The past year featured
significant milestones
for Femto. There
were large projects
executed, the demand
on CAE software grew
significantly and we
received the Siemens
Top Partner Award
Femto Engineering is specialized in
mechanics and analyzes products
and constructions using Finite
Element Technology. In addition to
linear FEA, we also offer solutions
for dynamic, transient, thermal, flow
(CFD) and fatigue issues. Femto
advises companies in the selection
of CAE software and develops
customized programs for easy and
quick simulation performance. As
the official Siemens PLM reseller in
the Benelux, we can provide you
with state of the art CAE software
such as Femap, NX CAE and NX

Succes Plastic Fair and Offshore EnergySeptember and October 2013
Femto has been present at both the Plastics fair and the Offshore Energy expo. Many different Industries need specialized people, software and skills to make sure they develop their products and projects based on quality information. Femto has been welcoming old and new relations during these expo’s and had a great opportunity to show and explain all the specialized services Femto supports. Thank you for visiting us!
Femto receives Siemens Top Partner Award 5th November 2013
At the Siemens PLM Software European Partner Leadership Summit (EPLS) on the 5th of November, Femto Engineering was rewarded with the Top Partner Award for the Benelux. Because of the 150% year to year growth of their CAE software business for Siemens PLM Software, their excellent performance on the Voice of the Customer survey and the high loyalty of their customer base for many years, Femto received the Top Partner award. Tom Santegoeds and Bastiaan Modderman accepted the award from Tony Jolly, Vice President channels, EMEA.“This is a major achievement for the team at Femto Engineering”, said Tom Santegoeds, Managing Director of Femto Engineering.
New office for Femto Engineering GmbHwww.femto-engineering.de
In October Femto Engineering GmbH moved to a new office as the old office became too small. The additional space allows Femto to expand further with new engineers and interns. The new office is also located in the Technologiehof Münster, thus the visiting adres remains: Femto Engineering GmbH, Mendelstraße 11, 48149 Münster, Germany.

A Finite Element Analysis was performed by Femto
Engineering on a Van Dam “Gadam” fire door for
the Offshore Industry. The results were correlated
to a full scale fire test according to the IMO Fire
Test Procedure. After this the model was then used
to predict thermal and structural response on an
exceptionally high 60 minute Jetfire load.
The project was to analyse both the thermal and structural behaviour of the fire doors, with the main purpose to obtain a realistic model in FEMAP which could be used to simulate other fire tests, on similar types of door in different sizes. In order to develop a Finite Element Method (FEM) model correlating to the full scale tested fire door, certain analysis parameters had to be tuned to be able to simulate the tests. The material properties of the insulation layers, sealing and steel parts are highly dependent on temperature and show complex thermal behaviour. To perform the thermal analysis a furnace temperature was applied on the fire side of the door.
‘‘”This analysis has become a key factor in the Approval of special fire doors.”
— Pieter Verburg Van Dam BV
On the non-fire side a convection load was applied to give an optimal simulation of the heat transfer to the adjacent room. After the thermal analysis a structural analysis was performed. For this analysis

the thermal load was used generated from the output of the previous thermal analysis. The door was placed in a bulkhead and for the structural analyses the edges of the bulkhead where fixed in all translational and rotational degrees of freedom. The temperatures resulting from the Finite Element Analysis where correlated and therefore identical to the temperatures measured at the thermocouples used in the fire test. Since all results where representative for the real fire door, the material properties had to be tuned correctly and the model is considered to be valid for the prediction of other tests for the same type of door.
For the next test the worst-case jet fire load situation was simulated by using an almost instant temperature rise up to 1200 degree Celsius on the fire side of the door. In 60 minutes the door still gave good insulation against the exceptionally high temperature load. Realistic temperature contour plots were made. By using structural analysis we were able to assess displacements with given thermal expansion to prevent fire-passage.

In previous newsletters you might have already seen some things about the SPH method. SPH stands for Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics; it is a continuum based discrete element method that uses particles to simulate the behavior of materials. Due to its dynamic structure SPH is often used to simulate fluids. However it can also be used to simulate solids. To illustrate this we have created a benchmark SPH simulation about a bullet impacting a steel plate. The plate has a thickness of 14.3 mm. The bullet, a 338 Winchester Magnum A-frame hunting bullet, impacts the plate with an initial velocity of 842 m/s. The results of the simulation were compared to experimental results. The overall difference was less than five percent.
