Grand High Priest’s Message

Greetings Companions,

On Saturday September 22nd at the Grand Master’s Class, we had the privilege of honoring MW James Kendall by conferring the Chapter Degrees for four candidates culminating in the Holy Royal Arch. Our Deputy Grand High Priest, REC Pat Stanton, has put forth the great idea that at Blue Lodge District meetings we invite worthy Brother Master Masons to receive the Degree of Mark Master at no charge. I have accepted the resignation of our Grand Secretary REC Michael Smitson and we thank him for the service he has provided our Grand Chapter. I have appointed VEC Tom Christie Acting Grand Secretary to serve in this capacity until the election and installation of Grand Officers at our 2019 Annual Grand Chapter Convocation. On Tuesday October 8th, I will pay an Official Visit to Fellowship Chapter #61 and on Monday, October 15th, I will attend International Night at my Official Visit to Bellingham Bay #12. I will be attending the Grand Lodge of China in Taiwan and visiting family during the last two weeks of October. For that time as per Grand Chapter Code, REC Pat Stanton will assume responsibility for all matters relating to our Grand Chapter.

Illustrious Grand Master’s Message

Companions: Fall is now here and we are now in the full swing of Masonic activities. The time for the Grand Master’s Class for York Rite Degrees and Orders is here, and the Chapter Degrees were conferred on Saturday, September 22nd. The Council Degrees and Commandery Orders will be conferred on Saturday, December 15th at the Masonic Center at 5th and Warren in Bremerton, beginning at 8:00AM. I hope to see a large turnout of York Rite Masons there. Note that the date for the Council Degrees and Commandery Orders has been changed from November 17th to December 15th. This was necessary due to a conflict in the Grand Master’s schedule. I encourage all Companions to make an effort to attend, as the presentations will be truly impressive with experienced casts conferring the Degrees and Orders. It is an opportunity not to be missed. At my Official Visits, I am emphasizing several goals which are dear to my heart. Councils are encouraged to have educational programs at each meeting as the lessons of our degrees contain allegories and symbols with profound meanings. I am also encouraging communication with all members so that none will feel left out and forgotten even if for various reasons they are unable to attend, and that includes those who are not electronically connected. I encourage Councils to consider the various awards available which are listed in the Master of Arch Handbook, available on the Grand Council website. Although not yet incorporated in the Master of Arch Handbook, I also encourage the Illustrious Masters to consider the Ish Sodi award. This award is designed to recognize a Companion who has been particularly helpful to the Illustrious Master in assisting him and in providing advice when requested. It is accompanied by a very nice medal and certificate. Finally, I encourage each Companion to become familiar with the great strides being made by the Cryptic Masons Medical Research Foundation. The progress being made by the researchers supported by this Foundation has been truly impressive. I encourage donations to support this research to the extent that is within your means. More next month, and I wish you all health and happiness in all of your endeavors.

Grand Commander’s Message

Greetings Sir Knights! Wow! October already, time to start winterizing for the coming winter. As we begin that process it is also time to think about the harvest and what needs to be done so everything can be brought in on time and with the most economy of effort. Holidays too are beginning to make their way into our planning, much to do to be ready. Okay, so what has this all go to do with Templary? This entry into the fall harvest season is a perfect time to look around you and see what opportunities you have to increase your profits in Masonry. What tasks can you perform to better your Lodge, Chapter, Council or Commandery and prepare it to better serve you and your community? What are the needs of your fellows, are there any who are possibly going to be short in their harvest that you may assist or find a way to supplement that they will not suffer without in the upcoming winter months ahead? As soldiers and shepherds of Christ, have you given thought to the care and defenses of our Widows and our Fraters no longer able to assist in the battle? What can you do to contribute to their relief over the coming winter? Who may need a visit or a call, a ride or a meal? My Fraters, as I travel amongst you I observe a tremendous force for good and serving others. I see a number of groups of men who have bonded together to do things and to celebrate and enjoy all that our Fraternity has to offer. In some areas we are growing, in some holding our own and in some, barely hanging on. We have one Commandery that is actively and aggressively fighting to come back and overcome tremendous adversity that they may again actively participate in our campaign for Light. We have another that is trying to figure out how to possibly die with a little bit of dignity. What makes the difference? Could it be what we are doing when we come together? Why, with many on our rolls do we not get enough to open? What are we not doing that we should be that maybe we once were? I don’t have the answers that will work in all cases, but in the cases where positive things are happening I see Fraters coming together to work together to assist others, coming together to have fellowship and educational programs to increase the Light in their lives. I see Fraters looking forward to being a part of their Frater’s lives, and taking care of the shut-ins and Widows. I see more get togethers than just the one meeting a month when the bills get paid and the minutes get reviewed. What about a weekly breakfast or coffee, or an evening desert time to just fellowship and share topics of interest, times when it would be easy to bring a

7

Brother or a non-Mason who might be a good prospect to join your Commandery. Where these types of things are happening, I see Templary growing. Where these types of things are happening I see Templars serving others and executing their commissions they received in the 5th libation. I see Templars beginning to winterize and prepare for the harvest by reactivating the flame that brought us here and by assisting others to do the same. As fall progresses and winter approaches, as the days grow shorter and the temperatures drop, will you have done all you can to have increased the Light and assisted others in preparing for the future? I pray so. As your life twists and turns through the changing of the seasons, do not put aside who and what we are in the ensuing crazy workload. Remember that we, each of us, are soldiers of Christ, and it is our obligated duty to walk the walk each and every day so that all will know who we love and serve. Every day is a day available to bring someone to Christ and to Templary through Masonry by our actions and example. I look forward to seeing every one of you in His Service soon. Matthew 6:25-31. Companion Knights,

How quickly September rolled through and October is upon us already. Several Companion Knights assisted in the Chapter Degrees for the Grand Master’s Class on Saturday, September 22nd. Now others are studying for the Council Degrees and Commandery Orders to be conducted on December 15th at the Bremerton MC. Please check with MIC Alan Spreen for the Council and SK Richard Kovak for the Commandery Orders to offer your service. This month only Tahoma #197 has a meeting, that being held at the Centralia MC on October 27th. Let us hope for a very good turnout of the southwest members and maybe some visitors from Rainier and Kamiakin can make it. I was remiss in last month’s FOCUS for omitting our DB Joseph W. MacIntyre who was appointed a Herold General by our new Governor General MPDB Blaine H. Simon. Joe’s new title for introduction is Very Eminently Distinguish Brother. Our congratulations to Joe for an appointment well deserved and wish him many happy returns in his travels. Companion Knights, look well upon your college by giving it your time and talents. Inter-office Memorandum

To: Jimmy Norton, President

From: Ron Graham, Trustee

Date: September 14, 2018

Subject: Visit to Virginia Mason Memorial Hospital in Yakima and Children’s Village in Yakima.

Yesterday my wife, Kevin, and I conducted the Subject. To say we were treated like royalty would be an understatement. They knew not of our existence. We met Erin Black, CEO of The Memorial Foundation at 0930. The Foundation is the 501 (c) 3 organization charged with the fund-raising for the hospital and its concordant organizations such as Children’s Village. There will be more reporting on Children’s Village later in this report. Erin first conducted us to Pediatrics and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit where we were met by Jessalyn Jones, RN, BNS, and Nurse Manager of the Unit. Jessalynn conducted us on a tour of their facility explaining the different levels of care and the devices and equipment used to facilitate the care. Jessalynn explained the hospital has a device which is used to detect heart anomalies in patients that requires different sized attachments for adults, teens, children and infants. They do not have the attachment that is required for infants and they are attempting to generate funds to purchase this. I asked Jessalynn to write-up an explanation of the attachment, what it does and its cost and email the same to me. When it arrives I will email it to you for your further action. The NICU is an impressive facility. For training they have a computerized infant that can display various unhealthy conditions that is responsive to administrations and treatments conducted by the trainees. Both doctors and nurses are required to re-qualify on this device several times annually. Its program is updated frequently to include other maladies. After the training they conduct debriefings to discuss how they might improve their ministrations. Erin assured me she would give our information to parents of infants who have heart requirements so we might assist them. Our next stop was the Children’s Village 3801 Kern Rd, Yakima. We were met by Mary Lynne Brewington who is an employee of The Memorial Foundation which covers Children’s Village under their blanket 501(c)3. Children’s Village has started the proceedings to become a stand alone 501(c)3 organization. When this is chartered Erin Black will be the President of the Board of Directors. The Village has been in existence for 20 years. The Village was built by the Foundation, contributors’ funding and volunteers. It is a one-stop pediatric clinic for children with any medical or dental need, including heart abnormalities. They have a staff cardiologist. The décor of the building is in themes all for the interests of children. They treat most physical and mental disorders, including

Page 12: FFOOCCUUSS - York Rite · REC Steven Tiner General Grand King REC Tiko Foley General Grand Scribe REC Roderick Anderson General Grand Treasurer REC Larry Gray (PGGHP) General Grand

12

rehabilitation with an exercise room and exercise pool. They also have sibling care facilities during the patient’s appointment to assure no outside interruptions. Both Ms. Brewington and the cardiologist assured they would give any parents in need of our assistance my contact information. This should take care of any HIPPA requirements. We spent +/- 3 hours at these two facilities.

October 2018

York Rite Life Memorial Foundation

The York Rite Life Membership Memorial Foundation - YRLMMF - was created by the three grand bodies in November 1986. Chapters, Councils and Commanderies with existing individual life membership funds had the option of turning their funds over to YRLMMF for management. YRLMMF uses a professional investment firm to hold and oversee the pooled life membership contributions. Annual distribution of investment income is made in proportion to the dollars invested by each group not by their membership numbers. Each grand body elects three trustees and the grand presiding officer serves ex officio as a trustee. The major challenge facing the member groups of YRLMMF (and most Masonic life membership funds) stems from the very low dollar amount by which a life membership may be purchased. By way of example, the Grand Chapter Code provides that a life membership may be purchased for a minimum of $150. Chapters may, if they wish, set a higher figure than the minimum but some participant groups still offer life memberships for the bare minimum amount. The average annual return of the stock market over the long term is roughly seven percent. So the distribution to chapters that offer low cost life memberships won’t even cover the annual per capita tax and will be less than what dues paying members are contributing to the upkeep of their group. New contributions for life memberships can be mailed to: York Rite Life Membership Memorial Foundation David Flood, Secretary PO Box 23322 Seattle, WA 98102-0622 (Please use the Zip + four)

A gentle reminder to all York Rite Masons that while the Fraternal aspect of our great organizations is superior, we must never forget the Business Aspects that allow us to survive in the 21st Century. This article is designed to inform you of some of the more important aspects of the Business of Masonry. The business staff of the Chapters, Councils and Commanderys consists of the Secretary, Registrar, Recorder and the Treasurer. This also applies to the Grand Chapter, Grand Council and the Grand Commandery. First, you must understand that the taking and posting of the minutes is the most visible of the Secretary’s job, it is the least time consuming. The behind the scenes roles of the Secretary consumes hours and is little seen. Such things as receiving and answering the various communications, receiving the moneys due and assuring that current dues cards are transmitted, while less visible require an immense amount of time. Preparation of the budget in conjunction with the “man-in-the-east”, the Treasurer and the Committee. The Secretary is typically the first person contacted when there is a question (generally has the answer). Managing the office, which is generally in the Secretary’s home and keeping the significant other happy about the mess required more than a “yes dear”. The Secretary is the front line person for all communications with the “the outside world”. A simple look at the WEB page will tell you why. The second arm of the business staff is the Treasurer. I maintain that every Masonic Body needs a Treasurer and we should never have a Secretary/Treasurer. One of the fundamentals of good financial management is the person who receives the money is not the person who signs the checks and the person who signs the check is not the person who balances the check book. By its very nature that requires three people, but it should always be more than one. Your group should establish who has access to the financial accounts of your body. That should be established in writing. It should always be the Treasurer, the Secretary and the “companion-in-the east” and possibly even the number two in the Fraternal line. You should demand a Treasurer’s report at you monthly (or periodic) meeting. You should

Page 19: FFOOCCUUSS - York Rite · REC Steven Tiner General Grand King REC Tiko Foley General Grand Scribe REC Roderick Anderson General Grand Treasurer REC Larry Gray (PGGHP) General Grand

19

demand to “see” the budget. You should demand a balanced budget and even insist on voting on approval of the budget. Our Masonic bodies are 501 c(10) bodies as established by the Internal Revenue Service. You do not pay taxes on related income, but may be required to pay taxes on unrelated income. (Ask yourself, is that raffle related to the fraternal business of your organization and are you in compliance with the Washington State criteria for such activities). Your body is required to file and Information return with the IRS (990N, 990EZ or 990, depending on gross income and total assets). This filing is due on the 15th day of the 5th month following the close of your fiscal year. Not all fiscal years end on December 31st. Ask your Treasurer when your fiscal year closes. Failure to file can and will cause loss of the 501 c(10) and this has been the requirement since 2011. Ask the question of your Treasurer. All the above is required. Who is responsible? I maintain the man-in-the east is responsible. Help protect you Secretary and Treasurer. Assure that an AUDIT is done each year. The Audit should be of ALL funds and to see that all required Administrative functions are being done in a timely matter. You cannot do a GOOD audit until you understand what is required. Washington Masonic Charities

Children’s Programs, Masonic Outreach Services, Masonic Library & Museum Our Mission: Washington Masonic Charities invests in youth and education, provides comfort and support for seniors and those in need, and preserves and shares the Masonic Heritage of Washington State.

Masonic Outreach Services

Masons caring for Masons, their wives, and widows as they age has been a long and important tradition of Freemasonry. WMC’s Masonic Outreach Services program replaced the Masonic Retirement Center of Washington. In October of 2014 children’s programs and the Library & Museum merged with Masonic Outreach Services and formed Washington Masonic Charities. New staff joined WMC to provide positive energy for an effective, and relevant service that meets the needs of the Masonic community. Masonic Outreach Services Program Purpose The Masonic Outreach Services’ purpose is to help individuals stay at home as long as they can by providing information and support. When the time comes, staff are available to help individuals find the right path to make the transition into a higher level of care, and to provide limited financial assistance through our emergency needs service. Services Provided

• Information & Referral – staff are available to assist individuals in identifying resources available to them in their community including care providers, housing options, support groups, nutrition and more.

• Assessments – Staff can visit individuals to assess their physical, financial, and social needs to make

recommendations.

• Care Planning & Home Visits – Based on assessment, staff will prepare recommendations for

individuals and assist in connecting them with services. When possible, our staff will visit people in

their homes on a regular basis.

• Financial Benefits Application Assistance – Staff can assist in the preparation of benefits and

entitlement applications for qualified individuals.

• Emergency Needs – Washington Masonic Charities can assist with one time emergency needs

requests. We do this in coordination with their local lodge and the Grand Lodge.

Services are provided at no cost, but we do suggest a donation for assessment & evaluation, care planning,

and benefits assistance services.

What Happened to the Masonic Retirement Center?

The Masonic Retirement Center of Washington (MRC) has been closed to residents for several years.

Changes in building codes, costs for construction to meet those new requirements, and ongoing operational

costs led the Grand Lodge of Washington to make the decision to close the facility. The MRC is owned by the

Grand Lodge. The disposition of proceeds from any future sale of the MRC will be decided upon by the Grand

Lodge.
