History

Born in India, Madan came to Eastern Canada in 1967 to pursue a career in law. But once Madan and his wife began settling into their new home in Halifax, they realized the high-quality wicker and basketry they desired for their home was nowhere to be found. Madan found himself longing for traditional wicker furniture to make his new home feel more like home.

But Madan had a family to support, and so he started teaching English while completing business courses at Dalhousie University. When he eventually opened his first store at the Scotia Square Mall in Halifax, Madan started travelling back and forth to Asia for business.

He soon found that unique, stylish wicker furniture could easily be brought back to Canada. This discovery opened up a new world of opportunity for Madan and his family: they soon began travelling back and forth to India more often, bringing unique touches of Asia back to Eastern Canada in the form of a new livelihood. The family’s new business venture also allowed them to keep in touch with their family and culture.

The first Wicker Emporium opened in Halifax in 1972, and since then the business has grown into a successful family operation. Over the years, the company’s product line has expanded to include solid wood furniture, home accessories, cushions, pillows, throws, baskets, lighting, rugs, and other home decor items. Despite these changes, the goal has always remained the same: to provide a touch of exoticism to Canadian homes, and allowing people to express their inner designer.

There are now twenty-six Wicker Emporium outlets in Atlantic Canada and Ontario, employing 180 people. For forty years, Wicker Emporium has been sourcing handcrafted, unique products from all over the world, including India, China, Indonesia, Vietnam, and other parts of Asia.

We at Wicker Emporium have been running our privately-owned family business for the past forty years. We currently employ 150 people, from store level managers, to warehouse staff, to head office staff.

I opened the first Wicker Emporium store in 1972 to support my family. It also gave me a chance to build friendships and business relationships with people all over the world. I’m very thankful to our millions of customers, our core team, our store sales teams, and our overseas suppliers for the opportunity to share my culture and creativity with Eastern Canada.

Habitat FOR HuManity

While our business is all about bringing the best products to your home, we know that many people living in Nova Scotia are without homes.

Since 2010, Wicker Emporium has proudly supported Habitat for Humanity’s NS ReStore. Through donations like ours, the ReStore is able to support the construction of safe, affordable homes in Nova Scotia.

Every donation to Habitat for Humanity is a gift to the community. People are able to purchase home renovation products at discount prices, giving them the opportunity to complete the projects they couldn’t have completed before. Tons of material is diverted from the landfill every year, benefiting our environment. But perhaps most importantly, our donations help economically challenged families in Nova Scotia achieve home ownership. Living in simple, decent, affordable housing changes everything for these families.
