Grand High Priest’s Message

Greetings Companions,

The NEW YEAR has arrived and your Grand Chapter Annual Convocation is but five months away. Your Chapter Officers are at work with Chapter activities and your Grand Chapter Officers are likewise busy coordinating with the Grand Council and Grand Commandery officers in preparation for the 2019 Grand Session which will again be at the Little Creek Casino in Shelton on Friday and Saturday May 10th and 11th. All Resolutions to be considered by the Grand Chapter must be received by the Grand Secretary no later than February 1st. Resolutions can be amended up to 30 days prior to the Annual Convocation of Grand Chapter. To comply with the resolution deadline, the Grand Chapter Code Committee will shortly submit to the Grand Secretary a resolution with the latest revision of the Grand Chapter Code attached. The Committee will accept suggestions for revision up to February 28th and soon thereafter will submit the final code revision to the Grand Secretary. The final code revision will be voted on in it entirety with no floor amendments permitted. I encourage any past or present Chapter High Priest to consider filing for the office of Grand Scribe by the deadline date February 1st. Your Grand Chapter depends on a strong line of succession and the office of Grand Scribe is its foundation. Present elected Grand Officers should also inform the Grand Secretary of their availability for office by that date but a formal filing of intent is not needed.

Illustrious Grand Master’s Message

Greetings Companions: I hope you all had an enjoyable Holiday Season with your families. Now it’s 2019 and time to resume our labors in the quarries. Some Council Installations of Officers for 2019 have already occurred and some are coming in January. I wish to remind all Council Recorders to notify the Focus Editor, RPC Bryan Bechler, of the newly installed Illustrious Masters and Recorders (name, phone number, email) so that the information in the Focus is correct. At my Official Visits, I am emphasizing several goals which are dear to my heart. Councils are encouraged to have educational programs at each meeting as the lessons of our degrees contain allegories and symbols with profound meanings. Freemasonry is superior to other fraternal and social orders in the lessons taught in the degrees and orders. The deeper meanings of the symbolism and philosophy of Freemasonry cannot be adequately covered in the degree presentation. To learn the lessons of Freemasonry requires much study. For this reason, the York Rite Sovereign College of North America has developed a Companion Adept of the Temple program to aid interested Companions in learning the deeper meanings of Freemasonry. I encourage all Companions to take advantage of this, and for this purpose I have requested the Focus editor to include the enrollment form in the Focus. I am also encouraging communication with all members so that none will feel left out and forgotten even if for various reasons they are unable to attend and participate, and that includes those who are not electronically connected. I encourage Councils to consider the various awards available which are listed in the Master of Arch Handbook, available on the Grand Council website. Although not yet incorporated, I also encourage the Illustrious Masters to consider the Ish Sodi award. This award is designed to recognize a Companion who has been particularly helpful to the Illustrious Master in assisting him and in providing advice when requested. It is accompanied by a very nice medal and certificate. I would very much like to improve communications between jurisdictions with the goal of learning what programs other jurisdictions have developed which may be of interest to us. The best way to accomplish this, I believe, is through Grand Representatives appointed to and from the Washington jurisdiction. Grand Representatives near other jurisdictions are appointed by this Jurisdiction based on recommendations of the other jurisdictions. Grand

Representatives near this jurisdiction are appointed by other jurisdictions based on recommendations from this Jurisdiction. In reviewing the records we have been able to find, it appears that some appointments are very old and appointees may even be deceased, and there are gaps in coverage between jurisdictions. Therefore, we will be including the best list we have come up with in the preprinted packet for the Grand Assembly, so that those wishing to be Grand Representatives can indicate their desires with the Grand Recorder. Finally, I encourage each Companion to become familiar with the great strides being made by the Cryptic Masons Medical Research Foundation (www.cmmrf.org). The progress being made by the researchers supported by this Foundation has been truly impressive. I encourage donations to support this research to the extent that is within your means. We wish you and yours the very best in the coming year. Alan T. Spreen Most Illustrious Grand Master

Grand Commander’s Message

Greetings Sir Knights! I hope you and yours all had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Celebration! How were your obligatory Christmas Observances? Did they do honor to our Lord and Savior in celebration of his birth? What might you think of doing differently for this event next year? What about joining with another Commandery or two to increase your numbers and broaden the fraternal light and love of our celebrations? Please forward to the Grand Recorder the details of your 2018 Christmas Observances so we can keep a record of what we have done and what we might think of doing in the future. Thank you. Another New Year! New Years Resolutions…. Oh yeah. What are yours, and what are your Commander’s? A suggestion or two if I might. First and foremost, resolve to make our Lord a larger part of your life this coming year. Get closer to him and then share Him and his message with all you come into contact with that they too may know the blessings possible only through Christ and His Love. Secondly, get together in your Commandery and figure out a plan for the future that will allow you to enhance your operations, make your meetings more fun and educational, and that will help you grow your numbers. Third, resolve to reach out to every member of your Commandery that has not been around for a while and find out why they have been missing. Invite them back, get them involved again, grow by reactivating existing members. Don’t let anyone be forgotten in the drive to be active Soldiers of Christ! Remember: make new Templars, but keep the old, for some are silver, but the others are gold. Oh, and a tip. Eminent Commanders, at the beginning of this Templar year, the Grand Code and my Membership Committee assignments tasked you to assign a member of your Commandery to be a part of the Membership Committee which is headed by our Grand Generalissimo, SK Richard Kovak. Why the tip you might ask? Well, Grand Encampment is making it a point to connect with and monitor the activities of all the Grand Commandery Membership Committees throughout their jurisdiction. The Grand Captain General of Grand Encampment has begun the process, and we in the Grand Commandery of Washington do not want to be found wanting. Let’s see if we can have positive things to report! Another final reminder: If you want the Grand Commander or another member of the Grand Commandery Leadership team to install your Commandery, you must ask for that to be done. Your installations are not all on the calendar so if we are not invited, we will not necessarily be

Page 8: FFOOCCUUSS - York Rite · MEC Andrew Olson Grand High Priest REC Patrick Stanton Deputy Grand High Priest REC Robert Monroe Grand King REC Kyle Evenstad REC Ivan “Merle” Iverson

8

able to be with you. I and we are happy to assist in doing this for you, but you need to ask for our involvement. And speaking of installations, several important deadlines loom. 1 February is the deadline to file for the elected positions in the Grand Commandery Line. Do you have what it takes to be a part of our Elected Leadership Team? 15 February is the deadline to file resolutions for consideration by our Grand Commandery at our upcoming Grand Sessions. Registration is, or will shortly be, on line for our Grand Sessions in May. Register early and get your hotel reservations made so you can get the sessions rate. As we saw last year when the number of rooms we reserved for are taken, so is the rate and they are not willing to add to the number we forecast for. Don’t get caught and have to pay more or look elsewhere for a room by delaying your booking. Finally my Fraters, my bride Natalie and I wish you and yours the Light, Love, Peace and Prosperity of our Heavenly Father and His Son, our Savior throughout the year 2019. As your life continues to twist and turn through the changing of the seasons, do not put aside who and what we are in the ensuing crazy workload. Remember that we, each of us, are soldiers of Christ, and it is our obligated duty to walk the walk each and every day so that all will know who we love and serve. Every day is a day available to bring someone to Christ and to Templary through Masonry by our actions and example. I look forward to seeing every one of you in His Service soon and may Peace be with you always! Mark 14:31.

York Rite College Grand Governor’s Message

Greetings Companion Knights— HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

Companion Knights, the Year 2018 really went out with a roar in December. Very strong damaging winds over western Washington, and an abundance of snow in the mountains that the skiers love and the summer reservoirs relish. But the unique tornado near Port Orchard is one for the record books. I have not heard if any York Rite members were affected by it. Hopefully, no news is good news.

Did you make any New Year’s Resolutions that you will really keep and

they become the new you? The wisdom of age says unless you really bought into them, you will not keep them. That is true with the intentions to support your York Rite Bodies (YRB) more. But one thing that will help you keep this resolution is to get involved in your YRB and accept a part and responsibility that is positive. I have visited several of our YRB lately and some do not have enough to open. So good fellowship rises from those that made it, but no quarry work for the temple. Brothers, Companions, Sir Knights do make a solid resolution to start going to the meetings and become a part of YOUR organizations.

God Bless……..

Greetings Companions from your Royal Arch Masons Children’s Heart Foundation

New Year’s is just a couple clock ticks away so now it’s time to give thanks and celebrate achievements in 2018 and get excited for 2019. Thanks to our Grand Chapter officers and committee members for undertaking the challenges of updating our code to build a stronger future. Thanks to our dedicated trustees for their continued work in their areas and for bringing light to their Chapters and their membership. 2019 will continue to see changes to your RAMCHF. A streamlined, relevant and easy to understand application for assistance is getting closer to being completed. Financial information will continue to be provided for review by all to keep you informed on what your foundation is doing will always be a priority. Your RAMCHF provided over $160,000.00 in donations and case assistance in 2018. Seattle Children’s – Mary Bridge – Providence Sacred Heart – Children’s Village – Virginia Mason—these facilities are pioneers in pediatric heart/child care and we are proud to be able to assist in their endeavors. The foundation would like to welcome back MEC Fred Noyes. He was nominated and approved by the Trustees to fill a vacancy and has accepted and “is excited to continue to make a difference in children’s lives”. As 2018 ends it’s never too late to make a tax-deductible donation so please remember and consider your RAMCHF. You do make a difference !!!! As always please feel free to ask questions as the more you know the better informed all of our companions will be. YORK RITE LIFE MEMBERSHIP MEMORIAL FOUNDATION

So far in 2018 York Rite bodies have purchased 15 new life memberships. YRLMMF assets are conservatively invested for long-term preservation of capital as well as current income. Returns on YRLMMF’s investments of course vary from year to year. However, even in a good year in the stock market, the amount invested for most life memberships won’t generate enough income to cover a life member’s dues or per capita payment. As York Rite bodies elect officers and plan for the coming year perhaps they will want to take a fresh look at what they are asking for life memberships. The Grand Codes of Chapter, Council and Commandery set minimum amounts for life memberships. Some individual chapters and councils have set higher amounts in their bylaws. Royal Arch Code, Section 166 - minimum $150 Grand Council Code, Section 4.3061 BL - minimum $200 Grand Commandery Code, Section 12.0 sets out a sliding scale based on age. Application forms for life membership can be found under the Forms tab on the website of all three grand bodies. New contributions for life memberships can be mailed to: York Rite Life Membership Memorial Foundation David Flood, Secretary POB 23322 Seattle, WA 98102-0622 (Please use the Zip + four)

Greetings Companions,

We hope you had a Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Years! The Park Board still needs your help! It is time for our yearly renewal of the park caretakers’ position. If you know someone who is interested in this position, please have them contact the Royal Arch Park board at [email protected]. In our February meeting we will interview and hire our park caretaker for the one-year contract. As we review our projects for 2019, we are getting excited for the weather to warm up so we can start the projects. Tables need to be replaced and repaired, limbs and branches need to be picked up from the wind storms and brush needs to be cleared. The Park board members walk the park after the monthly board meeting and are excited and proud to be a part of this great park. There is a lot that needs to be done, but it is well worth it. We would love to see some of the other Royal Arch Chapters come out and see the park. With your help and donations to the park we will be able to make even more improvements. I hope to see you at the park, Glenn Butler Secretary Royal Arch Park Board

A gentle reminder to all York Rite Masons that while the Fraternal aspect of our great organizations is superior, we must never forget the Business Aspects that allow us to survive in the 21st Century. This article is designed to inform you of some of the more important aspects of the Business of Masonry. The business staff of the Chapters, Councils and Commanderys consists of the Secretary, Registrar, Recorder and the Treasurer. This also applies to the Grand Chapter, Grand Council and the Grand Commandery. First, you must understand that the taking and posting of the minutes is the most visible of the Secretary’s job, it is the least time consuming. The behind the scenes roles of the Secretary consumes hours and is little seen. Such things as receiving and answering the various communications, receiving the moneys due and assuring that current dues cards are transmitted, while less visible require an immense amount of time. Preparation of the budget in conjunction with the “man-in-the-east”, the Treasurer and the Committee. The Secretary is typically the first person contacted when there is a question (generally has the answer). Managing the office, which is generally in the Secretary’s home and keeping the significant other happy about the mess required more than a “yes dear”. The Secretary is the front line person for all communications with the “the outside world”. A simple look at the WEB page will tell you why. The second arm of the business staff is the Treasurer. I maintain that every Masonic Body needs a Treasurer and we should never have a Secretary/Treasurer. One of the fundamentals of good financial management is the person who receives the money is not the person who signs the checks and the person who signs the check is not the person who balances the check book. By its very nature that requires three people, but it should always be more than one. Your group should establish who has access to the financial accounts of your body. That should be established in writing. It should always be the Treasurer, the Secretary and the “companion-in-the east” and possibly even the number two in the Fraternal line. You should demand a Treasurer’s report at you monthly (or periodic) meeting. You should

Page 17: FFOOCCUUSS - York Rite · MEC Andrew Olson Grand High Priest REC Patrick Stanton Deputy Grand High Priest REC Robert Monroe Grand King REC Kyle Evenstad REC Ivan “Merle” Iverson

17

demand to “see” the budget. You should demand a balanced budget and even insist on voting on approval of the budget. Our Masonic bodies are 501 c(10) bodies as established by the Internal Revenue Service. You do not pay taxes on related income, but may be required to pay taxes on unrelated income. (Ask yourself, is that raffle related to the fraternal business of your organization and are you in compliance with the Washington State criteria for such activities). Your body is required to file and Information return with the IRS (990N, 990EZ or 990, depending on gross income and total assets). This filing is due on the 15th day of the 5th month following the close of your fiscal year. Not all fiscal years end on December 31st. Ask your Treasurer when your fiscal year closes. Failure to file can and will cause loss of the 501 c(10) and this has been the requirement since 2011. Ask the question of your Treasurer. All the above is required. Who is responsible? I maintain the man-in-the east is responsible. Help protect you Secretary and Treasurer. Assure that an AUDIT is done each year. The Audit should be of ALL funds and to see that all required Administrative functions are being done in a timely matter. You cannot do a GOOD audit until you understand what is required. REC Merle Iverson, Grand Treasurer

Washington Masonic Charities

Children’s Programs, Masonic Outreach Services, Masonic Library & Museum Our Mission: Washington Masonic Charities invests in youth and education, provides comfort and support for seniors and those in need, and preserves and shares the Masonic Heritage of Washington State.

Masonic Outreach Services

Masons caring for Masons, their wives, and widows as they age has been a long and important tradition of Freemasonry. WMC’s Masonic Outreach Services program replaced the Masonic Retirement Center of Washington. In October of 2014 children’s programs and the Library & Museum merged with Masonic Outreach Services and formed Washington Masonic Charities. New staff joined WMC to provide positive energy for an effective, and relevant service that meets the needs of the Masonic community. Masonic Outreach Services Program Purpose The Masonic Outreach Services’ purpose is to help individuals stay at home as long as they can by providing information and support. When the time comes, staff are available to help individuals find the right path to make the transition into a higher level of care, and to provide limited financial assistance through our emergency needs service. Services Provided

• Information & Referral – staff are available to assist individuals in identifying resources available to them in their community including care providers, housing options, support groups, nutrition and more.

• Assessments – Staff can visit individuals to assess their physical, financial, and social needs to make

recommendations.

• Care Planning & Home Visits – Based on assessment, staff will prepare recommendations for

individuals and assist in connecting them with services. When possible, our staff will visit people in

their homes on a regular basis.

• Financial Benefits Application Assistance – Staff can assist in the preparation of benefits and

entitlement applications for qualified individuals.

• Emergency Needs – Washington Masonic Charities can assist with one time emergency needs

requests. We do this in coordination with their local lodge and the Grand Lodge.

Services are provided at no cost, but we do suggest a donation for assessment & evaluation, care planning,

and benefits assistance services.

What Happened to the Masonic Retirement Center?

The Masonic Retirement Center of Washington (MRC) has been closed to residents for several years.

Changes in building codes, costs for construction to meet those new requirements, and ongoing operational

costs led the Grand Lodge of Washington to make the decision to close the facility. The MRC is owned by the

Grand Lodge. The disposition of proceeds from any future sale of the MRC will be decided upon by the Grand

Lodge.
