time. If you missed a week of the Challenge, you can make it up that week.

We had a great time playing our Home & Home against Sunland Golf and Country Club. The final results were Alderbrook 66, Sunland 33. Connie did another great job on the lunch and our guests especially liked the mac ‘n cheese.

Don’t miss out on all the Home & Home fun. We’ll be at Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club September 18th and then host them on the 25th.

Men’s Field Day is on Saturday Sep-tember 21st, 9:00am shotgun, food and drink after play at the Wickiup.

The Annual Men’s Club Awards Dinner and Brook Cup will be on Saturday October 5th and the Saturday Turkey Shoot will be on October 26th.

Effective August 7th, the Men’s Club membership voted to change payouts on Perfect Games to $50 and on Hole-In-Ones to $150.

Club Championship. Congratulations to Lorna Martinson (Pictured on Right) our 18 Hole Ladies Club Champion; and to Jan McClure and Diana Cation – 9 Hole Champs. And also to Deanna Hill – low net of the field. A com-plete list of all the winners is posted on the bulletin board.

Captain’s Cup. Kudos to Alice Chapman, who won all of her matches to claim this year’s Captain’s Cup tournament for the 18 holers.

Meeting Time & Golf Games. Because of aer-ation of the greens, there will be an “away event” at Ft. Lewis on September 3rd – sign up on the bulletin board. On Tuesday, Sep-tember 10, there will be an 18 hole scramble, followed by lunch, social, and monthly meeting.

Committees. All our fun events don’t happen by themselves. Be sure to volunteer for a

committee. As someone said, “many hands make light work!”

Field Day. Mark Tuesday, September 17 on your calendars for a day of 18 holes of goofy golf followed by lunch at the Wickiup and prizes for everyone! Sign up on the bulletin board.

Men vs. Ladies/ Karen Hilburn Breast and Cervical Cancer Reach to Give Dessert Auc-tion. Don’t forget to sign up for this Septem-ber 19th fun event. Check the article (Page 6) in the Foremast & the bulletin board for de-tails. Remember that the ladies beat the men last year – the challenge is on to do it again!

Volunteers needed for Men’s Field Day. The guys help us out with our First Mates Tourna-ment. Now it’s time to return the favor – sign up to help at their September 21 event at the Wickiup.

Calendar Change. Minor revision for Thurs-day, September 26 – 9am shotgun instead of tee times in order to accommodate a large outside group from the Resort.

September Gardening Tips by Debra Anderson

from organicgardening.com

Tree and Perennial Planting. Hardy perennials may not be blooming, but fall is the best time to plant them. Trees, too. The rain will get them established naturally. Their roots will spread through the soil in preparation for strong, healthy growth in spring, even though they appear idle.

Beautiful Bulbs. Plant daffodils, tulips, and other spring blooming bulbs after temperatures cool. Get many vari-eties for blooms from early spring to June. Where bulb-eating pests are a problem, sink a wire mesh basket into the ground, fill with soil, and plant the bulbs inside it.

Pest Problems. Prevent pest and disease problems next year by removing plant waste on the ground that can become home to slugs and disease spores. Compost dead or dying disease-free annuals. Diseased plant parts go in the garbage.

Potted Plants. Move tender potted plants to a protect-ed area before the first frost arrives.

Lawn Care. Fertilize the lawn with a complete organic fertilizer recommended for fall application.

Eat Local. Support local farm-ers by purchasing fall produce like carrots, potatoes, and win-ter squash at farmers markets and farmstands.

Environmental Committee

Many thanks to Mike Logan, Jack Butler, Gary Brockmann, Jim Gallagher, and Gary Dufresne for their time supervising the composting area in August.

The big hanging basket mystery. One of the hanging baskets on Beach Drive disappeared for over two weeks during the summer. Not so strange that one of our baskets was stolen, but very strange that it was returned. If only the pe-tunias could talk! Another year, another story!

Coming up the third weekend in October: "Heads Up" for the Fall Clean-Up. The Com-mittee is encouraging everyone to clean up their home area as well as some area around the neighborhood. Check with your neighbors, work as a team, finish with a block party. It can be fun to do together.

Ninety nine members and guests attended the August 19th seafood bake & grill. Chef Scott Westover and sous chef Norm Hammer (pictured below) did a great job preparing the hali-but and salmon. And of course the potluck dishes and desserts were fabulous as well.

New members welcomed aboard in August were Jeff & Sue Wright, Jan & Julie Hinman and Jeff McHargue.

You definitely don’t want to miss the next Yacht Club slated for Monday, September 16th. Social Hour and the Bocce competition will begin at 3:00 and Dinner at 5:00. The fare will be BBQ ribs.

Be sure to buy your tickets for the money pot and the bottle raffle. They will be available at the sign-in table. Winners in August were: Linda Byars for the 50/50 money pot. She won half of $142. Tim Micek won the bottle raffle.

Congratulations to the Bocce Tournament win-ners Jake & Eldeen Hen-dricks. They won in July too. . . be prepared for some stiff competition when you play them next.

By the way, did you notice the new food table? We can thank Craig Chapman for his carpentry skills in building it (with Alice’s as-sistance, of course). Thanks also to Gerry Hendricks for painting it. The table is a permanent structure and is there for the use of other groups as well as Yacht Club.

If you would like to join Yacht Club, or get more in-formation, contact Craig Chapman at 898-7898, [email protected]; or Rhonda Westover at 898-0171, [email protected].
