RATIONALE

The TRINIDAD & TOBAGO FISH FESTIVAL, is geared towards encouraging the National

Community to focus their attention on the fishing industry. This festival will not only heighten interest

and increase awareness of the ST PETER’S DAY CELEBRATION as an integral part of our Cultural

Heritage, but it will also bring to the forefront the individuals, groups and communities who contribute

meaningfully to the sustenance, development and continued growth of this sector.

The Fishing Sector and its stake holders play a key role in ensuring global food security. They are

stewards of the environment and they contribute meaningfully to the National Food Basket on a daily

basis. Increases in food prices and animal borne diseases worldwide have now created a growing

demand for fish as an alternative to Poultry and Dairy meats and products in the diet of many

households. Fishing also creates an avenue for generating income and it is a viable means of livelihood

for many persons of nationally.

Fish has many health benefits. It is a low-fat high quality source of protein. It is filled with

omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins such as D and B2 (riboflavin). Fish is rich in calcium and

phosphorus and a great source of minerals, such as iron, zinc, iodine, magnesium, and

potassium. These essential nutrients keep our heart and brain healthy. Eating fish regularly

helps to maintain a healthy heart by lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of sudden

death, heart attack, abnormal heart rhythms, and strokes. It aids in healthy brain function and

infant development of vision and nerves during pregnancy. It can also decrease the risk of

depression, ADHD, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and diabetes. It may prevent inflammation

and reduce the risk of arthritis.

For many years fish extracts for example, Shark Oil has provided medicinal relief to ailing

patients. Fish has great cultural importance in many communities globally, as it serves as a

symbol of their prosperity, culture, and heritage.

Yet for many years fishermen have been given little priority to their ply for recognition of the critical

role that they play in today’s society. In this regard, we view this initiative as paramount to our cause in

recognizing these stalwarts at the National level.

The comprehensive nature of this FESTIVAL will ensure that the government place it as top priority as

a tourism marketing tool that can lure foreign and regional visitors to our islands each year. According

to the Historic/Cultural Traveller (2003), approximately 41 percent of travellers attended a festival

and/or fair during their travel.

The FISH FESTIVAL ORGANISING COMMITTEE is of the view that this Festival has the

capacity to be included as a signature event on the National Calendar of Annual Cultural events in

Trinidad and Tobago, thereby propelling the fishing industry fast forward whereby more attention and

resources can be channelled towards the sustainable development of this sector.

This event can also create international and regional recognition as Trinidad and Tobago will be seen as

a catalyst and an emerging powerhouse in the dynamic expansion of the fishing industry.

Page 4: Festival proposal t&t fish festival,2013
