Footprints for Learning Academy DRESS AND GROOMING CODE Our dress code has been developed to reflect and enforce an acceptable standard of dress and grooming. It is designed to reflect decency, good taste, and the normal standard of the community in which we live. It is our intention to create a positive academic climate by reducing distractions for students and creating a sense of community and self -discipline among students. Any dress, hairstyle or grooming that is considered contrary to good hygiene, distractive or disruptive in appearance, or detrimental to the educational environment or the public image of the school, will not be permitted. The administration has the right to determine if attire, grooming and/or appearance is inappropriate for school or school activities. REQUIREMENTS The following regulations apply at school and at any school activities. 1. All students are to arrive at school dressed and groomed appropriately. 2. All clothing and hairstyles are to be plain, clean and well maintained. Students are expected to be clean and well groomed. 3. All clothing is to be modest, conservative, respectful and non-controversial. Buttons shall be buttoned (on shirts at least to cover cleavage and chest) and zippers shall be zipped. 4. All students must wear or bring appropriate winter clothing to enable outdoor play in all types of weather. 5. All footwear and outdoor wear must be labeled with the student’s name. 6. Tattoos shall not be visible and shall be discouraged all together. 7. Only one set of conservative earrings (pierced or otherwise) may be worn (by girls only) with one earring for each ear lobe. They must be subtle and non-distracting. No other visible piercings are allowed. All other earrings are to be left out while on school property or at a school event. Boys may not wear earrings. 8. Clothing, jewellery, skin or anything else shall not display designs, mottoes, symbols, words or anything else conveying messages that are crude, vulgar, disrespectful, profane, violent (including skulls, death or any form of physical and/or emotional violence), sexually implicit or explicit or that reference items that are illegal in general or specifically for underage students, such as tobacco, alcohol, illegal drugs, or that are connected with any secret organization or gang or any famous individuals or groups or is in any way controversial is forbidden. 9. Students shall not wear sunglasses, hats, caps or hoods in the classroom. These are for the outdoors and these along with other outdoor clothing meant for inclement weather shall be stored in lockers during the school day. 10. Undergarments must not be visible. Therefore pants or bottoms shall neither sag nor show rear cleavage. Spaghetti straps or strapless tops are prohibited; shorts and skirts must be no shorter than the knee; shirts and tops are to cover the

  • shoulder (minimum of a cap sleeve), midriff and cleavage. Tight fitting or

    transparent clothing is not permitted. Girls shall wear modesty shorts when they

    wear a dress or skirt to enable them to play uninhibited on the playground etc.

    11. Night attire (pyjamas, housecoats, slippers etc.) is not acceptable.

    12. Scarves may not be worn as they pose a safety risk. In inclement weather, neck

    warmers are encouraged.

    13. Footwear will be appropriate for school activities, well fitting and comfortable.

    Heels (girls only) will not exceed 2 in height. Beach footwear (flip-flops) is

    prohibited.

    14. Members of the school community are to keep hair styles conservative while on school

    property or attending school events. Only natural hair colors are permitted.

    15. Make up (girls only - grade 7 and up) must be subtle.

    16. All jewellery must be subtle.

    17. Acceptable clothing items for girls:

    Shirts, T-shirts, skirts, shorts, jumpers, dresses, pants, shorts, modesty shorts, sweaters.

    18. Acceptable clothing items for boys:

    Shirts, T-shirts, shorts, pants, sweaters. Boys may not wear skirts, dresses, jumpers or

    other clothing and accessories specifically intended for girls.

    Any disputes will be sensitively resolved by the Administration. Appropriate action will

    be taken when the above Dress and Grooming Code is not followed.

    We are still seriously considering the implementation of school uniforms. Until then, the DRESS AND GROOMING CODE will serve as our dress requirements at

    Footprints for Learning Academy.
