a wonderful time and I’m sure there are a lot of Dads suffering tight hamstrings this week after so much pushing down and pulling up. Thanks to Detective Sergeant Craig West for again providing his time to radar gun the kids as they thundered down the track!

Japan Visit On Tuesday 15th March we are being visited by five students from our sister school in Mito, Japan. This is the same week our Year 5 and 6 students go to camp. The visitors are made up of three Grade 3, one grade 4 and one grade 5 students. We had 8 families offer to billet, but with all the visitors being girls we have billeted with families who have girls in grades 3 and 4. We are all getting very excited as this is our first time we have hosted.

We are also well down the planning stage for our Year 5/6 exchange for two weeks to Mito in June. We have 9 students attending – Elska, Imogen P, Bridget, Taylor, Eva, Luke, Jeremy, Robbie and Patrick, all from Years 5 and 6.

School Council 2016 Thank you and congratulations to Liam Smith, Tracey McGregor and Vanessa Roberts for returning unopposed to School Council. A special welcome to Jenny Royle to her first term on School Council. We still have three one year vacancies to cover for parents who have resigned or their students have finished Grade 6. Please think about helping out your school for 2016 by joining School Council. You will need to attend monthly School Council meetings and join one of the Council’s committees – Finance, Buildings and Grounds, Education Policy and Planning, Fundraising or Promotions. These generally meet monthly at a time that suits the team. Please let me know if interested!!!!

Minimum Absence = Maximum Learning Opportunity Some absences are impossible to avoid. Genuine illness, bereavement, etc. are examples of the acceptable reasons for a child being absent. However, every time a child is late for school or absent from school the child‘s learning progress is disrupted. Most teaching is sequential—what is taught and learned today is the foundation that enables the children to understand and master what is taught tomorrow. It is usually harder for a child to catch up on work missed, than to master it when it is being taught in class. To avoid disadvantaging your student parents should minimise absences by:

Arranging doctor and dentist appointments out of school hours where possible

Develop in your child the habit of being on time to school each day by making sure they get there on time - no excuses

Ensuring that personal shopping trips for your child occur out of school hours

Not allowing children to remain at home for minor / frivolous reasons

Arrange for birthday celebrations, etc., to occur out of school hours

Please remember to provide a written explanation of any absences to your child’s teacher when they return to school. There is also an absence form on our new Tiqbiz.

School Uniform It is very pleasing to see our children in school uniform. Our school mantra ‘together we make a difference’ is all about teamwork and achieving together. I would like to thank all parents for making the effort to ensure our compulsory uniform policy is followed. Jewellery (except Studs and sleepers) is not permitted.

Foyer Traffic Lots of children (and parents) are still using the school foyer as a walk through to the classrooms. Please remember that children can only come into the foyer before school to deliver something to the office or to put their lunch order in the box. After school is the same (minus the lunch order). Please encourage your children to exit the building by the appropriate doors and use the pathway to exit the school.

After School Monitoring of Students Many children are still crossing the road and playing under the trees (one or two even climbing them) until their parents arrive. Please instruct them to wait behind the school fence until you arrive. They may then cross the road. This area is not under supervision and to have students playing so close to a car park is fraught with danger!

Jim Asimakopoulos - Citizen of the Year Tomorrow is another very special assembly. Jim sponsors our Citizen of the Year Award. This is to go to a Current Year 6 student who is not a School Captain and has shown over their years at the school, especially their Year 5 year, a fantastic attitude to their classmates, their teachers and their school. We will also hear from Ryan Jewell, our recipient last year. I’m sure it will be a thrill for our new Year 6 students to hear from Ryan again.

Next week will be our presentation assembly for our school’s Student Leaders. James Merlino will again be our special guest.

Have great weekend and see you all next week, Matthew

Last year, we ran a very successful clothing recycling drive. Through this drive, you are invited to bring in any unwanted clothes, shoes, handbags, linen or soft toys. These are reused/donated to developing countries. As and additional incentive, our school earns 25 cents for every kilo collected. It also gives you the opportunity to actually have a ‘clean out’!

We will be running this drive twice this year – one at the end of this term (bags will be sent home with your child for filling over the Easter break) and another early in Term 4. Each child will be given a bag to bring home but we also accept additional bag-loads using just ordinary bin bags (if you wanted to start collecting now.)

Bags will be collected at the school during the first two weeks of Term 2.

Coming home today is information about Stuck On

You labels. When you are due to order some new

Name labels for your child, please consider using

Stuck on You. If you use the Ferny Creek code, the

school gets commission at the end of year. This is

an ongoing fundraiser/commission so as long as you

use the FCPS code, we will continue to get

commission from any sales indefinitely.
