St. Francisville Symphony this Friday

The 2nd annual Louisiana Veter-ans Festival was held at the St. Fran-cisville Sports Park Pavilion on Friday November 8 and Saturday the 9th. The Vets Fests primary sponsor is the Loui-siana Veterans Foundation organized and chartered in 2012. Its mission is to provide financial aid to family mem-bers of both veterans and active duty military.
The Vets Foundation chose one of its own as headline entertainer for the November Festival, Craig Morgan a country music singer with 10 top ten hit songs. Morgan served over 10 years of active duty with the 101st and 82nd airborne units plus 9 years of Reserve duty. A large crowd greeted Morgan on Friday night at the sports Park.
“The Louisiana Veterans Founda-tion is a 501 C (3) organization quali-fied as a non-profit with the IRS,” Tom
Louisiana Veterans Festival A Big SuccessHildebrandt told the EXPLORER. “We operate with an 8 member Board of Directors. Our mission is simply to help financially the families of veter-ans and active duty military personnel. This is a group of people we owe so much to but need our help on an ongo-ing basis.”
During the years from 1972 through 1980, Hildebrandt was a naval subma-riner. One of the mission of the sub he was assigned was to escort the aircraft carrier Enterprise on some of her nu-merous deployments at sea. After his naval career, Hildebrand worked for the Entergy Corporation before retir-ing. Hildebrandt also currently serves as the Commander of the St. Francis-ville American Legion.
“Last year was our first Vets Fest. We didn’t know quite what to expect,” Hildebrandt acknowledged. “We had

The second concert in the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra (BRSO) Chamber Series titled “A Festival of Baroque Music” will take place on Fri-day, November 22 at 7:00 pm at Grace Episcopal Church in Saint Francisville.
Plans are also underway for the an-nual Christmas Concert and Dessert Reception to be held at Hemingbough on December 6 at 7:00 pm. This con-cert will again feature the BRSO brass and precussion ensemble under the di-rection of David Torns. This concert is a local favorite and is a wonderful way to begin the holiday season. The per-formance will include popular Christ-mas music in a festive atmosphere. The Saint Francsville Symphony As-sociation will provide a homemade dessert buffet following the concert for those in attendance.
Individual tickets for each concert are $25 and may be purchased at the Bank of St. Francisville, by calling the BRSO Ticket Office (225-383-0500) or at the door.
A Veterans Day Ceremony hon-oring veterans was held at Hillcrest Cemetery on Thursday, Nov. 7th in Norwood, Louisiana. The program was hosted by the Feliciana Chap-ter of the UDC. Catherine Jacocks, representing the organization, wel-comed everyone to the ceremony. Rev. Ed Jelks gave the invocation and then Mary Anna Leverett an-other Feliciana UDC member led the group in the Pledge of Alle-giance, and Zeke Glascock sang the National Anthem.
The program continued with Ja-cocks asking each person that was in attendance that is a veteran to give their name, the branch of ser-vice and what years they served. Then others in attendance told about their relatives that are veter-ans or serving at this time. Beth Dawson, UDC members, asked if any veterans that were present that didn’t receive their Louisiana Vet-erans Honor medal, she wanted to
help them to get the medal that they deserve. She was also collecting the names of soldiers serving at this time so that the United Methodist Women and the Alexander Stirling Chapter of the DAR could send them a Christmas package.
Becky Newsom presented a POW/MIA Remembrance Ceremo-ny. Every detail in this ceremony was important and symbolic. This was a very touching ceremony. Jeke Glascock then sang “God Bless America”.
Roll Call of Remembrance was followed by Mayor Becky Bellue as she called out the names of all the veterans that are buried at Hill-creast. As she called their names a family member was given an Amer-ican flag that was provided by Sher-iff Talmadge Bunch and his wife Sue. Beth Dawson read a poem titled Veterans Day and then the program ended with Rev. Ed Jelks, giving the benediction.
Family members then placed flags on the graves of their love ones. Many thanks were given to Doyle Reddit who has been instru-mental in this program since its be-ginning. He takes the time to call the love ones of all the veterans and others and he is also very influential in the upkeep of the ceremony. He went all over the cemetery making sure that every veteran had a flag by their grave. Redditt is a Navy Vet-eran.

over 5,000 people come out over the two day event last year. I think we will top that or at least equal that attendance number this year.”
Two other Board members of the Foundation are: Durell Kraemer ([email protected] ) and Jim Goody ([email protected] ) Hildebrandt can be reached at [email protected]
“We are looking for new members for the foundation and to spread the word on the mission of the Louisiana Veterans Foundation,” Hildebrandt stated. “We are also looking for more sponsors, both individuals and corpo-rations.”
Apparently the work of the Founda-tion has spread beyond the borders of Louisiana. Two members of the “Miss-Lou Vets Homes” from Natchez, Doug Barfield and Tim Rushing were ob-
serving the La Vets Fest.“Our goal in Natchez with the
Miss-Lou Vest Homes, is first to pro-vide a central location whereby veter-ans can come apply for their benefits at a one place instead of having to go to several different agencies,” Rush-ing explained. “Too many veterans get disgusted with the system and drop out that requires them to go around in cir-cles from one agency to another. This will be one stop shopping so to speak for them.”
“We are considering sponsoring an event like this in Natchez. The Louisi-ana Vets Fest is truly an amazing ac-complishment. The second stage of our mission would be to provide temporary housing for vets and their families in the Natchez area at a central location.”
The Louisiana Vets Fest actually kicked off on Friday at 1200 hours when the Gumbo started cooking. Sam Politz, well known DH kept the music going to inspire the Gumbo cookers. At 1700 hours, the first of two official cer-
emonies was held. A welcome address was given followed by an invocation, the presentation of colors, pledge of al-legiance and the National Anthem. Ju-lia DeJean sang the National Anthem.
At 1730 hours, the gumbo was served after the judging of the chef’s gumbo creations was completed. The Alaina Richard Band entertained the crowd during dinner. Craig Morgan, whose latest album is titled “This Ole Boy,” began his crowd pleasing enter-tainment at 1900 hours.
On Saturday morning, the Vets Fest started with a full ceremony with Ju-lia DeJean again singing the National Anthem. However, a POW/MIA cer-emony was held with Bagpipes and Drums adding to the solemnity of the occasion.
The Angola Prison Band performed at 1000 hours followed by WWII/Korea/Vietnam Vets awards. Chuck Vincent with Eagle Air of Lafayette provided a spectacular flyover in a T-6 WWII vintage aircraft. The Richard Family and the Andrews Sisters provid-ed entertainment before the US Marine Band from New Orleans took the stage.
Other entertainers on the program during lunch hour were Scott Clemens and the Josh Garrett Band. Lunch was BBQ and Jambalaya which started out in a cooking contest on Saturday morn-ing.
The Vets Fest also conducted Silent and Live Auctions fundraisers during the festivities. A MASH 911 / EMS unit provided free blood pressure checks throughout the two day event. The Lou-isiana Women’s Veterans League was on hand with their display commemo-rating ladies from Louisiana who have served our country in uniform.
A Flag Burning Ceremony was con-ducted by a local Boy Scout troop. The KC Color Guard closed the two day fest at 1600 hours on Saturday.

United in faith, several churches in the Clinton Area gathered at Our Lady of Assumption
Catholic Church on Saturday, November 9, 2013 for a prayer ser-vice and color fun run in an effort to support veterans. During the prayer service, Fr. Jeffrey Bayhi, pastor of St. John the Baptist and Our Lady of Assumption Catholic churches wel-comed all to unite in faith as Chris-tians, praying for our country and its freedom. Two veterans, James Can-field and Willie “Moon” Mullins, spoke on how their faith has helped them serve our country and Cole Per-menter, Youth Pastor of Bluff Creek Baptist Church spoke on Faith and Patriotism. All veterans and active military were recognized and wore navy shirts that represented they had fought for our freedom. Blue Star Mothers present were recognized as they are a group of women who have children who are currently serving our country. One gold star mom was present, as her son died for our right of freedom. Approximately 200 people gathered to join in the prayer service that began with the Pledge of Allegiance and ended in song by Lee Greenwood, “God Bless America” along with the Our Father prayer.
After the prayer service, the Clinton police escorted the partici-pants in the two-mile fun color run throughout the town, and the run-ners and walkers were doused with colored powder at the end of the route. Silly string was sprayed on participants as they passed the Clin-ton United Methodist Church and St. Andrews Episcopal Church. Coca-Cola, Feliciana Physical Therapy, Landmark Bank and Feliciana Bank & Trust Company donated to our run, and we are sincerely grateful. Also, many participants brought Community Coffee, batteries (AA and AAA), spray cologne, and non-

Deacon Roosevelt Dunn, Jr., Honored at Homochitto Baptist Association
On Sunday, October 6, 2013, Deacon Roosevelt Dunn, Jr., was honored at the 144th Annual Session of the Homochitto Baptist Association in Gloster, Mississippi. Dr. Brenda Jackson, Secretary of the Association states, “usually it was a staff member or dedicated member of the Association to be memorialized, but this time the honor was given to one who is dedicated and works diligently even during his illness to receive this honor.” The 144th Annual Session of the Homochitto Baptist Association presented Deacon Dunn, with a beautiful plaque recognizing him for many years of dedicated service as Vice-President of the Youth Department and Treasurer of the Association.
