LIVE THE LITURGY The Gospels continue to challenge us to the core. This is especially true in the way our social relationships have developed. Feeling safe and secure in the world are not things that come easily these days. Actually, we may find ourselves feeling more reservation, caution, reluctance, and fear than ever before. In a moment’s notice, life can drastically change. When someone has been intentionally and violently hurt, especially someone we love, we can all too easily find ourselves very attracted to the Old Testament philosophy of “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” Do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow. Love your enemies. Now, take a moment to reflect on all of this. Consider a horrible act of violence committed against someone you love. Listen. Think. Be honest. Can you do as Jesus directs?

SACRAMENTS

The Sign of the Cross with Ashes On Ash Wednesday we receive the sign of the Cross on our foreheads. The ashes remind us to be sorry for sin

and to do penance, but not in a showy manner. Knowing Christ’s desire to forgive, we ask for his help.

A Question from Jesus, and one from me Dear Friends in Christ,

While he prepared for his Passion and death, our Savior, Jesus Christ, endured his agony in the garden. We commonly think about this event as it relates to Jesus sweating blood and saying, “not my will, but thy will be done.” (see Lk 22:44) Matthew’s Gospel continues with a question from Jesus to his disciples. When Jesus returned to his disciples he says to Peter, “Could you not watch with me for one hour? Watch and pray that you may enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Mt 26:40-41)

How could Jesus’ own disciples take a nap at such an important time?! Why was Jesus expecting them to keep watch with him? This passage displays the weakness of our human nature. First, Jesus himself is tempted to give up. But the whole story begins with Jesus saying to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” (Mt 26:36) Prayer is the lesson for us today.

The season of Lent begins this Wednesday. The four “pillars” of Lent are: Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving. I think you know what purpose a pillar serves. Without them, a building collapses or is compromised. Nobody wants to occupy a building that is unsafe. “Could you not watch with me for one hour?” Jesus asked his disciples this question. Here is my question to you: Why are daily Mass and Confession so poorly attended at our parishes?

Don’t get mad just yet. I understand that work schedules may be limiting for some. Daily Mass lasts about 25 minutes. Let me invite you to begin attending daily Mass during this season of Lent. Are you facing temptation? Does life seem to be challenging? Maybe you have been particularly blessed lately. All of these are reasons to come to Mass. Begin by coming just once a week; Jesus will be happy to see you!

The Second point: Confession. I know this can be a difficult sacrament. What if I said I was handing out $100 bills every morning at 7:30 am? Who wouldn’t show up? Friends, God’s grace of forgiveness is worth infinitely more than that, and it’s available for free every time we confess our sins to a priest and hear the words of absolution “I absolve you from your sins… Go in peace, your sins are forgiven.” The Venerable Bishop, Fulton Sheen even said that professional psychologists would be out of a job if people frequented the confessional. So, during the season of Lent, confession will be available on Tuesday evenings at 7pm, (in addition to the usual times). Please take advantage of this wonderful gift of God’s mercy and love for us. The light is on for you.

So, as Jesus was sweating blood, and as he contemplated his Passion and death, our call this Lenten season is to STAY AWAKE. The abundant graces of God are opened for each of us once again. Let’s make sure the spirit AND the flesh are prepared for eternal life.
