Jobs for Americas Graduates (JAG) is a national nonprofit organization that assists high school juniors and seniors in preparation for full time employment and post-secondary educa-tion in local high schools. Currently there are 8 schools in NW Indiana with JAG programs. In the year 2016-2017, JAG Indiana had a graduation rate of 95 percent vs. the statewide non-JAG graduation rate of 89 percent. Of those graduates 89 percent of students had positive outcomes (full-time employed, military, or education/training). Last year JAG students across the state were awarded $26 million dol-lars in scholarships. Northwest Indiana students accounted for $4.3 million in scholarships.

A JAG program can be found in the fol-lowing Northwest Indiana high schools: Knox High School, Michigan City High School, Wirt/Emerson VPA, Roosevelt College and Career Academy, Calumet New Tech High School, West Side Leadership Academy, East Chicago Central High School, and Hammond High School. Note: JAG will also be starting new programs at Hammond Rogers Clark, River Forest High School, and North Judson-San Pierre High School High School.

CHRiS COtO was tired of job hopping and wanted to find sustainable steady employment. He had been through obstacles with multiple company’s laying him off—causing him to change his career from

auto mechanics to commercial driving. He finally decided it was time to go to WorkOne for assistance. Commercial driving wasn’t the career path he wanted to continue on. Instead, he utilized the resources WorkOne had to offer. He went to every free workshop offered to him to strengthen his skills, learn job searching techniques, and enhance his resume. While working with a career advisor, he realized he was interested in a welding career. He worked with an Adult Education teacher to brush up on his math skills to enroll in welding training. Coto enrolled at Calumet Welding, but he was put on a waiting list until the next class was available. In the meantime, he found part-time employment to continue earning an income. He successfully completed training in 15 weeks, and was hired as a welder at Hoist Liftruck 8 days later. He is extremely satis-fied with his employment!

career & fuTureBRiOna LaRdydELL was referred to WorkOne by her Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) Specialist. As an upcoming Hammond High

School graduate, a part-time McDonald’s worker, and a young mother to a newborn—Lardydell strived for more. She made it her goal to start moving towards a better future for herself and her child. Her plans and goals were in place, but she was still unsure where to begin. She knew she enjoyed helping people and often thought about a career in the healthcare industry. She started her career path with going to WorkOne. As a result, she was enrolled in the Out-of-School Youth Program. Lardydell worked with staff in the program to take the first steps towards her healthcare career by attending workshops that strengthened her job searching and interviewing skills. In addition to attending the workshops, she received math remediation to improve her math skills. Lardydell’s preparation and hard work paid off as staff assisted her in ob-taining a Work Experience at Hammond-Whiting Care Center. After her Work Experience was complete she was sent into the C.N.A program for training to obtain her C.N.A. license. She currently works as a CNA at TC Quality Staffing, continues gaining experience as a C.N.A for now until she is able to continue on with attending nursing school to pursue her dream of becoming a Registered Nurse in the pediatric unit.

Training opporTuniTyAs a teen mom, CECiLia tERRazaS, dropped out of high school after her freshman year and began

working at a local café shop earning minimum wage. She knew her dreams would be put on hold as she took full responsibility of being a mom. She was set on one day getting her High School Equivalency (HSE) Diploma to show her children that no matter what, it is never too late to continue your education and fulfill your dreams. Terrazas came to the Jasper County-Rensselaer Adult Learning Center for information to get her HSE when she found out about the youth program. After enrolling in the program, she met with WorkOne staff to complete assessments to help her explore her career options. She soon realized her career interests were in the medical and dental fields. WorkOne staff helped Terrazas secure a Work Experi-ence at a local dentist’s office where she completed 300 hours of work. Her confidence grew as a re-sult and she decided it was time to prepare to get her HSE. She took HSE preparation classes at the Adult Learning Center. Once Terrazas was prepared, she took the test and passed. After having earned her HSE, she immediately went back to WorkOne to begin her search for employment. Terrazas found part-time employment as a Patient Access Representative at Franciscan Health in Rensselaer. Within two weeks she was promoted to full-time with benefits. She feels she has landed a great job and is thankful for the positive impact this opportunity has made on her and her family’s life.

KEitH WiLSOn is a Navy Veteran who spent most of his career overseas. He moved back to the U.S. and after getting his family settled, he found himself searching for a career. He came to WorkOne

for career assistance to transition from his life overseas. While his interest remained in manufacturing, his credentials did not transfer over. This created a skills gap for him that needed to be filled in order to move forward. Wilson soon realized that going to WorkOne was the first step he needed to help him regain his career. As a veteran, Wilson enrolled in the Operation: Job Ready Veterans (OJRV) free seminar that helps veterans succeed in employment. He felt as though he regained the confidence he needed to re-enter the job market. He learned how to tailor his resume to fit the position he was applying for, and practiced his interviewing skills through mock interview sessions. Wilson then enrolled in a Certified Production Technician (CPT) training course to close his skills gap. Upon graduation of the training course, Wilson applied to open positions at multiple manufacturing companies. He was first offered a position directly after CPT training, but after continuing his search, a better opportunity presented itself. Wilson is now the leader in a continuous improvement Six Sigma program for quality control and safety at Maax USA Corporation. This program is new to the company and Wilson is thrilled to be a part of it.
