February Update

Welcome to the inaugural issue of the AIR newsletter! As you know, a recent organizational restructuring created a new department – the Office of Analytics & Institutional Reporting – that we are calling AIR. Yes, we’ve heard all the funny jokes about our acronym…Hot Air, Air Heads, Clean Air…but we like Fresh AIR best because it captures the spirit and new direction of the department.

In addition to submitting reports to the state, AIR is responsible for providing daily reports to support operations and as-needed reports for special projects and strategic initiatives. And this is where you will start to see a fresh, new approach. Over the coming months the team will release dashboards and scorecards and interactive reports that bring our institutional data to life and make it easier for you to manage, track and analyze information that matters to you most.

Are you a faculty member curious as to whether the new TSI rules impacted enrollment in your math class? We are creating a tool that will help you explore this question.

Do you manage a budget? We are creating a series of financial reports to help you track encumbrances and see actuals-to-projections.

Are you involved in enrollment management efforts on your campus? A solution is being developed to support these efforts.

Our team of experienced analysts will help you research questions so you can make data-informed decisions. We are also working on ways to present information graphically so it’s easier to understand. Excited? We are too! This monthly newsletter is the first of many new services designed to bring fresh AIR to the college!

Civitas is Coming

Data modeling. Analytics. Actionable insights.

If these terms are foreign to you now, they won’t be soon as Lone Star College begins its partnership with Civitas Learning to bring predictive analytics to the college. Using our institutional data, Civitas develops sophisticated data models that help us explore (for instance) which students are at risk of dropping out and why, what factors contribute to student attrition, and how effective intervention strategies are in addressing the problem.

Their predictive models are custom-built for Lone Star College and use advanced analytics to deliver insights (fancy way of saying “better understanding”) to guide initiatives in teaching, learning, student support and institutional operations. Civitas has our data now and is almost finished putting it into their Illume platform.

The next step is to validate the data and that should happen in the next few weeks. After that, they build our data models, deliver training and then we roll it out (probably in late March/early April)! You’ll get updates as work progresses.

Ground-breaking Opportunity to Analyze Performancefrom High School through College

Need data? Email AIR at [email protected].

LSC-North Harris and key school districts are providing a view into student performance that is unprecedented in Lone Star College’s history. Working with the North Harris County Education Alliance (NHCEA), we are able to view a student’s progress in mathematics from high school through college in order to look for patterns that could predict success and should be repeated as well as

those patterns that are not effective and need to be modified. The initiatives being proposed will then be piloted and the results will be scrutinized through the same process to determine their effectiveness and whether they should be expanded.

The NHCEA is not a program, but rather a community partnership to support student success. It is comprised of community leaders from the business, community, and education sectors in North Harris County to bring together ideas and resources to improve student achievement. It is built around the fundamental principles of Unite, Target, Measure, Persist, and do it all from cradle to career. NHCEA believes that education is a lifelong experience that begins well before a child ever steps foot in a classroom, and continues long past a cap and gown commencement. The only way to reach the goal of success for every student is to think about how the community as a whole can support students at every step.

The intense dependency upon data requires the Office of Analytics and Institutional Reporting to play a key role in the process and Vanya Rhea, LSC-NH analyst, is a critical member of the Math Collaborative Action Network (Math CAN).

"Data collection and analysis are crucial steps in our process: whatever we choose as an intervention must be measurable, feasible, scalable and sustainable so that we know we can achieve real results," says Dr, Sandy Frieden, Director of Continuous Improvement for All Kids Alliance, the partner working with NHCEA.

LSC-North Harris faculty and academic leaders involved in the project are excited about the possibilities the partnership brings. Watch for more on this in the coming months.
