Fertilizing Your Established Lawn In early April, it is best to assess your lawn for any damage that may have been caused by the winter months. Mid to end of April is a great time to de-thatch your lawn. Removing old grass and loosening up areas that may have been compressed from the snow. This is a good time to assess the need for over- seeding. Aerating will reduce soil compaction and improve soil health. Relieving compaction will improve the result from seed & fertilizer.
