Warm Wishes for Happy Holidays!May your holiday season, as well as the coming year, bring you boundless love, joy, prosperity and peace. Wishing you and your loved ones very happy holidays!

From: Tom, Daryl, Rammi, Richard, Cherya, and Sam
The cats are at first suspicious and proud, reluctant to
allow an audience into their domain. In “The Naming
of Cats”, however, they begin to reveal who they are
and that cats have three different names: the one the
family uses daily, a more dignified name, and a secret name. It is
the contemplation of these secret names that keeps felines deep
in thought:
Victoria, a young white cat, dances to signal “The Invitation to
the Jellicle Ball”. Munkustrap, a large grey tabby, explains that the
Jellicle Cats meet once a year to rejoice. They are waiting for their
leader, the wise Old Deuteronomy, who will choose which of the
Jellicle Cats will journey tonight to the Heaviside layer to be reborn
into a new life.
And so begins our introduction to the cats. One by one they step
forward to audition for the role, to be chosen to make the special
journey to be reborn.
Jennyanydots, Rum Tum Tugger and Bustopher Jones are the first
of the cats introduced. Grizabella, The Glamour Cat, steps forward
but is shunned by the rest of the tribe despite being a Jellicle Cat.
She left the tribe years ago to explore the outside world and now
wants to return.
Suddenly a thunderous crash, followed by the sound of police
sirens and flashing red lights signals that the villainous Macavity is
on the loose! The cats scatter, leaving an empty space.
Distant giggles signal the entrance of Mungojerrie and
Rumpleteazer, a fun-loving, frolicking team of pranksters who are
always in trouble with the family with whom they live:
The entire tribe returns as their benevolent and wise old leader

Old Deuteronomy arrives. The cats adore and respect him. They
entertain him with a special show narrated by Munkustrap, The
Aweful Battle of the Pekes and the Pollicles together with the
Marching Song of the Pollicle Dogs:
Another crash from the villainous Macavity is heard, which sends
the cats scurrying. Old Deuteronomy soothes them as they come
back one by one. It is time for The Jellicle Ball, the great annual
dance in which all the cats celebrate.
Grizabella appears once more, wanting to rejoin her family and be a
part of the celebration. She is left to contemplate her “Memory” of
the time before she left the tribe. She stretches out her hand behind
her, hoping another cat will touch her. She is still not accepted and,
disappointed, slinks off into the night.
After the Jellicle Ball, the cats rest and contemplate “The Moments
of Happiness” before introducing more cats such as Gus the
Theatre Cat and Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat.
A third crash interrupts the celebration, and this time the villainous
Macavity appears. Two of his henchmen invade the proceedings
and kidnap Old Deuteronomy.
Macavity returns, disguised as Old Deuteronomy, but he is exposed
and battles with Munkustrap and the other male cats. Tired and
almost defeated, Macavity rigs an electrical explosion that puts
out all the lights, leaving the Jellicles in the dark. But they still
have to find Old Deuteronomy. The Rum Tum Tugger calls upon Mr.
Mistoffelees, the conjuring cat, to use his magical powers to bring
back their leader. Mistoffelees succeeds in reinstating the lights,
locating Old Deuteronomy and showing off his spectacular magic
tricks, including his infamous conjuring turn.
At last the time has come for Old Deuteronomy to make the Jellicle
Choice and decide which cat will be reborn into a new Jellicle life. At
that moment, Grizabella reappears. Again she recalls her “Memory”
of how things used to be. This time the cats accept her back into
the tribe and it is she who is chosen to journey to the Heaviside
Layer and be reborn.
The Jellicle Ball has come to a conclusion, but first Old Deuteronomy
instructs the human spectators in “The Addressing of Cats”:
So first, your memory I’ll jog,
And say: A CAT IS NOT A DOG.
A Cat’s entitled to expect
These evidences of respect.
And so in time you reach your aim,
And finally call him by his NAME…..
For all of their unique qualities and differences, he says, cats are
very much like you.

Going into my fourth show as Director/Choreographer and my twelfth
show as Choreographer for the Festival Place Players - my heart is
full of gratitude and inspiration. This evening’s performance is my
vision of “Cats” and I am grateful for an amazing, talented cast. I would like to
thank them all for sharing themselves along this journey with me. Their talent
ignites me and their passion warms me. Have an awesome show tonight!
It truly takes an amazing Artistic Team of dedicated and passionate people to
make a production of this magnitude come to life. Thank you to Cassie, Robbie,
Morgan, Buddy, and Lori. It has been a privilege working with all of you.
To Kelci Tookey, Make Up Designer/Assistant to the Choreographer, what
can I say, you’re an inspiration to all who get to know and work with you.
Thank you for all you do, “Love you to the moon and back”.
To James Odenbach, Lighting Design, a huge thank you for coming on to

To the Musical Artists whose music you will hear this evening, Thank you for
your wonderful playing in the orchestra tonight. To Keat Machtemes for your
fabulous accompanist during rehearsal and in the pit tonight. Your articulation
of the music made the cast and my job a wonderful experience.
To Michael Clark the Musical Director and Conductor, you taught me many
things, how to see the light at the end of tunnel when numbers seemed
long and the choreography was going on forever, to read and understand
the musical score, to be patient with the singers & dancers when I was
at my wits end, for showing the cast the way with such passion and
dedication to how they sounded. We would not have been here tonight
without you. I am truly grateful.
To Allene Hodgins, the Production Manager and Stage Manager, my good
friend. Who would have thought this adventure we started 8 years ago
would still have us loving every minute. We have laughed, cried, definitely
have had our differences, but we are a great team, thanks for sticking by
me. Your organization, dedication, and generosity towards this production
goes beyond words, Thank you for believing in my dreams.
To my husband Wayne and my family thank you for always supporting and
standing by me with no questions asked. Your love and support means
the world to me.
Thank you to the Festival Place Staff for all you do and Gavin Farmer for
having faith in my vision.
And to the audience, please enjoy tonight’s performance, sing along, laugh
and cry with us on your journey to the “Heavy Side Layer”
I leave you with this:
“Live with intention. Walk to the edge. Continue to Learn. Play with
abandon. Live with no regret. Appreciate your friends. Do what you Love.
Live as if this is all there is!”

THE HISTORY OF
ROCK N ROLLSTARS STRIPES
“I don’t care what people say, rock ‘n roll is here to stay!” This is a line from the 1958 hit by Danny and the Juniors and at the time no one could have guessed how prophetic this simple lyric would be! Join us for a jam-packed musical evening as we explore the origins of rock ‘n roll from its infancy, which saw jazz and gospel transform into the undeniably infectious sound that became known as rock ‘n roll. This All-American music review highlights it’s greatest pioneers - Chuck Berry, Elvis, the Doo-Wop groups of the 50’s, The Beach Boys and the R&B groups of the 60’s - they were America’s answer to the British Invasion, each generation influencing the next right up to the present day. Rock ‘n roll was born in the USA, and lives and thrives today!

Kelci has been performing all her life and been dancing since the age of two. She is currently instructing at Shelley’s Dance Company and enrolled in the RAD Teachers Training program. Kelci is excited to be involved in her 4th production but this time behind the scenes. She is thrilled to be a part of making “CATS” come to life.

Lori Weisgerber is proud to make her debut as an assistant stage manager. She comes to us with 17 years of dance training in tap, jazz and musical theatre. She would like to thank the theatre family for welcoming her and is thrilled to be playing behind the scenes.
SHELLEY TOOKEY (DIRECTOR)
Shelley Tookey is the Artistic Director and co-owner, along with her husband Wayne , of Shelley’s Dance Company in Edmonton for the past 45 years.
Shelley has choreographed and directed many musicals over the past 12 years. Musicals such as “White Christmas”, “Oliver”, “Kiss Me Kate”, Wizard of Oz”, “Annie Get Your Gun” “Crazy For You”, “Sound of Music”, just to name a few. “Cats” is one of Shelley’s favourite musicals and was a huge challenge, but with such a passionate cast and production team, and a lot of hard work, she believes that the artists in this show have all grown in so many ways.
It has been a privilege and a blessing to have been part of this production. Please sit back and enjoy!
ROBBIE TKACHYK (TECHNICAL DIRECTOR)
A graduate of the Grant MacEwan Theatre Production program, this is Robbie’s 15th year with Festival Place. Having worked on productions of “My Fair Lady”, “The Wizard of Oz” and “Oliver!”, the annual Christmas musical is always a highlight of the season. He is excited to be involved once again in this year’s production of “Cats”.
