FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER, 2015
FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK…
January has been a cold month! Due to the cold weather, we have had many indoor recesses. This is often challenging for students, as they enjoy recess as an opportunity to interact and socialize with their friends. Please take a few extra minutes in the morning to make sure that your child arrives at school with snow pants, boots, a hat, mitts (an extra pair is always a good idea) and scarves. Our Grade 4’s and 5’s are currently working with Ms.
Gilliland and the Giant Floor Mat in the gym. This wonderful learning opportunity allows for our Junior students to explore the natural resources of Canada in a
unique way. If you have a Grade 4 or 5 student, be sure to ask them about the giant floor map. During the third week of February (Feb. 17th) McHugh students will be involved in grade appropriate safety and antibullying presentations hosted by our community police officer. We are looking forward to the students participating in these presentations and the opportunity to enhance their social skills in a positive and respectful manner. Our School Council is actively organizing our Dance-
a-thon, which will be on Friday, March 6. The Kick-Off assembly will occur in the afternoon on Wednesday, February 25th. We hope that all of our families will support our Dance-a-thon!
First Term Report Cards (Grade 1 – 5) were sent home Friday, February 6th. Teachers will be in contact with families if an interview is to be scheduled.
Our Kindergarten Registration, for students born in 2011, is scheduled for February 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Registration forms can be downloaded from our school website and may be filled out at home and brought completed to the school on the registration date. We look forward to our Kindergarten registration days and working with the new families joining the McHugh Learning community. February 16th is Family Day and there is no school that day. We hope that you are able to set aside some time to enjoy with your family. Enjoy a wonderful long weekend together!!! Looking forward into March, our March Break is March 16 – 20, inclusive. Ms.Kempe
Principal, McHugh PS

FROM THE BOOK SHELF
The McHugh Library Learning Commons is now on Twitter! When visiting the library, students will have the opportunity to learn about the appropriate uses of social media in a small group, guided setting. Using our library Twitter account, students can now contact authors of books they enjoy, write short reviews of books, write tweets promoting stewardship, and participate in a conversation about Blue Spruce and Silver Birch books with other school libraries in Peel. They will learn how to use Twitter safely and begin to understand how to use it as a communication tool.
Our twitter account will also share events organized by the library, such as our upcoming Giant Floor Map learning sessions. Students will continue to practice effective digital citizenship such as choosing photos
carefully, choosing words wisely, and not publishing their name or photo. Please feel free to follow us at @McHughLib and check out some of the neat things we’re doing at McHugh!
Thank you, Ms.Gilliland
