St. Blaise Every six to seven years, the throat blessing associated with St. Blaise falls on a Sunday. This is one of those years. The St. Blaise blessing is traditionally accommodated with crossed candles held under a person's throat with the prayer recited by a priest, deacon, or lay minister. The "Order of Prayer in the Liturgy of the Hours and Celebration of the Eucharist" utilized by the Archdiocese of Chicago and the Dioceses of Joliet and Rockford allows for the Blessing to be recited (without the use of crossed candles) in place of the final Blessing at Mass (for pastoral reasons). With Masses occurring every 90 minutes at Saints Peter and Paul on Satur-day evening and Sunday morning, I do not believe we could accommodate the individual Blessing of throats with-out causing real parking difficulties for those arriving for the next Mass. The "individual Blessing" of throats takes far longer than the distribution of Holy Eucharist. Understanding that, for pastoral reasons, the Blessing of St. Blaise will be offered communally at the conclusion of our weekend Masses (without crossed candles) in place of the final Blessing at Mass.

"Light the Way" I was moved by the support our community extended to our annual "Light the Way" event which was held this past December 6th. "Waterleaf" was designated as the recipient of this year's net proceeds of "Light the Way". The December 6th event generated $75,000, and a check in that amount was recently presented to Waterleaf. This significant donation will assist Waterleaf in their campaign to build a new clinic in Aurora, a Beacon of Hope, for women and men facing unintended pregnancies. I extend my appreciation to Ray Jones, the “Light the Way” Committee, the St. Patrick’s Residence Development Staff, and to those who supported the evening through their attendance, sponsorships, and/or auction donations.

The "Queen of Hearts" Raffle is here! After months of preparation, the Advancement Board of Saints Peter and Paul School has been green lighted to embark upon what has the potential to be the largest fundraiser in the 166 year history of our grade school. Tickets for the Queen of Hearts raffle, which are $5 each, will only be sold at Quigley's in downtown Naperville on Thursdays and Fridays from 4:00 to 8:00pm and Saturdays from 11:30am to 3:45pm. Queen of Hearts raffle tick-ets will begin being sold on Valentine's Day, Thursday, February 14th. Drawings will be held on most Saturdays, with the first drawing on Saturday, March 2nd at 4pm. The holder of the ticket drawn need not be present. The Queen of Hearts is a progressive raffle that will carry over until the Queen of Hearts is revealed on the game board. The ticket holder who reveals the Queen of Hearts will split the total prize 50/50 with Saints Peter and Paul School. Further information on the Saints Peter and Paul Grade School Queen of Hearts raffle and its rules can be obtained on our parish and grade school websites. A big "Thank you" to the good folks at Quigley's for hosting our Queen of Hearts raffle. In the Peace of Christ,

Fr. Brad

‘For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authori es, against the powers of this dark

world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.’

~Ephesians 6:12 We Need Your Help! Please prayer fully consider joining our Saints Peter and Paul volunteers to offer an hour of prayerful witness outside of Planned Parenthood on Friday, February 15th. We have volunteers in one-hour shifts from 7am-2pm every third Friday. Your prayers on the side-walk outside this abortion clinic help support the efforts of pro-life sidewalk counselors to offer abortion-bound moth-ers the help they need to choose life. Your prayers help open those women’s hearts to life. They may even help con-vert those working in the abortion clinic. Pray in whatever fashion suits you—Scripture reading, the Rosary, interior prayer, hymns, etc., but pray quietly, to be heard by God and His angels, not passersby. Offer prayers for the abortion-bound women in the clinic. Pray for their babies. Pray for the clinic staff to be converted. Pray for any pro-life counselors who are there. If you see a specific woman entering the clinic, pray for her and whoever has brought her to the clinic that day. Please call Jane Fonner at 630-851-8433 or email her at [email protected] for more information, or to let her know you are available this month. We can all call upon God to grant us power over the evil of abortion.

We will be meeting on Wednesday, February 13th, at 10:00am in the St. Paul Center to make prayer shawls for our parishioners who are sick or going through difficult times. If you know someone who would like a prayer shawl to keep them warm, especially in this cold weather, we would be happy to wrap one up for them. For more information, call Paulette at 630-718-2127.

Cold Weather Safety During this cold weather, please check on friends and neighbors that may need a little help this winter. It may be picking up a few items from the grocery store, checking their thermostat to make sure it’s working, or shoveling their walkway. We can all help by just making a phone call. If you know of anyone who needs a well-being check because they live alone or their family lives out of state, we would be happy to visit them. Call Paulette Shea at 630-718-2127 or email [email protected] or Deacon Joe at 630-718-2155 or [email protected].

Conference for the Divorced and Widowed March 16, 2019 The Office of Family Ministry of the Diocese of Joliet is pleased to offer a day of encouragement and sup-port for those who are divorced or widowed. This year’s conference will focus upon Six Keys to Healing and God’s Plan for Y our Life.

Speaker of the day is Catholic author Lisa Duffy. A relationship and divorce recovery expert, she experienced the tragedy of an unwanted divorce in the early 1990s. Lisa has nearly 20 years of personal experience helping people rebuild their lives after the loss of a spouse. She is the author of a number of books, including Mending The Heart and A Road to Healing. The conference begins with an 8:30am check-in at the Joliet Diocesan Blanchette Catholic Center in Crest Hill, and con-cludes with a Vigil Mass at 4:00pm. The suggested $35 donation includes morning coffee and refreshments, lunch, and materials. Please register by March 9th by calling the Office of Family Ministry at 815-838-5334.

Catholic Schools Week January 27th - February 2nd

As we started the week, Principal Karen Meskill kicked off the announce-ments to the students with these comments, “This week, we join all Catholic Schools around the country, to celebrate the gift of Catholic education. We are so blessed to be able to have God as the center of all we do at Saints Peter and Paul.” Our schools theme this year was H.E.A.R.T.- Honoring Everyone’s Amazing Reality Today and Tomorrow. Even though the weather got in the way of some plans, we were still able to celebrate this special week with activities such as Spirit Day, 80s Night, no homework day, extended lunch and recess day, and a school-wide rosary.

Breakfast with Bishop Conlon

Each year, as a pre-celebration for Catholic Schools Week, there is a prayer service and special breakfast which is hosted by the Uni- versity of St. Francis in Joliet. On January 17th, one student from each of Diocese of Joliet schools was invited to attend this special event with Bishop R. Daniel Conlon. Our 2nd grade student, Gabrielle, is pictured here with Bishop Conlon.

Chess Championship

Pictured here is one of our 4th grade students who competed in the 2019 Illinois Catholic Schools Chess Championship at SS Cyril Methodius School in Lemont. He won 2nd place in the 4-5th grade division. Congratulations Alex!

Fr. Robert Spitzer, SJ, a highly renowned philosopher and the founder of the Magis Center, provides a truly enlightening and practical discussion on how to achieve deep and enduring happiness. Referencing the wisdom of the ages, including that of Aristotle and Plato, this talk provides the keys to achieving the universal desire for happiness given to every person by God himself. I found this talk to be so insightful on how to achieve the highest levels of happiness. Alex - Plainfield, IL This talk really helped me to understand that the great-est happiness is found when we focus on doing the Lord's work and not on ourselves. Mary - Poplar Grove, IL

NEWS FROM THE KNIGHTS

Saint Vincent de Paul

Vincentians help with the immediate need for food, rent or shelter, utility bills, furniture, clothing, and medical care. And Vincentians also think about the systemic needs—the underlying root cause of a person’s prob-lems: language problems, job skills deficit, low self-esteem, not knowing how to run a household, lack of skills in caring for children, drug and alcohol addictions. Indeed, Vincentians embrace both systemic and imme-diate needs as part of their ministry and that humbles and inspires us to discernment and prayer.

Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of Saint

Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who

are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint

Vincent de Paul. Would you like to learn more or are you in need of assistance? If so, call: 630-718-2127.

Saints Peter and Paul has many volunteer opportunities throughout the year. Please contact the Parish Office at 630-355-1081 and we will be happy to find the perfect one for you.

Transitional Housing Ministry

The Transitional Housing Ministry currently supports four homeless families including four single adult women and a total of nine children. *Names that are bolded are newly added this week*

We wish to offer our sympathy and a promise of our prayers to family and friends on the deaths of:

Robert Liautaud, George Munson, Darrell Zolezzi

In your hands, O Lord, we humbly entrust our brothers and sisters. In this life you embraced them with your tender love; deliver them now from every evil and bid them eternal rest. The old order has passed away: welcome them into paradise, where there will be no sorrow, no weeping or pain, but fullness of peace and joy with your Son and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen

St. Francis Chapel of Eucharistic Adoration Flame of Faith Candles

Six candles burn perpetually around the Blessed Sacrament in our St. Francis Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. The burning candles serve as a constant prayer before the Lord, present in the Blessed Sacrament. Envelopes for you to have your intention remembered with one of these candles and prayed for ONE WEEK (Sunday to Sunday) are available in the Adoration Chapel. The intentions will be published in the bulletin.

Flame of Faith Intentions for This Week The seven-day Devotional Candles at the altar of our Lord in the Saint Francis Adoration Chapel are being offered for: 1. For SSPP parish. 2. For the unborn babies of DeYoung and Langel families. 3. For vocations to the priesthood, holy matrimony and consecrated life. 4. For Marty on his journey. 5. For Fr. Brad. 6. For the complete healing of Frank.

Sunday 8am Thursday 1am Sunday 4pm Thursday 2am Sunday 5pm Friday 12am Monday 1am Friday 7am Tuesday 2am Friday 10am Wednesday 9pm Saturday 10am

COME AND ADORE HIM IN THE MOST HOLY SACRAMENT...

Visit our Saint Francis Adoration Chapel - Open 24/7

Sit quietly and just “be” in the presence of God. Think of a visit to the Blessed Sacrament as coming to see your best friend. Instead of talking to the Lord, try listening to what He wants to tell you.

EVENING PRAYER AND BENEDICTION

Please join us for Evening Prayer (Vespers) and Benediction, held every Thursday at 6:00pm in the St. Francis Adoration Chapel.

Rosary

Come pray with us on Tuesday evenings

in the Church beginning at 7:30pm.

With our Rosaries, we will ask Our Lady to intercede for our Holy Father’s special intention of the month, as well as for our own intentions, and for world peace without the threat of terrorism. If there is a special intention that you would like to have remembered during the weekly Rosary, please email [email protected] or come to the Tuesday Rosary to add your intention.

Legion of Mary

Become acquainted with the Legion of Mary by joining us on Tuesday eve-nings at 6:00pm in Room 227 in the Ministry Center in the spirit of faith

and in union with our Blessed Virgin Mary. The Legion of Mary is the largest lay apostolic associa-tion of Catholics worldwide who serve the Church by visiting the sick and homebound and by performing many works of promoting our Catholic faith. We pray to Jesus through Mary. Contact Judy Vissepo at 630-245-3171 or Paulette Shea at 630-718-2127 with any questions.
