1st Sunday of Lent 2

Pastor’s Corner…This Thursday, we celebrate the Sacrament of Confi rmation with our 8th graders. We welcome Abbot James Albers, OSB for our celebration of Confi rmation. The same Holy Spirit of Pentecost, the promised Paraclete and Friend, comes to our young people to strengthen them in discipleship, and fi ll them with the gifts needed for walking the journey of life as Christian men and women. We are so proud of our young people as they become fully initiated Catholics in Confi rmation!

Perhaps a little review of the Sacrament of Confi rmation is a good reminder for all of us.Confi rmation deepens the grace of our Baptism, unites us more fully to Christ, intensifi es our relationship as children of God, makes our bonds with the Church more perfect (our sense of belonging and responsibility to the universal Church, as well as our particular parish is deepened), gives us the strength of the Spirit to defend our faith, imprints an indelible character upon our soul.

An increase of the 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit comes to us in Confi rmation: Wisdom,

Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety, Fear of the Lord.

Through Confi rmation we are enabled and become capable of living and acting according

to the Fruits of the Holy Spirit: Charity, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness,

Generosity, Gentleness, Faithfulness, Modesty, Self-Control, Chastity.

Come Holy Spirit upon our young people as they are sealed with your presence in Confi rmation. Come anew upon each of us, fan the dull ambers of our hearts, reignite your fi re within us, draw us closer to Christ, make us better Christians, send us as witnesses of Gospel joy to a world in need. Amen!

Beginning Ash Wednesday, you may have noticed a change that has been implemented to the collect (opening prayer of the Mass). Here is the why: In May of 2020, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments wrote to the English-speaking Conferences of Bishops regarding the concluding doxology of the Collects in the Roman Missal. Specifi cally, the Congregation pointed out that the current translation, which concludes “[...] in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever,” is incorrect. There is no mention of “one” in the Latin, and “Deus” in the Latin text refers to Christ. Therefore, the correct translation, which is already refl ected in the Missal in other languages is simply: “[...] in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.”

In addition to so many suggestions we have given for engaging the Season of Lent, you may wish to consider these suggestions as well: Archbishop Naumann invites you to his podcast refl ections for Ash Wednesday and each Sunday of Lent. Archbishop’s refl ections will be based on the Scriptures of the day followed by a layperson testimony of growing in friendship with the Lord and what God is doing in their life. You can access the podcast at www.archkcks.org and scroll down to specifi c podcast.

The Feast of St. Joseph draws near on March 19th. In this Year of St. Joseph, many have decided to do a 33-day Consecration to St. Joseph. Some are using “Consecration to Jesus through St. Joseph” by Dr. Gregory Bottaro and Jen Settle. Some are using “Consecration to St. Joseph: The Wonders of Our Spiritual Father” by Fr. Donald Calloway.

Remember we will have the extra opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation here at Nativity and at every parish in the Archdiocese from 6 - 7 p.m. each Wednesday. Make time to pray, give alms, fast with intention!

Peace,Fr. Mike

Nativity Parish School

¡HablemosEspañol!Guau! It’s almost the end of the third quarter ofour school year, and now we are getting readyfor Spring Break diversion (fun)!

It’s been a blessing and honor teachingstudents for another year at NPS. I always feelenthusiastic when I step into your children’sclassrooms to teach Spanish. Our language goalis simple; to communicate effectively andunderstand confidently. In the overall andrelatively short amount of time that studentsare exposed to Spanish, they will be unlikely tospeak perfectly right away. Completeassimilation and accent correction are skills thattake years to perfect. Luckily, native fluency isonly a portion of our objective. Together, we willfocus on and explore what makes languagework; when to use certain speech types, whereit comes from, how it changes, and why it isimportant.

Students are always excited to learn new songs, new vocabulary words, greetings, and all the funthings planned. As always, I’m trying to helpstudents learn in a fun and safe environmentand make them feel confident when they arespeaking and learning Spanish. Thank you forraising such wonderful children. Again, thankyou for another fun year of learning Spanish atNativity Parish School.

Prayer for the End of the VirusAlmighty and merciful Father, who show your love to all your creation.

We come before you asking for a quick control of the Coronavirus currently ravaging our world.

Hear graciously the prayers we make for those affected by the virus in various parts of the world.

Grant healing to the sick, eternal life to the dead and consolation to the bereaved families.

We pray that an effective medicine to combat the sickness be speedily found.

We pray for the relevant governments and health authorities that they take appropriate steps for the good of the people.

Look upon us in your mercy and forgive us our failings. Amen
