MISSION FORWARD

Page 2: Ferguson Library 2014 annual report

This was a year to look forward as well as reflect on where

we’ve been. It was both bitter and sweet. The Ferguson’s

long-time president, Ernie DiMattia, passed away in June

after a long illness. He was a bright light in the Stamford

community and beloved by all of us here at The Ferguson.

Ernie was a visionary and challenged us to be forward thinking.

To that end we completed a new strategic plan this year,

which will guide the Library through 2017. It was crafted with input from staff, trustees and the

community, and includes new mission and vision statements. It is a clear road map of where we are

going and how we intend to get there.

We have already launched some exciting new initiatives, including the Stamford Small Business Resource

Center, funded by a grant from the First County Bank Foundation, and Sunday passport service at the

Main Library. Our spring fundraiser, A Novel Affair, was our most successful event yet, netting nearly

$200,000. We are grateful to our many sponsors for their generous support. Indeed, we are struck with

how widespread and deep our community support is. Whether it is an individual donation to our Annual

Appeal, or a grant to help us add a day to the Bookmobile, the Stamford community has stepped up to

support their public library.

We are grateful as well, to the city of Stamford for recognizing the Library as an important community re-

source and for increasing our funding this upcoming year. As we begin implementing our new strategic

plan, we will find new ways to reach out to underserved segments of our community, while providing the

kinds of programs and services that have made The Ferguson Library one of our state’s most respected

public libraries.

There is much work to be done, but with the help of our talented staff

and dedicated Trustees, Citizen Advisors, Foundation and Friends boards,

we will embrace both the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

At the end of June, we lost our beloved president, Ernie DiMattia. During his 38 years as president

of The Ferguson, he ushered the Library into the digital age and oversaw the renovation of the

Main Library and all three of its branches. He was a visionary, who saw beyond the day to day, and

embraced rapidly changing technology. When he came to The Ferguson in 1976, library users still

thumbed through card catalogs to look for a book, and our music collections existed on vinyl. Ernie

saw the promise of the Internet early on, and in 1995, The Ferguson became the first public library in

Connecticut to provide Internet access. He opened a passport office and a Starbucks (the first public

library in the U.S. to do so), which became important sources of revenue for the Library.

Ernie was a fierce champion of The Ferguson and libraries in general, and recognized that to stay

relevant libraries had to reinvent themselves as community spaces and centers of continuing educa-

tion. He was active in the Stamford community, and served on the boards of many local organiza-

tions. But The Ferguson was his passion and he cared deeply for its staff. He was a man of vision,

integrity and inspiration.

He will be missed.

This year, the Library’s Board of Trustees adopted a new strategic plan that willguide the Library through 2017. The plan is the culmination of an 18-month project, which included a community survey, multiple stakeholder interviews, staff focusgroups, and a board retreat. It is ambitious, visionary and far reaching, and aims to grow and strengthen the Library’s role as the educational, informational and cultural center of the Stamford community.

As part of this process, the board crafted new mission and vision statements, andupdated the Library’s core values and services.

It is our hope that this plan will provide our city with an understanding of the direction in which the Library is headed, and how we expect to achieve our objectives.

The strategic plan is available on our website, www.fergusonlibrary.org.

We Have an App for ThatTechnology is changing at breathtaking speed, and it’s our job to make sure no one is left behind. Indeed, our new mission talks about using technology to educate and enrich the Stamford community. To that end, we are proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish this year.

Digital discovery tablesOur users can now come in and try out a Kindle or an iPad or other digital device. We set up digital discovery tables in the adult and teen areas so people can get familiar with thetechnology. Our iPad tables with educational apps for the preschool set continue to be a huge hit.

Check out a digital device Our Youth and Adult Services departments began making digital devices available for check-out. In the Adult Department,Kindles and Nooks are preloaded with New York Timesbestselling fiction and nonfiction titles. .

Yes, we really do have an app for thatFerguson’s app, which makes our website easy to use from a mobile device, is now available in Spanish, Russian and Chinese, in addition to English. Last year, there were 493,782visits to our website via our mobile app.

Virtual Library CardsThis new feature on the Library’s app allows users to scan theircard at self check-out. No library card needed.

iMacs with special editing softwareAs part of the First County Bank Foundation grant, we addedtwo iMacs with special editing software to the computer lab. They’re perfect for web design, video editing, genealogy, etc.

Books & More

In 2013 – 2014 we circulated 911,226 booksand other materials.

eBooksEbooks continue to grow in popularity, although theywon’t soon be taking the place of print. In August, adonation from the Stamford Women’s Club allowed usto add 85 world language books to our digital bookcollection. And in June, we launched a new ebookplatform, the 3M Cloud Library, which provides userswith more digital book choices, and easily allowsthem to transfer the content to their own device. Wealso launched a start-up core collection of ebooks forchildren and teens.

Online magazines and other electronic re-sourcesThis was the year of all things digital. In September, we launched Zinio, a database of 23 popular magazines, including Esquire, Rolling Stone and Na-tional Geographic. Multiple users can access itthrough our website and the service immediatelyproved popular – in the first month, 70 people created accounts. In February, we went live with In-dieflix, a new streaming movie service with accessto feature films, shorts and documentaries.

Our librarians are skilled at connecting readers withbooks in any format – print or electronic. In fact, it’sone of the things they enjoy most!

The Library offered a total of 1,973 programs this year. Nearly 56,000people attended.

Our Civility in America series, co-sponsoredby Sacred Heart University, the DilenschneiderGroup and Hearst Media Services CT, contin-ued to draw big audiences with a roster ofcompelling speakers. This year we welcomedAbe Foxman, National Director of the Anti-Defamation League; former CIA spymasterJack Devine; and Bishop Frank Caggiano, among others.

The Ferguson was one of four urban librariesin Connecticut to host the national interactiveart and community building project, TheWAVE. On Saturday, March 29, the Main Li-brary came alive with more than 1,000 people making plastic waves as part of thisinventive installation celebrating water. The breathtaking exhibit was on display in our lobby and children’s room through thesummer, and we did a variety of relatedwater-themed programming.

All year, we offered author programs, bookdiscussions, films as well as a new film discussion series, computer classes, and our popular Let’s Talk English conversationgroups. We also tried out some “Maker-space” programming—everything fromsewing (a big hit!) to making robots and 3D printers. There appears to be a growing in-terest in this type of DIY programming, andwe plan to do more in the coming year.

“I’m so pleased with the [summerreading club] program. It keepsher busy during the summer.”

– Marjorie Cezaire Our 2013 Children’s Summer Reading Club drew a record3,427 registrants – a 35% increase over last year! Part of thesuccess of this year’s program was our outreach to summercamps. These young people often don’t have the opportunity to come to the Library, so with the help of a grant from theMax J. & Winnie S. Rosenshein Foundation we brought it to them.

We are supporting the shift toward STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) in programming for our youngest li-brary users. Storytimes introduce beginning math concepts likedirections and opposites, reinforcing Core Curriculum standards little ones will need when they go to school.

Our many other programs for children include book discus-sions, films, art workshops, chess club and computer program-ming. In August, an audience of about 100 got up close andpersonal with life size replicas of dinosaur fossils, and in Febru-ary, 107 Stamford school students in grades 2 – 6 participatedin our Martin Luther King Civil Rights Story Contest.

Just for Kids

“Baby classes elsewhere cost hundreds of dollars. Here wecan come for free.”

– Meghan Kuebler

Teens

We have an active teen program at The FergusonLibrary that just keeps on growing. T-MAD, ourteen advisory group, helps plan events and rec-ommend young adult titles. This year, a record233 teens volunteered with our children’s sum-mer reading program. They listen to the youngerkids report on books and show that it’s cool tocome to the library! Teen volunteers were alsoindispensable in helping out with our WAVE program, interviewing participants and helpingyounger kids fashion their plastic waves.

The Bookmobile and Purple Bus

Thanks to a $25,000 grant from the Steven A. & Alexandra M.Cohen Foundation, we were able to add another day to the Bookmobile’s schedule. The Bookmobile is now on the roadtwo days a week, visiting preschools, community centers, andhousing complexes throughout the city. With this additionalday, we were able to expand library service on the east andsouth sides of Stamford.

The Purple Bus brings Stamford school children to the Library, some for the very first time. 1549 children from 15 elementaryand preschools visited on the Purple Bus this year.

“I love the bookmobile because I enjoy seeing my daughter’s facewhen I have new books for her to read.”

– Jasmine Bryant

Community Partnerships and OutreachOne of the goals of our new strategic plan is to increase access to li-brary and community resources. To that end, we have cultivated part-nerships with many organizations in the community, and often bringlibrary services to those who are unable to come to us. Here aresome of the ways we collaborate.

• World Book Night – volunteers fanned out from the library tohand out books as part of this national book give-away project.

• Stamford Senior Center – our librarians conducted book discus-sions at the Senior Center and also helped seniors become com-fortable with digital technology.

• Art exhibits – we partner with the Stamford Art Association to display art on an ongoing basis at the Main Library.

• Tax assistance provided by AARP at the Harry Bennett andWeed Memorial & Hollander branches. 950 people were served.

• STEMFest – Ferguson participated in this community educationevent at Mill River Park, sponsored by the Board of Education.

• Reading is Fundamental (RIF) book giveaways – hosted at theLibrary in cooperation with the Stamford Public Education Foundation. 700 children went home with a free book.

• Kindergarten readiness night – in conjunction with the SchoolReadiness Council. 200 families came to the Library to learn aboutkindergarten.

• Through our Stamford Small Business Resource Center, Information Services librarians reached out to the Business Council of Fairfield County and the Stamford Innovation Center to promote our technology and research offerings.

• Health fairs – The Ferguson had a presence at the Yerwood Center and Chelsea Piers community health fairs.

• Volunteers from accounting firm KPMG listened to young readersas part of our Book Buddies program over the summer. A bookgiveaway allowed us to get extra books into the hands of HeadStart classrooms.

The event, held this year at theMain Library, drew about 100 guests for an elegant, lovely af-ternoon.

Friends Author SeriesThis year, the Friends hosted New York Times bestselling au-thors Wally Lamb and Chris Bohjalian as part of the Friends Au-thor Series. This popular series brings exciting authors into theLibrary for evenings of food, wine and conversation. With a modest ticket price, it is a mini fundraiser for the Friends.

Books for Babies and Literary CompetitionThe Friends’ Books for Babies program, marked its 28th year bydelivering books to more than 2,000 new mothers at StamfordHospital. The Literary Competition, now in its 29th year, recog-nized the best in student writing at an awards ceremony inApril.
