Prof Andrew Clennel Palmer will retire on 30 Jun 2015. We thank him for his contributions to our department, and we wish him continued success in his future endeavours.
Prof Palmer has 45 years’ experience in the offshore industry, roughly equally divided between engineering practice and university teaching and research. He took his BA at Cambridge University and his PhD at Brown University in the US, and returned to the UK, first at Liverpool and then at Cambridge. He became interested in petroleum in 1970, first with a potential problem with the Alaska pipeline and
then with a series of projects in the North Sea. He took the opportunity to escape from university work, and in 1975 joined R.J. Brown and Associates, a leading consultant in marine pipelines, and latterly became Vice-President Engineering. In 1985 he founded his own consulting company, Bold Island Engineering, which grew to employ 55 people. Having sold the company, he returned to Cambridge as Research Professor of Petroleum Engineering.
Prof Palmer is a Fellow of the Royal Society, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He has written five books and more than 250 papers.
Asked what he will do next, Andrew Palmer replied: “I’m certainly not going to stop work. I intend to devote my time to consulting, being an expert witness, writing, cooking and blowing glass - as opportunities arise”.
Ms Susan Chia, Laboratory Technologist has spent 28 years with NUS. We would like to thank her for her valuable contributions towards laboratory management, safety and operations at TLab. She has been a conscientious worker, dedicated in her support role in ensuring our students and researchers work safely in the laboratories. She is one of the unsung heroes we have in the CEE family. It has been great working with Susan. I'm sure many staff members would echo my sentiments.
Susan will embark on her new journey of yoga practice and teaching yoga freelance. She hopes to be an inspiration to her yogi students and ignite the same passion she has with yoga; Promoting active aging and healthy body, mind and soul. We wish her all the very best as she pursues what she loves. Do stay in touch!
RETIREMENT
GOOD BYE SUSAN

Innovative Teaching Award AY2012/13
Dr Kuang Sze Chiang, Kevin (Gold), CEE, Faculty of Engineering
"Real learning begins when a desire or
interest is sparked within oneself. This
naturally leads to the directing of one's
attention to seek a deeper knowledge and
understanding of the subject. The role of the
teacher then is to help sustain, grow and
ignite that interest in the student. Instead of
the teacher "pushing" knowledge, the
average student needs to be engaged and
inspired to do the "pulling".
Dr Kevin Kuang receiving his award from Prof Chua Kee Chaing (Dean, Engineering)
Assoc Prof Meng Qiang has been appointed as Dean’s Chair in recognition of his outstanding and impactful scholarly accomplishments with effect from 1 April 2015.
Dr Darren Chian has been placed in the Honours List for the Faculty Teaching Award for AY2013/2014. Our colleagues Dr Goh Siang Huat, Prof Koh Chan Ghee, Dr Raymond Ong, Prof Ong Say Leong and Dr Poh Leong Hien
have been placed in the Commendation List. Prof Choo Yoo Sang has been awarded the 8th recipient of the Kurobane Award and hence as the Kurobane Lecturer at the 15th International Symposium on Tubular Structures. This single Keynote Address will open the symposium, on May 27, 2015, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Prof Tan Kiang Hwee has been appointed as a Concurrent Professor on an honorary basis by Northeastern University, China, for a period of five years from 20 Jan 2015. Dr Chua Pei Wen Vivien was awarded the MIT Technology Review Innovators Under 35 (TR35) Asia Pacific 2014 award on 20 Nov 2014. Prof Fwa Tien Fang received the Distinguished Award of the Minister Innovation Award 2014 in Nov 2014 by the Ministry of Transport, Singapore. Awarded for the achievement in the NUS-LTA joint research project “Steel Slag for Green and Sustainable Road Pavement”. The project developed two new asphalt mix designs to achieve the multiple objectives of preserving natural resources, reducing road traffic noise, and improving wet-weather driving safety. The two new mix designs have been designated by the Land Transport Authority as standard mix designs W13P and W16P for road pavement construction in Singapore.
