Come celebrate with us, this Sunday, February 28, at the 11:15 a.m. service, the Feast Day of our Patron Saint of Wales, David. We will have special music, daffodils and more, so please try to join us! D avid is the patron saint of Wales, whose feast day is the 1st of March (it is generally accepted that March 1 is the day he died), and this day was declared a national day of celebration within Wales in the 18th century. Every year parades are held in Wales to commemorate St. David who lived circa 500- 589. We will have special Welsh music planned for our St. David Namesake Feast Day on February 28 th . The organ voluntaries, anthems, hymns and service music (Sanctus; Agnus Dei) are all composed by a Welsh composer, William Mathias. Mr. Mathias's work, both instrumental and vocal, covered a wide range of expressions, but he was known principally for his church music. A number of his creations were composed expressly for royal occasions, and Queen Elizabeth II made him a Commander of the British Empire in 1985. His career reached a high point -- and a worldwide audience -- in 1981 when he received a royal commission for a brief work to be performed in St. Paul's Cathedral for the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana. His anthem "Let the People Praise Thee, O God," is a setting of Psalm 67 for chorus and organ. Dr. Mathias was a professor and then head of the music department at University College of North Wales from 1970 to 1988. He also appeared frequently in concert as a pianist and conductor, for his own and other people's works. He was the artistic director of the North Wales Music Festival held yearly at St. Asaph. He died at age 57 in 1992 at his summer home on the offshore island of Anglesey in the Irish Sea. Many Welsh people wear one or both of the national emblems of Wales on their lapel to celebrate St. David: the daffodil (a generic Welsh symbol which is in season during March) or the leek (Saint David's personal symbol) on this day. That's why you see the symbol of the daffodil around our church. Our clergy and choirs will carry daffodils in procession as they sing a well-known Welsh hymn tune CWM RHONDDA, God of Grace and God of Glory. Meditation on the Passion 500 pm March 6 2016 in the Nave

As the sunrsquos afternoon rays shine through our magnificent stained-glass windows pre-paring for twilight our adult choir will sing music from the 4th century through the 21st century inspired by the Passion of Christ Beautiful hymns anthems and readings will blend into a service that will express our Lenten pilgrimage toward Holy Week in a very

beautiful and powerful way This fifty-minute service is inspired by similar services at St Johnrsquos College Cambridge Eng-land Some of the same repertoire will be sung here at St Davidrsquos as has been sung at St Johnrsquos College in previous years Please circle 5 pm Sunday March 6th on your calendars It will be a splendid quiet time to reflect on Lent and your personal walk through this this Holy Season Invite friends neighbors family members and work colleagues to hear exceptionally beautiful Lenten anthems and hymns combined with introspective readings that will minister to you as the sun gently sets on a day that moves us closer to Good Friday and Easter by Sue Mitchell-Wallace
