That Tired Feeling.
The enemy are expriencing anan attack of "that tired feeling,''ever since the arrival of the Chinathis morning. The ntmost effortsof the HOLOMUA staff physicianhave not availed to yield a satis-
factory diagnosis of the affectiimto onr friends, tho enemy, bnt itis surmissed that the feeling ofweariness is caused by the re-
ceipt of news from Washingtonto the effect that the oath ofvoters, as prescribed in the Con-
vention act, is'regarded by theWashington Government as anabandonment of tho citizenshipof those taken it, this supportingtho position assumed in the be-
ginning by this journal. Theholy guild were expecting(?) thittMinister Willis would receiveinstructions from his superiorthat the oath in question shouldnot bo regarded as affecting theexisting citizenship of those whoswallow it. Tho expected (?) didnot occur, hence the tired foelingin tho land and tho depressedcountenances of the "gang."
What's TJp.
Tho Advertiser' a chango offront in regard to tho Constitu-tional Convention has fairlyparalyzed tho community. The-oflic- ial
organ now proposes thattho Advisor' Council should notsit in tho convention but that allmembers should bo olocted by apopular voto and together withtholministry franio a constitutionunder which Hawaii might get astablo popular and satisfactorygovernment. Wo need not callour readers attention to tho factthat this policy ns now outlinedby tho Advertiser has beon advo-
cated in tho columns of tho Ho-LOiiU-
since tho first day onwhich a constitutional conven-tion was mentioned. We havestated and wo repeat that thiscountry can get along xcry nicelvin tho future as it has in tho past,if a government on truly popularprinciples is established. Wehavo promised to use all tho in-
fluence which wo are aware thatour paper possess to bring thepeople of Hawaii into a harmonious flock that will solemnlyswear to support the Provisionalgovernment until a popularlyelected convention has decidedwhat form of government thogroat majority of voters desiro tolive under. Provided always thattho Provisional government andits supporters solemnly agroo toabide by any decision of the ma-
jority and peacefully will adoptwhatever form of government isformed by such a convention. But tho puzzling point is, whatmado tho Advertiser desert itsformer policy and suddenly ap-pear through its political trap-door like a dcivs tx macliina work-ing for civil rights and liberalideas? Is it' simply a clap-tra- p toshow to tho United States thatAmerican principles role and arefostered here? Or is it that coming events cast their shadows? Oris it that tho "Tisor" at last istired of playing second fiddle andwants to intimidate Mr. Dole andtho other Kindergarten states-men? It cannot bo presumed thatthe Advertiser editor suddenlywoko up to tho fact that anilloberal, unpopular and contemp-tible proposition like tho onemade by tho p. g' for a conven-tion would cast unmentionablediscredit on all connected withtho late annexation scheme andcover our alleged American resi-dents with odium, ridicule andcontempt Whatever tho motivesof our morning contemporary may
be we heartily agree with theprinciple set forth, but we again.
repeat what we nave said in aformer rssue, "postpone the convention for two months." If theideas of tho Advertiser or of thepowerful political organization oftho American League are to berecognized the time to alter pre- -
sent conditions is too short andp0nnd additional, and above 90the Government will find if itreally has the future welfare ofHawaii at heart that a morethorough discussion and a fullerexchange of ideas will further theprosperity of this country andtho contentment its people vastlybetter than ' tho railroading ofa constitution through a body ofnon- - representative, unpopularmissionary planters and theirtools. It is yet time to makehaste slowly.

CORRESPONDENCE.
Ve do not hold ourselves responsible fortha opinions or the utterances of ourcorrespondents.
Editor Holojiua:
The London Times iu comment-
ing on President Cleveland's ap-
parent change of front, incident-
ally if not ironically, refers to
the recent electoral successes of
the Republican party as having produced in the President'smind an "apprehension," and adobilitatiug effect on tho "Presi-dents nerves." Nothing of thokind. The Times knew nothingof tho great p. g. warrior CaptainGood, who, with his army which"goes on the run," stood readyto "fight a foe either inoternalor external," and stamp the crewof an English man-of-w- ar intothe earth. How fortunate it was
that someone here was posted, so
as to warn the United Statesauthorities against coming ashoreto get wiped out by Good andhis invincibles. Thus it is thatthe Times should go slow in cast-
ing around for tho motives of
President Cleveland's inaction, who now can donbt that Lieuten-ant Lncien Young, who isstationed at "Washington, haswhispered in the ear of the "War
Department wonLof cantion lesttho naval forces of the UnitedStates in Hawaii should be obliterated by the Good Napoleonof tha Pacific irettinsr "in thaorun."
Good is a very modest generalIn "writing of possibilities," he issilent about the Kauai campaignsin which about half his array
went "on the run" to enjoy thepicnic of capturing one kanaka,
and he a half paralyzed leper. How the brave contingent leftHonolulu inarching down Fortstreet with the great Good attheir head; bow tho army carriedKrupp guns and grape and shellto capture one cripple; how theheroes were bravo in shelling thehaunt of the leper from a saledistance; were not all these ex-
ploits written in heroics, by astaff of p. g. newspaper reportersa&d official military despatchiifos. How tho amy got -- ia
the run" back with three of theirnumber dead, and the leper stillAt large, was something thatGood is never likely to tell "ingath" or publish in the by waysof Colfax.
Good need not trsut to poss-ibles ili of glory in the future. The laurels of Kauai are-history-
,
and should be emblazoned onbanners which Good will hangon the outer walls of his "fineposition," to scare royalists.
Good may yet have the opport-unity which he evidently desiresof satisfying the royalists, thathe and his force which, aided bythe police, and a proclamation ofmartial law on Kauai was notequal to the capture of one kanaka conld now trample five orten thousand, "into the earth."Good who was about twelvemonths in commission as a mili-
tary captain before he coulddrill a squad without looking athis field book on parade, shouldpray that he may never encoun-
ter royalists, or English man-of-war's-ra- en
in real earnest. Godhelp the men that would be vic-
tims, in action, of such militaryincompetents as Good.
In the meantime the p. g.
should be proud of the militarygenius who knows the politicalwickedness of foreign ministers, and as the p. g. are apparentlystrong enough to defy the greatpowers by, permitting their mili-
tary rapscallions to write theiropinions about foieign Represent-
atives; it is small matter after all, that, as the Times states, thereshould be in tho mind of thePresident "an apprehension"lest Good should get, "on therun.

Editor Holojiua:
Although I have always had a
very pronounced antipathy to
anything savoring of newspapernotoriety, yet occasion will arise,Mr. Editor, when the force of
circumstances leave a man no op-
tion butto seek to be delivered from
a wrong by having recourse to
the powerful agency of the publicpress. And it is precisely foribis reason that I crave your in-
dulgence for encroaching uponyour columns aneut a matter,
which, though possibly of minorinterest to some of your readers,is nevertheless of last import to
your correspondent, involving as
it does, an honest man's richestlegacy, i.e., a fair name and anunsullied reputation.
On Jan. 9 of this year 1 wasmade the subject of the followingparagraph in the "Daily Bul-
letin:""Alexander D. McEvoy, "late
Deputy Sheriff of Fresno Count'.Cal., is on a visit to Honolulu. As a patrolman in San Franciscoin 1889, he exposed a Chinesegambling ring in which otherswere implicated. His rewardwas to be dismissed the service,
. . . Ill tas the examiner stated in tuoaccount of the death of the headChinese gambler in 1892. Mr.McEvoy had b'den appointed to
the force through the influenceof General O. O. Howard. UnitedStates Arniv."
The would be-fun- man of theStar an unvarnished expose of
wohse own antecedouts wonld per-
haps fail to reveal him in thelight of such au immaculate par-
agon of perfection as that inwhich be now poses before anadmiring Hawaiian pnblic reprinted the above on the followingday. Thdt be could not refrainfrom appending some slurringremark about my royalistic proclivities of which he knows nothing, seeing that nave neverobtruded my private views of theHawaiian imbroglio upon anyonein Honolulu, nor become identiaed with an) local politicalorganisation is not surprisingto those who know the natoro of
the beast. This bruium fulmen, however, is too trivial for anyserious remonstrance on my part.
What does concern me, neverthe-
less, and concerns me deeply is,
that in the face of the stutomont
thns published certain personsin this city, from motives whichare beyond tho ken of apprehen-
sion, have seen fit to circulatereports reflecting m the mostgrievous manner npon ray char-
acter and honesty, even going so: far as to stive out that I was dis--

iniquity that I was instrumentalin exposing in others. I forbearto express my opinion of menwho value their neighbor's goodname so lightly as to make suchbaseless and damaging attacksbehind his back, without duo in-
vestigation, lest the bitterness ofmy feelings betray me into ex-
ceeding tho bounds of discretion. But I will not brook such cow-
ardly tactics from anyone withoutentering a vigorous protest, anddaring them to come out in thelight of day and repeat their slanderous assertious in black andwhite. And in refutation of
these dastardly aspersions per-
mit me to subjoin the followingextracts from San Franciscopapers: '
"To Alexander McEvoy, whom
Gano had removed from thesquad on the ground that he was
a crank who was destroying theefficiency of the men, belongs thecredit or being the primary causeof the investigation which resulted in tho landing of Gano, 'Crystal, Robinson and McCarthy inprison McEvoy is a youngman of excellent character, who
ttas-mad- e a good record duringthe short time he has been on
he police forcer He is brightand intelligent, and his superiorsspeak of him with terms of
praise. He was formerly in thenavy. McEvoy deserves promo- -ion for the detective skill he
displayed in working up the caseagainst Gano." Chronicle, Feb.21, 1SS9.
"To prevent misunderstanding:ho "Report" was in error in
stating .on Mar. 30th that Alex-
ander D. McEvoy when a police-
man, was concerned in the Ganobribery case. The statementfull and an internpted sway.
McEvoy was on the watch thatnight, but he stated afterwardsthat he suspected Gano, and for
.onco played the part of detective.Ho said ho saw Gano receivethe money and heard tho promisegiven that no harm would come to
the gamblers. Gano was dismissed from the force etc."
In conclusion Mr. Editor, Ijg leave to add that I did not
leive the force until Mar. 1st1S91, fully two years after thedamaging disclosures were made,my services being dispensed withupon the gronnd of physical dis- -ubility consequent upon tho injuries which I had received inthe act of stopping a runawayhorse. Furtuer, that I have inmy possession a certificate signedby all the members of the Board of
San Francisco Police Comissio- n-
ers as well as by Chief Crowley, which fully substantiates the factof my honorable discbarge, andthat I challenge each and all of
my calumniators to disprove asingle iota of th;s nry trnthfulversion of the affair with my
sincere thanks for your courtesyin allowing sp ice for my lengthycommunication. I subscribe my-
