Catholic Communication

Campaign Collection The CCC (Catholic Communication Cam-paign) fund supports projects as diverse as television, radio, social media, pod-casts, and print media to more effectively use technology and media in spreading the gospel message. Through grants funded by the CCC, more people are hearing about and joining in faith, wor-ship, and witness.

Pope Francis’s visit to the United States last year was a historic mo-ment in the life of the Catholic Church. The Catholic bishops of the United States wanted to make sure that everyone could join in on the excitement of the visit, and they called on the Catholic Communica-tion Campaign (CCC) to make that possible. CCC funds enabled live streaming, News Service coverage, & social media efforts of the historic events of Pope Francis’s visit to the U.S.

Welcome Deacon Ron Lorilla who is a transitional deacon (preparing for ordi-nation to the Priesthood next spring) assigned to us by Bishop Paprocki for his final academic year at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary in St. Louis. Deacon Ron is with us this summer and will continue with weekend duties during the school year…an easy commute to the seminary and good pastoral experience at SSPP. Please welcome him and pray for him during this very formative year of his ministerial life.

The Feast of the Most Holy Trinity (last Sunday) celebrated the wonder of God’s love for all mankind coming from the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Jesus revealed the Father to us in his loving and caring ministry…as Pope Francis has said ‘Jesus is the face of the Father’s mercy’. So we see in Jesus the Father… ‘If you have seen me, you have seen the Father’. But Jesus promises another gift from the Father to help his disciples and guide them in their mission (which includes us also).

Jesus promised another Advocate to teach his disciples and remind them of all that he had taught them. Through the gift of the Advocate/Paraclete, which we know as the Holy Spirit, the Risen Lord Jesus is made present to the disciples. Jesus is being revealed to the disciples by the Holy Spirit… ‘He will lead you to all truth’. Jesus’ ministry along with the whole of his passion, death and resur-rection are being interpreted to the disciples so that they can be Jesus’ wit-nesses to the world. They are being formed and informed by the Holy Spirit to understand and carry out their mission…witnessing to Jesus and preaching the Good News of salvation to all peoples.

Since the disciples have gone through this ‘formation’ process which took some time…so we realize that we too need time for formation by the Holy Spir-it to carry-out our mission to the world. We are to be the visible presence of God to others to help them come to know and believe in the Lord Jesus so they may have life…eternal life!

This Sunday has been called ‘Corpus Christi’ which is the Latin phrase mean-ing ‘The Body of Christ’. But the title has been changed to ‘The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ’. The feast developed during the early middle ages when there were great arguments about the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. The celebration was to help joyfully proclaim Christ tru-ly present under the sacramental ‘sign’ of bread…and that is who we receive…the whole Christ.

We celebrate at the command of the Lord Jesus… ‘Do this in memory of me’…the great mystery of the Holy Eucharist. This Eucharist is the ‘source and sum-mit’ of our Christian prayer…it is the essence of our Christian life. The Eucha-rist prepares and strengthens us to live the life of Christ for others…as Jesus taught us… ‘I have come not to be served, but to serve’ and again at the Last Supper… ‘I have given you an example…As I have done so must you do’. We are sent into the world with and in the love of Christ.

Congratulations and all the best…to Ellen Bednara who retired as Parish Sec-retary last week. Ellen preferred a quiet celebration with the staff which we did at lunch on Tuesday. We join in thanking her for these 26 years of service…and ask God to bless her with a wonderful and enjoyable retirement!

Parish Picnic…is coming very soon…Friday & Saturday June 24-25th

. We need your help…sign up on-line at the Parish Website.

Memorial Day Mass…will be Monday, May 30th at 9 AM in SSPP Cemetery

(unless it rains). We will also dedicate and bless the columbarium during that celebration…reception follows.

Congratulations…to the Fr. McGivney graduates and the whole school & staff! Second collection today…is for Catholic Communications.

ADOPT-A-CLASS

If you or your company would like to adopt a Class or give a donation to the Library, Art, Chorus, Band Program, or the Computer Lab at SS. Peter & Paul School. Please contact the school office at 344-5450. You can donate any amount to any teacher. The donation is used specifically by that class or teacher.

Summer Office Hours The school office will begin summer hours on May 19th. Monday through Fri-day 9:00am to noon. The office will be closed on June 24th and July 29th. Outside of office hours please call 344-5450, Ext.201 and leave a message or send a Fast Direct to LouAnne. The School Office will be closed May 30 in ob-servation of Memorial Day. Principal’s Notes: We received word that we will not be able to offer sports physicals this year. Remember that all students have to have a current sports physical to begin practice. Students that need a school physical (K and 6th) do not need a sports physical. Don’t forget to sign up to work a shift at the SSPP Picnic. I would like to en-courage all of our school families to get involved. Remember that the parish gives each family a monetary subsidy to cover the cost to educate our stu-dents. The Picnic Committee has worked very hard to make this event more family centered. It should be lots of fun.

ZIGGY’S WISDOM: Let’s talk about advice, when to take it, when not to.

ZIGGY’S THOUGHTS:

Consider the person giving it . Are they “level headed” and show com-mon sense in ways that you have experienced? Then, listen to them and act accordingly if you doubt your own judgment in the situation at hand. “It’s all a gift”, life that is!

THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

Give Them Some Food Yourselves

The Gospel for this feast reminds me of what my aunt used to tell us when we would visit her and share a meal. Her favorite saying was, "If you don't get enough to eat, it's your own fault." Perhaps Jesus would say the same as he feeds us with his Body and Blood.

Some say that the multiplication of loaves was not done by breaking the laws of physics. Instead, they say that Jesus, when he began to share the little bread that he had, touched the hearts of all those who had brought food with them. They fol-lowed his example by sharing their food also--so much that there were twelve baskets left over.

Jesus came to change people's hearts, to show them God's love and how to love one another. The miracle of changing bread and wine into his Body and Blood is not just so we can feel good about having Jesus so near to us. It is meant to strengthen us to do our best as his disciples. As food and drink help us to keep on working, his Body and Blood help us to keep on loving.

When the disciples told Jesus about the hungry crowd, he told them, "Give them some food your-selves" (Luke 9:13). And one day they would. When they celebrated the Eucharist after Jesus' resurrec-tion, they gave that spiritual food to the new followers of Christ. We con-tinue that today. With Jesus' strength we can teach all people about the Father's love for them and how they can love each other. Tom Schmidt

Parish Ministries Extend Activities to Celebrate Year of Mercy We continue to look at our parish ministries which are focus-

ing on the Works of Mercy and enhancing their ongoing ac-

tivities as part of the Year of Mercy. We will feature their sto-

ries throughout the year.

The Power of One Idea: Answering God’s Call to Serve Every Thursday, the Ss. Peter and Paul Mending Ministry serves those attending the SOS Soup Kitchen at St. John’s Church by mending clothing. This new ministry was devel-oped by Judy Thompson. “I say the Jabez Prayer (which asks God to help you see how you can serve others) frequently,” Judy says. “I was watching a news report from New York about a man who rolled his sewing machine around the city and mended needy people’s clothing. I said, ‘I can do that.’” Trying to figure out how to do that in Collinsville was a chal-lenge. She thought about the Township Office (no room) and tried the Senior Center (not much activity). Then she thought of the SOS Soup Kitchen. Marty Wiegers and Rita Heimann joined Judy in the new ministry. The ministry is growing and people are volunteering to sup-port then in any ways that are needed. “You just need to listen for where God is calling you, recognize it, then just do it,” says Judy. The Corporal Works of Mercy

Clothe the Naked

The Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how

we should treat all oth-

ers, as if they were

Christ in disguise. They

"are charitable actions

by which we help our

neighbors in their bodily

needs" (USCCA). They

respond to the basic

needs of humanity as we

journey together

through this life.

The Prayer of

Jabez

And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying:

“Oh that You would

bless me indeed, And enlarge my territo-

ry, That Your hand would

be with me, And that You would keep me from evil,

That I may not cause pain.”

So God granted him what he requested.
