Dear Parents and Friends, Arunta Working Bee Thank you to all who attended the working bee last Saturday. The turnout was considerably higher than recent times and lots of clearing, sweeping and general cleanup was done! Thank you to the Alsop, Laurence, Hawkins, Jones, Cullen, Scott, Whatman, Porter, Krysko, Puglisi, O’Connor, Tyler and O’Sullivan Families. Children will receive their certificates at tomorrow’s assembly. Education Week 2016 Only three more weeks until our 2016 Education Week. Each year we are very proud to show our community what our school is all about. Wednesday 25th May: 'Open Morning' Parents will be visiting classrooms while children are working. Our 2017 Foundation students will be attending a Teddy Bears play date, having games and songs with some of our current Foundation students. 2017 Foundation parents are invited to partake in a tour with Matthew during this time 9-10. Thursday 26th May: ‘Open Night’ 6:30-8:00 Our last two years Open Nights have been a huge success and we are sure that this will be again. Our focus last year was history and this year it’s going to all about the whole curriculum. Families will get a booklet with a question related to each grade (they have to visit every classroom to find the answer and then submit their booklet to have the chance to win a prize). Choir will perform at 7:45 in the multi purpose room and we will end the night at 8:00. Tea/coffee and biscuits/cake will be available in the multi purpose room. We will have a café set up

for families to sit and have a break if they wish before the choir starts. Mother’s Day Tomorrow Please try to come and share our Mother’s Day celebrations tomorrow morning. From 8.30 to 9.30 we are asking all our Mums and Grandmums to visit their children’s classes. At 9.30 we will have our Mother’s day assembly where you will be served a morning tea and be thoroughly entertained! We would love you all to come and celebrate your special day with us! NAPLAN Next week our Literacy & Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests for 2016 are happening for our Year 3 and 5 students. Our teachers and children have already been engaged in some preparation and trial activities, which they will continue to take part in, at the beginning of this term. We wish them all the best. New Home Learning Policy Commonly referred to as ‘homework’, School Council has passed a new Home Learning Policy. The policy was developed using the Education Departments new homework policy statements. Attached to this newsletter is a copy of our new policy. It is also on our website and you can access a hard copy from the office. Have a great week, Matthew
Arts Studio News
Welcome back to the studio, we have had an exciting start
to term two with our grade five and six students attending
the National Gallery of Victoria for a guided tour and an
afternoon of art exploration. I'd like to thank all the staff and
parents that attended, and the gallery for their excellent
guides.
Our whole school have finished their puppets and
performed their shows, what great creativity. As this term
continues grades one to six will study international artists
and our foundation students will continue to explore art
elements. We will be using some messy mediums so
please ensure students have an art smock with a small
towel attached for drying their hands.
Also as the weather gets wetter it's recommended to have
hard soled slippers in case shoes get muddy. If there are
any parents/grandparents that have knowledge of mosaics,
I would welcome assistance with completing some mosaic
displays. Please see me or drop a note to Jill and we can
discuss what needs to be done.
Thanks and have a terrific term,
Helen Ainsworth
FCPS Home
Learning Policy Rationale:
In conjunction with published DET Guidelines FCPS supports the
ideal that school related activities completed at home may benefit
students, families and school – community relationships.
Goals:
1. To provide opportunities for families to work together in a
non-competitive manner to ensure that activities completed at
home may supplement the goals and expectations of Ferny Creek Primary School.
2. To provide further opportunities for parents to remain informed and to participate in their child’s formal education.
3. To provide opportunities for students to engage in resources available to learners in the wider community.
Implementation:
1. Ferny Creek Primary prefers the term Home Learning be
used when discussing tasks that can be completed at home. 2. Ferny Creek’s Home Learning Policy will be administered in
line with DET Policy and Guidelines. 3. The design of any educational activity should ensure that
students can complete tasks in a stress free environment
and provide every opportunity for the student to succeed. 4. In setting Home Learning tasks, consideration will be given
to important demands of students in their after school time, the needs of the family and the well being of the student.
After school activities such as musical tuition, sport or hobbies are in themselves extremely valuable educational
opportunities.
5. The design of Home Learning tasks should take into account factors of: interest, challenge and open endedness.
They should be purposeful, meaningful and be relevant to the school curriculum and the abilities of the students.
6. The school will provide ideas and suggestions for Home
Learning from time to time. 7. Ferny Creek Primary School, its teachers, parents and
students all have an important role in supporting and taking responsibility for home learning.

Home Learning Expectations:

Evaluation and Review:
This process should be reviewed in line with the regular four year
review schedule.

Please keep this date free.
Looking forward to a wonderful week of activities.
Each compartment in this box contains six
jelly beans of the same flavour. They are
arranged in two layers of three beans.
There is a different flavour in each
compartment.
How many different flavours are there
in the box???
How many beans are there
altogether???
Senior Challenge: Impossible Date
ANSWERS:
How many different dates can the calendar show???
The calendar uses three wheels. One wheel has the twelve months, a second
wheel has the numbers from 0 to 9, and a third wheel shows 1, 2, 3, or a blank
space. Multiplying these together, 12 x 10 x 4 = 480 Different Dates
How many of these are impossible dates???
In a leap year there are 366 days. So by taking the difference, 480 – 366 = 114 impossible dates the calendar can show
Imagine you set the calendar in the dark. When you turn on the light, what is the probability (chance) that the calendar will
show an impossible date???
If you set the calendar in the dark, there are 114 chances in 480 that you will get an impossible date.
The probability is 114 / 480 = 0.2375, or about a quarter
Junior Challenge: Box of Jelly Beans
Jelly beans are sold in ’40 official flavours’. Suppose that the jelly bean company asks you to design a similar
box which could hold all 40 flavours. Is it possible???
