Fireworks action campaign takes offTANIA SANDBERG>>[email protected]

THE Fireworks Action Cam-paign Toti (Fact) held a meet-ing on Thursday, calling for

public intervention in addressingfireworks.

“Instead of improving, the fire-works situation was worse this sea-son,” says Fact chairperson LeeLewis.

As a result Fact asked for inputfromthepubliconhowtoaddresstheproblem in the future. Council wasunable to attend the meeting due toa full council meeting. The firebrigadeandtheexplosivesunitwerealso asked to attend, but did not.

Lewis says themajority of peopleusing fireworks were not Toti resi-dents, but visitors.

“Next season Fact plans to placeadvertisements in publications holi-daymakers have access to, to sendouta firmmessage that there isa lawagainst the use of fireworks locally,”she says.

Louise Marais stated: “The factsare, fireworks are illegal, but SAPSdoes not have the manpower to en-force this law.Wecancall on themu-nicipality to enforce the law at flatsand holiday accommodation. Holi-daymakers must follow our laws.

“Anything illegal can be enforcedby the municipality. We can requestthe municipality to put a notice ontheirratesandtaxesaccountsthatallbig bangs are illegal and that otherfireworksareonlyallowed tobe soldone week prior to Diwali and oneweek prior to New Year’s celebra-tions.”

The issue of why people are buy-ing fireworks if it is illegal was dis-cussed and it was suggested that thepublic reports shops selling fire-works in the illegalwindowperiodtoFact.

“We launched a communityforum last July and are in process ofregistration. Fact and Toti CrimeForumare part thereof. Recentlywealso joined forces with My SapphireCommunity. The idea is to bring

everybody on board, and speak asone voice on mutual issues whendealing with the police, the munici-pality or other government organi-sations. The community is invited tojoin in,” Marais says.

“I promised the explosives unittheywon’t have a vigilante group on

itshandsandweneedtokeeptothat. In December the Toti Crime Forumhadstreetandbeachpatrolswiththebacking of ET Security, which wasfunded by local businesses. Thisworkedverywellincombatingcrimeand should be expanded upon in thefuture,” Marais stated.

Technical faultat Koeberg toblame for latestload sheddingFEVER REPORTERPOWER cuts continue as maintenanceproblems prevail at Eskom. The utility re-ported on Monday that the power grid waspressurised due to a unit with a technicalfault being taken out of service at Koeberg.

According to the South African PressAssociation spokesman Khulu Phasiwesaid the unit, which produces 900MW, isstill down. Phasiwe reportedly said thatEskom is “trying to sync it into service, itwill take a few days but it should be onlinesoon”. Stage one load shedding was imple-mented from 10am to 10pm and is likelyto continue and consumers are remindedto use electricity sparingly. Stage one al-lows for up to 1 000MW of the nationalload to be cut, stage two for up to2 000MW, and stage three for up to4 000MW.

Bingo terminals in malls process stopped

FEVER REPORTERFINANCE MEC Belinda Scott launched an urgent appli-cation at the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Fridayto overturn the decision to grant licences to installelectronic bingo terminals in shopping centres. Shewants the decision to grant them licences to installthe machines in shopping centres overturned.

BrandonPillayis partof aconsortiumthathaspeti-tioned against the installation of the bingo terminals.

He said they strongly support the call by the KZNprovincial government, the MEC and the premier forlaunching this interdict against the board. Pillay addedthat there have been thousands of petitions, whichhave been ignored by the board.

“They clearly had a preconceived decision when

they granted the licence. It was granted on the day their termof office came to end. They also had a meeting on camera whichis not procedure and asked a legal person not to attend themeeting. The premier got word of it on 20 January,” Pillay said.

He said he is thankful the board were ending their term andshould not be re-elected. Pillay said that Galleria, Gateway andPavilion have signage up already, but no licences has been is-sued.

“The premier and the MEC stopped the process just in time,”he adds.

Petrol drops by93 cents a litreFEVER REPORTERONWednesday the retail prices of bothgrades of petrol dropped 93c a litre asannounced by theDepartment of Ener-gy on Friday. The latest drop is the big-gest with a decrease of 123c and 127cfor 95 and 93 grades in January.

Coastal petrol userswill payR9.85 alitre for 93 petrol and R9.90 a litre for95 petrol, while inland users will payR10.09 a litre for 93 petrol and R10.31a litre for 95.

South Africa produced 23 571 mil-lionlitresofliquidfuelproductsin2005,according to SAPIA.

“About 36% of the demand ismet bysynthetic fuels [synfuels], which areproduced locally, largely from coal andfrom natural gas. Products refined lo-cally from imported crude oil meet theremaining 64%” the department of en-ergy reports.

The petrol price in South Africa islinkedtothepriceofcrudeoil ininterna-tionalmarketsand isquoted inU.S.dol-lars per barrel.

According to the department inter-national petrol prices are essentiallydriven by supply anddemand for prod-uct inaparticularmarket.Crudeoilpri-ces combined with the rand-dollar ex-change rate therefore have amajor im-pact on petrol prices.

“A crude-oil refinery’s biggest inputcost is crude oil. In order for a refinerytomake a profit, the price for the prod-uctmanufactured from crude oil has tobehigherthanthatofthecrudeoilprice. When crude oil prices increase — asthey have over the past months — thepetrol price has to increase so thatcrude-oil refineries are able to covertheir costs,” the department stated.

The fuel price changes are, petrol93c/l decrease (both grades), diesel:102c/ldecrease(0.05%and0.005%sul-phur), IP wholesale: 102c/l decrease,SMNRPforIP,136c/ldecreaseandmax-imumLPGas retail price, a 150c/kg de-crease.

The Pregnancy Resource Centre(PRC) was her first non-profit initia-tive, a revolutionary idea at the timein early nineties. The centre, startedin her home, provided a shelter forpregnant mothers.

Oncologist’s prospective of cancerCANCER can be divided intotwo broad categories — pre-vention and treatment.

Of course, prevention isbetter than cure, and I hope amoustache in November willurgemenover40tohavetheirprostate checked. I hope thatpinkwill encouragewomenintheir fiftiestohaveabreastex-amination andmammogram.

As an oncologist, most ofmy time is spent fighting this“EmperorofAllMaladies”*.Inmy opinion, the most impor-tant thing one can do to helpcancer patients is donateblood. There’s not aweek thatgoesbythatoneofmypatientsdoesn’t need a blood transfu-sion. A donation can save alife. Visit www.sanbs.org.za

When it comes to cancertreatment:

• Ignore this phrase “I’msorry. There’s nothing more Icando.”There’salwayssome-thing that can be done, even ifit’s only proper pain control, nutritional support or a hug.

• If you feel “there’s some-thing not right in your body”don’t settle for a rushedmedi-calopinionwithout further in-vestigations to back it up. Youhavetherighttoanotheropin-ion.

• It is as important to hon-our patients’ lives as to at-tempt a “cure”. Find an onco-logy practice you can trust. You are not just a number or a

diagnosis.Happy World Cancer Day

Blind speaker motivates 21 Club members

TANIA SANDBERG>>[email protected]

STORM Schwartz, blind since the age of 17, addressedthe 21 Club at a lunch at Lord’s and Legends onWednesday, 28 January and 86 women attended theevent.

Schwartz was born in Johannesburg and attendedRehoboth Christian School and later Browns Schoolin Durban. At the age of 17, he experienced problemswith his eyesight and an ophthalmologist discoveredhe has a rare strain of an irreversible eye disease andhe became blind.

“It was my goal to get matric. I got a Job AccessWindows and Speech Computer (Jaw computer) andnotes from a teacher. I finished my matric and attend-edtheKZNBlindandDeafCollege,whereIlearntmoreabout my Jaw computer and how to use it properly.

“I studied a telephonic course and passed withthree distinctions. I volunteered at the SAPS to an-swer their phones, something I enjoyed doing.”

Schwartz says he keeps trying new things, starteda biltong shop from home and worked at an automa-tion shop.

“Unfortunately, I was retrenched. I have appliedfor other jobs and remain hopeful. I also completedbraille level one and two and got 87%. I play blindcricket, and I made the KwaZulu-Natal team.”

Schwartz believes having a goal is important.“One day somebody asked Hellen Keller what is

worse than being blind, she said, ‘To see and have novision’. My goal is to be the best motivational speaker, the best biltong maker and get back to being fit. Thejoy of the Lord is my strength.”

Schwartz’s grandfather Pastor Alan Symons sayshe has incredible hearing and an amazing memory.

“I think of him as being differently abled. I askedhim what he could do if he could see, and he said hewants to see the beach. His friend Tracey Smith, whois also visually impaired, would like to see colour.”

Smith lives in Gauteng, and hopes to relocate toAmanzimtoti. Smith is a braille instructor and quali-fiedasatrainerof trainers, anassessor andmoderatorand is registered as such with the ETDP Seta.

NGO cares forcats, kittensPRANAV DEEPLAL

CAT Walk Toti has been a service offeredto residents for three years. It is a pri-vately owned non-profit organisationthat rescues and feeds feral cats and kit-tens.

“The idea started when my daugh-ter’s cats were lost in transit to Limpopoon a stopover in Ladysmith. About 10months later they were found alive, butstarving,” Cat Walk Toti owner DayleRobinson says.

Robinson then decided it was hercalling to help cats. She is self-financedapart from one sponsor and residentswho deliver food every month.

Currently Robinson nurses 82 catsand kittens and feeds the cats at theAthlone Park Pick n Pay centre and atthe old Durban airport.

“The feral cats come from peopledumping them, or just leaving themwhen they move. The most importantthing is that owners do not sterilise theircats, this leads to unwanted kittens andpregnant mothers being dumped,” Rob-inson says.

She gets calls from the public askingher to help them with strays however, with finances being low she cannot as-sist all and asks the public to get in-volved.

Safety tipsfor tripsMANY road incidents could have been pre-vented if a few measures were in place. Thiscolumn gives you hints and tips which, ifused correctly, can prevent the heartachethat crime-related incidents bring.

Basic measures to take when driving toand from home.

• Before leaving on a trip advise a familymember, friend or colleague of the detailsof it. This should include time of departure, route, estimated time of arrival at destina-tion and how many occupants will be in thevehicle. Should there be any unseenchanges to your trip, advise the person.Make sure that this same person has yourcontact details, as well as a description ofyour vehicle.

• Prior to departure, scan your immedi-ate surroundings for suspicious vehicles, people or objects in the proximity of yourexit. This includes pieces of plastic tied togates and/or fences, used as target indica-tors. Once under way, remain vigilant andsurvey your immediate surroundings andremain alert to vehicles that may be fol-lowing you.

• If you have to stop at an intersection, remember to keep doors locked and win-dows closed. Maintain a distance of atleasthalfavehiclelengthbetweenyourve-hicle and the one in front. Should you no-tice suspicious people approaching yourvehicle, switch on your headlights and hootcontinuously to attract attention. Thissafety precaution has helped to thwartmany hijacking attempts, although it is not100% guaranteed.
