That said, the cry of distress is a cry that demands some response. We see how Jesus responds when sick people came to Him and He healed them. He does not debate the meaning of suffering, but simply stretches out His hand and heals. Of course we cannot make illness go away with a simple blessing or a touch of the hand, as He could. But we can respond, and we can help to ease the suffering. We can let Christ Himself act through us to ease the loneliness, care for people in need, and comfort those who are anxious or heartbroken. We can help the suffering, the frustrated, the depressed know that there is still more goodness, more love, more hope surrounding them than perhaps they can see at that moment. We can help by reminding them that God is a God of love and will never cause pain and suffering. We can can assure them they are not alone. Today’s Scripture challenges us to listen and to share. We are to follow Jesus not only in our happy times but also in times of loneliness, and even of tragedy. Let the Lord use us to reach out in love and somehow bless those who are worried, sick or depressed. REFLECTING WITH THE PASTOR HOLY DAY AND ASH WEDNESDAY MASSES I have been consistently approached by parishioners wondering if we can have a noon Mass on Holy Days instead of the 6:30am Mass. Ash Wednesday is the first time to see if shifting the Mass time would better serve the community. We will try this slight shift in Mass times for the next few Holy Days to see if more people are able to attend at noon instead of the early morning. A final decision will be made by the Worship commission after we have more data and input from parishioners. As we prepare to begin the season of Lent, please plan on joining us at our liturgies. The Mass times will be: 8:15am, 12 Noon, 5:00pm and 7:00pm. May God continue to bless us and transform us into His holy people. - Fr. Bob

FEBRUARY 4, 2018THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU WRESTLED WITH GOD?

It’s an old story. Life isn’t fair. Things have changed and we think everything is now going to fall apart. We’re far removed from Job in time, but maybe not so far from his experience. The human condition can still suffer “the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.” Through Hamlet, Shakespeare lists various things that can make life miserable. “For who would bear the whips and scorns of time, The oppressor’s wrong, the proud man’s contumely, The pangs of despised love, the law’s delay, The insolence of office and the scorn that patient merit of the unworthy takes?” Only a total hermit could avoid seeing the pain and misery around us. We hear of marriages heading for the rocks, people with nervous breakdowns, teenagers at odds with their parents, the threat of vandalism and violence in our cities. At times it seems that the world in which we live is full of immorality, injustice, exploitation. Like many of the characters in the Book of Job, we find ourselves wrestling with “a sadistic God.”

What might a Christian say to Job, or to people who reject the idea of a good and wise God? What can we say to those who suffer in our time? There is no easy answer to take away their pain. Maybe in dire situations it is not our task to speak at all, but to listen.

We can help the suffering, the frustrated, the depressed know that there is still more goodness, more love, more hope surrounding them than perhaps they can see at that

moment.

HOLY DAY AND ASH WEDNESDAY MASSES

I have been consistently approached by parishioners wondering if we can have a noon Mass on Holy Days instead of the 6:30am Mass. - Fr. Bob

“FAST FACTS” FROM OUR GLOBAL FAMILY MINISTRY

While the majority of the worldwide 65.3 million forced migrants remain in their home countries, 21.3 million have been forced to flee and seek refuge in other countries. Over half of these refugees are under the age of 18.www.stsusanna.org/ourglobalfamily.

Young at Heart February meeting is scheduled for the 21st at 12:00 noon in the St. Susanna Room. Our program will be presented by the Cincinnati Museum Center. The title of the program is “Cincinnati and the Presidents.”

Reservations and the $12.00 per lunch are due in the parish office no later than Friday, February 16. Be sure to have the correct change or to mark “YAH lunch” on the memo line of your check. How well do you listen? Do you find yourself finishing other people’s sentences? Do you interrupt with frequent comments or questions? Do you tend to contradict what has been said? If you

answered “sometimes” or “frequently” to any of these questions, you may benefit from the Listening for Heaven’s Sake class. Learn some practical tools that will refresh you and those you relate to.

STUFF.

Is your car parked in your driveway because your garage is full of “stuff”? Is your basement crammed with boxes and bags of “stuff” just to get it out of sight and which you plan to get to later and “later” never comes? Consider this: St. Susanna Women’s Association has scheduled the annual Garage Sale for June 22/23, 2018. Now would be a good time to start eliminating some of that “stuff” that is clogging up your life.

Keep in mind that all monies raised from the Garage Sale come back to the Parish – to purchase special items and to assist with Parish ministries. If you are unable or unwilling to hold your items till June, there are members of the Women’s Association who are willing to accept your items to store until then. If necessary, they would even consider pick-ups. Contact Christine Phelan at 513-492-7265 or [email protected].

The St. Susanna Young at Heart is going to be wagering atKeeneland on April 19th. For $60 per person, you get bus transportation, reserved seating in the Grandstand, and lunch in route. We will depart at 9:00am, return at 6:30pm. If interested, place a separate envelope in the Sunday collection with your check marked on the memo line “Keeneland.” Limited to 40 total. Questions: contact Russ Clark at 339-0711.

IT’S KAIROS TIME

Matthew 25:40 Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.

The next Kairos retreat at Lebanon Correctional Institution will be March 8-11, 2018 and your help is being asked for again. Baking cookies always seems to be the most popular way of helping. Bags and instructions for the cookies will be handed out after all Masses on February 17th and 18th. Please plan on dropping them off at the church on March 3-4 or at the office until March 7. If you can help financially, the cost of a weekend is around $7,000.00, which is covered by contributions only. To sponsor an inmate is $125, which covers his meals for the weekend, and his Bible and cross. Any and all contributions are greatly appreciated and tax exempt. Also, there will be a prayer sign-up sheet at the Peace and Justice desk, where you can offer an hour of prayer during the weekend. Just sign your name on the time slot that you are willing to stay in prayer for. In advance, thank you for your help with this prison ministry. If you would be interested in attending a closing ceremony at LECI on Sunday, March 11th, let me know. “Dead Serious... About Life” is a musical written to appeal to teenagers. Well, hang onto your seat, ‘cause this musical cuts it wide open. It will make you laugh, cry, hurt, fear and feel... but most of all “Dead Serious” will make you take a second look at life.

2018 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL (CMA)

This is Commitment Weekend for the 2018 Catholic Ministries Appeal. Please join with Catholics in every parish throughout our archdiocese who are Impacting the Story through local, Catholic ministries for people right here in our communities. These ministries depend on our help each year!

If you have already responded by mail or online, or if you brought your completed pledge card to place in the offertory today, thank you! To make a gift online, visit CatholicAppeal.net. Thank you!

CHILDREN’S ENVELOPES FOR 2018 ARE AVAILABLE

Stewardship is not just for adults. It is so important that our children learn how much they have been blessed by God and how much God longs to see them share their blessings with others. Indeed, stewardship is a wonderful way of life for all of us. Sharing a little can mean a lot. One of the best ways to teach children about giving to others is to offer them the opportunity to place their own contribution envelope in the collection basket each week. Please consider using children’s envelopes in your family this year. Boxes are in the Gathering Space.

Offering the Gospel to All

I f you asked Jesus what he did while on earth, I believe he would say, “preached and healed.”

Those were his missions. He had good news to share and a longing to convince his listeners of the truth of this gospel of love and freedom. He was moved because he saw them like sheep without a shepherd. The gospels are nothing other than documentation of Jesus’ efforts to preach the gospel!

Paul shared Christ’s ardor. He was entrusted with preaching to the Gentiles the truth of the Gospel, and he did all he could to convince them of his message. He says he became all things to all, to save at least some. He worked hard during the day so he could pay his own way and offer his message for free. He adapted himself to his audience—their customs and ways of thinking—so they wouldn’t take offense at him, closing their hearts to his message.

How many missionaries have used this same approach? Just think of the French Jesuits Sts. Jean de Brébeuf and Isaac Jogues of the Great Lakes region, St. Junípero Serra in the West, or Mother Cabrini serving European

[Jesus said,] “Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.”

(Mark 1:38)

immigrants on the East Coast. They learned new languages, ate new foods, and adopted new traditions to insert themselves into these cultures and share the gospel. They took a page out of Paul’s book, becoming all things to all to save at least some.

We are modern-day apostles and missionaries. Let’s take a page out of Paul’s book, and offer this gospel of hope and love to so many souls in need.

—Fr. Mark Haydu, LC

For ReflectionWhen you look around, what needs for the gospel of love do you see?Which of these needs can you fill as Jesus’ apostle?
