SUPERBOWL THOUGHTS

Jesus’ mission to go out and preach was to impact all those who encounter him; so as a nation, we have been impacted by one sport that takes over today. As Chris-tians our mission is to be preachers, by word and exam-ple, of the Gospel; and once the Gospel has its hold on us, we can then be like Peter’s mother-in-law. Remem-ber when she was cured of her fever, she immediately got up to serve others. Service in our church is often called diaconate, which is the mission of the Deacon to serve in the name of God. We are all to be modern day deacons of the church. In our time of trouble, may we not have broken hearts if our team doesn’t do well, but turn in trust to the Lord. Sometimes just like the Patri-ots, the Lord takes time.

A possible Superbowl thought and prayer: When God answers my prayers, sometimes He says, “Yes,” sometimes He says “No,” and sometimes He

says “You’ve got to be kidding!”

January … Students will be collecting Birthday games,

The Confirmation class, during

their religious education classes,

routinely hears about acts of

charity as part of the mission of

the Catholic Church. They

expressed a desire to put their faith into action by doing more

about the plight of the homeless in this country, state and local

community. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban

Development (HUD) reported that 553,742 persons experienced

homelessness on a single night in 2017, an increase of 0.7

percent since 2015. That’s almost 16 times greater than the city

of Torrington’s population. As part of a group community

service project, the tenth grade Confirmation class of St. Thomas

of Villanova Church in Goshen, CT wanted to do something

about those who have no place to call home. The students will

be provided with simple meals simulating the types of food any

homeless shelter would provide. (The meal does not come with

menu options!) Each student must also spend the night sleeping

in a self-fabricated cardboard shelter.The “25-Hour “Homeless

Mission” will begin on Friday, March 9th 2018 at 4:30 PM and

conclude on Saturday, March 10th 2018 at 5:30 PM. Those who

wish to offer donations or assistance to this cause can be

arranged by calling St. Thomas Rectory at (860) 491-2756.
