February 24, 2021 Dear TOUCH Sponsors and Donors, Greetings to all! We hope that spring is beginning to spring in your part of the world. After snow and ice storms here in Oregon, we are happily awaiting the arrival of daffodils and crocuses. THANK YOU FOR YOUR RENEWALS You have all been so wonderful about renewing your TOUCH donations and sponsorships. We are grateful for all 200 of you on the list at the end of this email update. Thank you! Don Prickel, a volunteer with the Corvallis Sister Cities Association (CSCA), has put in hours and hours making the sister city website more appealing and user friendly. This includes many improvements to the sections on The TOUCH Project. He has also simplified and clarified the donation mechanism to The TOUCH Project. As you know, all donations to TOUCH have to come through our non-profit entity, the Corvallis Sister Cities Association. Now when you donate or renew a sponsorship, you can fill out an online form which allows you to specifically designate where you want your donation to go. This information will come directly to us and the CSCA treasurer. You are also given the option of using a credit card or PayPal. We hope this effort by Don makes it easier for all. Special thanks to Don and, also, to Bill Francis, CSCA treasurer. Here’s how to donate: go to this link and look for the “Sponsor or Donate Today” button in the lower right-hand side of this page: https://sistercities.corvallis.or.us/the-touch-project/ TOUCH SPONSORS ARE THE BEST!! Sponsors and Donors to The TOUCH Project come forth in various ways. Many of you have shared the program with your relatives and friends. Many years ago, The TOUCH Project was featured on the National Public Radio (NPR) program entitled eTown and we received new sponsors from all over the US after that exposure. Others of you have been with TOUCH since the beginning when it was first presented at a gathering at the Majestic Theatre in Corvallis in 2000. But one of our favorite stories about someone becoming a sponsor was at the airport in Budapest. As we stood in line, we struck up a conversation with a woman named Diane Nasadiuk, from Canada, who had just finished a cruise down the Danube. She asked where we had traveled and we shared that we were coming from a sister city trip to Uzhhorod, Ukraine with The TOUCH Project. Diane then told us that her father, Michael was born in Toporiv, Ukraine, about 400 kms (250 miles) from Uzhhorod. He fled Ukraine in 1943 at the age of 20, when it was still part of the USSR. He made it to Belgium where he found a room in the home of a foreman of a coal mine. His new landlord found him work at the coal mine. The foreman of the coal mine had a beautiful daughter named Stella whom he fell in love with and married. She was 19 and he was 26. Diane's mom was fluent in French and wanted adventure so they hopped on a boat heading to Canada, believing that most Canadians were French-speaking instead of the majority who spoke English. They ended up in Toronto where very few people spoke French. They found lodging and work among other Ukrainian immigrants and, over the years, learned to speak English and raised a family. Diane shared, “My family spoke Ukrainian at home and attended Ukrainian church. We celebrated Ukrainian Christmas Eve on January 6th and on Ukrainian Easter we took our baskets to church to be blessed. On Saturday mornings I attended Ukrainian school.” Diane and her fellow Canadian cousin, Sandi Boodoo, are both sponsors in The TOUCH Project and have been for many years. Diane commented in a recent email, "I feel I am honoring my father's Ukrainian roots by helping the children in The TOUCH Project." Thank you, Diane and Sandi! We are grateful for that chance encounter with Diane in the check-in line at the Budapest, Hungary airport. We have such wonderful sponsors and donors. 1960- Diane with her brother, mother (Stella) and father (Michael).

THE COVID19 VIRUS IN UKRAINE Here are the most recent stats and current data on the rise in the virus in the Ukraine and the Transcarpathian Oblast during the last month. Our physician friends in Uzhhorod say that vaccinations have not been given in Uzhhorod yet, but they are hopeful for next month. The vaccines will likely come from India. In Ukraine: Coronavirus Cases: 1.17 million January 13, 2021 Deaths: 21,121 January 13, 2021 Coronavirus Cases: 1.35 million February 23, 2021 Deaths: 26,531 February 23, 2021 In Transcarpathia: Coronavirus Cases: 29,265 January 13, 2021 Deaths: 667 January 13, 2021 Coronavirus Cases: 37,427 February 23, 2021 Deaths: 840 February 23, 2021 PROGRAMS IN THE TOUCH PROJECT Here is some of the news gathered by Vasya Chubar, our TOUCH Interim Coordinator in Uzhhorod, about the five programs in The TOUCH Project and the children involved Pavlovo Farm Home: There are currently ten young women living at the farm. Four of the girls have regular jobs, although they have been somewhat sporadic with the COVID situation. One girl will soon be finishing high school this spring and another is receiving bakery training, while one is ready to take a qualification course after her seamstress training. “Papa” Vasyl continues to gain strength and his wife, “Mama” Maria, feels he is on his way to a full recovery. Here’s a photo of some of the young women celebrating Vasyl’s birthday with Maria and others at the farm.

Rehabilitation Center for Children with Disabilities, “Path of Life” Finally, the center is open for clients after a lockdown in January. At the moment, they work, play, study, and socialize on a regular basis. The children were super excited to be back attending the Center and spending time with teachers and among peers. It was a huge relief and support for their parents too. Dr. Iryna Roshkovych shared the following, “Following the lockdown, the staff continues to distribute the TOUCH sponsors' donation of $40 to the parents of children who participate at the Center.” She also shared some great news that Iryna and Dr. Oleg Kyrylenko had a very productive and promising meeting with the deputy mayor and representatives from the Department of Social Protection. Among other things, the topic of a supported living facility topic. According to Iryna, the officials are very enthusiastic and

Page 3: February 24, 2021 Dear TOUCH Sponsors and Donors, THANK

supportive about this proposal. You may be hearing more about this project which would provide one of the first “group home” type living situation for about 8 older youth from the Rehab Center. These youth have older parents who are struggling to take care of their grown “child” with disabilities. Here are a few photos of parents receiving $40.18 for their child. Although, we no longer sponsor individual children at the Rehabilitation Center for Children with Disabilities, we utilize your “general” donations to ensure this financial support for each child and their families every year. The Parents plan to buy toys and clothes for their children from the TOUCH funds. Here are photos of two of the parents that were sent to us. Thank you to our donors for your “extra” donations which make this possible.

Chaslivtsi Boarding School (formerly Chaslivtsi Orphanage) There are no major updates from Chaslivtsi. Most of the children are attending the boarding school and some stay there overnight through the week days. Others are transferred daily back to their houses. Each year, TOUCH provides a nice, new backpack filled with socks, hygiene items, and other items to the graduates when they finish their Chaslivtsi schooling. This did not happen because of COVID last spring, so Anna Stynych and Vasya Chubar will try to locate last year’s graduates and provide them with this donation. The funds have been wired to Vasya for this errand. Thanks, Vasya and Anna! Public School #14 The school has been operating on a regular basis since late January which the COVID lock-down ended. On February 11-12th, there were no classes in all of the schools in town due to severe weather conditions. During February, some of the staff and students were invited to visit a restaurant in Uzhhorod owned by entrepreneur Yuriy Bilak. There, they learn to make Lavash (a pita-like bread for appetizers) and chocolate fondant. The students cooked everything with their own hands and then were able to sit and enjoy their creations in the restaurant (and share with some of the school teachers, too). At the end of the classes, the students were also awarded with small gifts from Aliona Chura. Sincere thanks to the café owner and the chefs Natalia and Aliona, for the training. The Carpathian Foundation provided the funding for this wonderful event. Here are some photos: (the last one demonstrates how hard it is to wait…)

The school also hosted a Valentine’s celebration including recitations, singing, violins, and good things to eat. Here are two links: https://www.facebook.com/messenger_media/?thread_id=100003557254186&attachment_id=2166900330106989&message_id=mid.%24cAABa86Kr_BN9vLPBZ13i25IB3U1N The young girl who is reciting in this link is blind and has been receiving special braille equipment and supplies through TOUCH donors. If you scroll through this link, you will see a young boy playing a violin which was donated through TOUCH, also.

New Family Center The youth at the New Family Center continue to meet after school. If they are involved with those who dance and sing, they hold their practices. Friendships are formed at the New Family Center that last. These children bond because they almost all share a common experience of losing at least one parent. The TOUCH Project donations provided new costumes for one of their favorite performance dances- Czardas, a Hungarian dance. Here’s a photo of their spiffy new outfits:

QUILTS GALORE FROM BENTON COUNTY QUILTERS

Look at these beautiful quilts! As soon as we are able to travel to Ukraine with our 20th delegation, we will be hand carrying them over to six very fortunate Ukrainian children. Quilters from Benton County made them for children in The TOUCH Project. The talented quilters include Cynthia Janes, Lynn Grube, and other members of the Mary’s River Quilt Guild. We appreciate their abilities to create such works of art. These quilts are very beloved in Ukraine. We have seen quilts years later over there who are frayed and used, but have stood the test of time quite well. They have kept many a child warmer at night. Thank you to Cynthia, Lynn and all of the others who helped piece, sew, quilt and bind. Once again, please stay safe and healthy during this time of year! Hopefully, this virus will pass and it will happen faster if we all do what we need to do. Thanks for your support and check the list of sponsors and donors below to ensure your name is included. Sincerely, Alice Rampton, Co-Chair Sabra Killen, Co-Chair
