Ron RobisonCommissionerWestern Hockey League

Greetings from the WHL

A Welcome from the President

Welcome back to another exciting year of Kootenay ICE Hockey. With the way the Hockey Club finished last year the 2013-2014 season has the potential to be very special. Mirrored in last place at Christmas, the Club posted the fifth best record in the WHL in the second half of the season and made the playoffs for a 15th straight year, while finishing with a .500 or better record for a 14th consecutive season (which are both the longest active streaks in the WHL).

Our organization has been very fortunate since moving to Cranbrook to enjoy an unparalleled amount of on ice success. This year for the first time in franchise history one of our players has the potential to be the first overall selection in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. With that comes added pressure to perform, but with reigning WHL Coach of the Year, Ryan McGill leading our team, Sam Reinhart and the rest of the players will receive the necessary guidance and leadership in achieving all of their goals.

With the invaluable experience our team gained last season, we expect our returning players along with our new prospects to once again battle for contention in the very competitive Eastern Conference. Our expectations of success both on and off the ice will not change. Our fans have come to expect a team that is hard working on the ice and ambassadors for Cranbrook and the entire East Kootenay region off the ice.

On behalf of the entire organization, welcome back and I hope you enjoy the game.

Jeff Chynoweth, President & Governor

TONIGHT’S OPPONENTThe Saskatoon Blades hit the road for two games in two nights, beginning tonight against the Kootenay Ice. The Blades are coming off of a 4-1 weekend loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings. After a scoreless first period, Brandon got a pair of goals to take a 2-0 lead in the second. A Cameron Hebig goal at 8:53 of the third cut the lead in half, but Brandon would score twice less than two minutes apart in the final 10 minutes to seal the win. Jordan Papirny was the first star, taking the win with a 33-save perfor-mance. On special teams the Blades were 0 for 5 on the PP and gave up two PP goals on 9 shorthanded opportunities. 2013-14 Season SeriesTonight’s game is the third of the season between the Blades and Ice, with the teams splitting the first two games of the 2013-14 season. The season series has shaped up as follows:October 18th - Blades 4 - Ice 2 - Nick Zajac and Collin Valcourt each had 1G, 1A. Troy Trombley made 38 saves.November 16th - Ice 6 - Blades 1 - Nikita Scherbak had the lone Blades goal. Troy Trombley made 36 saves.February 4th - February 28th - Scherbak On The MendThe Saskatoon Blades continue to be without leading scorer Nikita Scherbak, who hasn’t made the trip west with the team for the next two games against the Ice and Hurricanes. Scherbak is out with an upper body injury, suffered late in the game last Wednes-day night when he was driven hard into the ice by Cougars forward Aaron Macklin. Scherbak was riding a 5-game point streak at the time of the injury and leads the team and WHL rookies in scoring with 25 goals and 39 assists for 64 points.

Approaching 300 Tonight’s game marks the 299th career WHL regular season game for Blades leading defensive scorer Dylan Busenius. The Sherwood Park product and alternate captain has accumulated those games with the Blades, the Prince Albert Raiders and the Medicine Hat Tigers. To go along with his 298 regular season games, Busenius is also a veteran of 27 WHL postseason games. Busenius has provided a big boost to the Blades blueline, posting a goal and 8 points in 15 games with Saskatoon.

Injury List GrowingThe Saskatoon Blades can add defenceman Ross Hnidy to the team’s growing injury list. Hnidy was hurt on Saturday night in the game against the Brandon Wheat Kings. The blueliner joins the list that includes goaltender Alex Moodie (lower body), lead-ing scorer Nikita Scherbak (upper body) and alternate captain Nelson Nogier (upper body). To help fill some of the holes created by injury, the Blades have recalled goaltender Brandon Kegler. The 1997-born player was a 4th round selection by the Saskatoon Blades in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft.
