From the Pastor:

THE FAITH OF ST. VALENTINE

While Christmas and Easter are the two highpoints of the year, something needs to fill the

gap between them. For the Church, we have the seasons of Epiphany and Lent, as we see

who this Baby born on Christmas is during Epiphany and see what He has come to do during Lent.

There are other days that fill this gap as well, like St. Valentine’s Day.

While the world might celebrate this day in some interesting ways, the church also celebrates

this day and remembers St. Valentine, one of our early Christian church fathers, who gave

his life for his confession of who Jesus is and what Jesus came to do. We don’t know much

about Valentine; there is a story about how he gave a note of consolation in the shape of a

heart to a little girl who was worried about him, and that might be where the tradition of giv-

ing “Valentines” originated. While we don’t know much about his history, we do know that

he believed in Jesus Christ and that Valentine was a member of Christ’s Church, willing to

die for his faith rather than deny it.

Today, we associate Valentine’s Day with love, especially between a husband

and wife. While that might not have been what St. Valentine’s life was actually

teaching, the love between a husband and wife is a picture of the love that Val-

entine confessed that Jesus has for His Church. When St. Paul writes (in Ephe-

sians Chapter Six) about the roles and duties of a husband and wife, saying:

“22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the

head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church…25 Husbands, love your

wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her”, he ends that

section by writing:

“32 This mystery is profound,

and I am saying that it refers to

Christ and the church.”

For St. Paul, you can’t separate a discussion of marriage from a discussion of

Christ and the Church. Our marriages are imperfect; we love each other, yet we

sin against each other because we are sinners. In Christ, we see a perfect love as

He gives Himself for His Bride, the church. This is the faith that St. Valentine

was killed for confessing. As we celebrate Valentine’s Day, let this be on our

minds as well. We might not all have a husband or a wife, but we do all have

Christ.

A little look at Obadiah.

For many Christians, the minor prophets in the Old Testament are confusing and pretty unfamiliar. Not often do we hear about the minor twelve prophets in church or Sunday school. There are a few verses from Micah and Malachi that we hear, especially around Christmas time. We all know the story of Jonah and the great fish (not a whale!). Outside of that, though, the other Old Testament prophets are relatively obscure. Certainly they are the true word of God- (there is no doubt about that), but we may wonder: What exactly do they mean to us today? For God’s people in ancient Israel, they spoke of His judgement and deliverance, among other things. They spoke impending destruction and everlasting comfort for God’s people but all ultimately point towards the coming of Christ. As Jesus tells us, Holy Scripture, the law and the prophets all testify to Himself (John 5:39, Luke 24:27). They don’t just testify here and there, their entire message points to Him! Let’s take a look at one of the least-known of the Old Testament prophets, Obadiah. Obadiah doesn’t specifically state when he was a prophet but it’s safe to assume and widely understood that he was a prophet immediately after the de-struction of the Temple in Jerusalem (Solomon’s Temple) in around 587 BC which also would have been the same time that the prophet Jeremiah was alive. These were not pleasant times. The power and glory of David and Solomon were dim memo-ries and the entire city of Jerusalem was in ruins. God’s people would have felt as though they had no hope. They would have been destitute, broken, and terrified. Obadiah writes his prophecy against Edom. Now, Edom was not the nation that attacked Jerusalem, but was a hated neighbor that constantly was the bane of Israel’s existence. Edom descended from Esau, so the sibling rivalry was tense and you can probably imagine the hatred between the two nations. They did not get along at all. What happened in Obadiah’s time (about 1400 years after Jacob and Esau were alive) was that as the people of Jerusalem fled through Edom, Edomites likely took advantage of them and further troubled and mocked the people of Israel, even cheer-ing on their destruction, as is evidenced in Psalm 137:7. Obadiah then prophesies against Edom. The Edomites were, for lack of a better word, really jerks. Obadiah spends most of the book proclaiming the impending doom of Edom. Three different proclamations are issued against Edom. They are said to be self-serving, boastful, and gloaters. Their destruction is foretold. Instead of being compassionate to their Israelite brethren, they cheer on their demise. The seven verses of Obadiah provide comfort and hope for the Israelites and their up-coming deliverance from the hands of evil people. Obadiah tells Israel that they shall possess not only Edom, but Canaan, Philistia, Samaria, and other lands of people who constantly tormented the Jewish people. The main lesson of Obadiah is that God will deliver His people. The possession of the people of Israel is not physi-cal land; rather, it is possession of a spiritual kingdom. The Kingdom of Heaven is much greater and much more far reaching than the Holy Land. Obadiah prophesies of Christ’s coming kingdom that will have people from all tribes and lands, yet shall only be one people. Christ’s Kingdom on the Last Day will triumph over all who mock and scoff at His people. In this, we have comfort. In a time where Christianity no longer is tolerated as it was and when our beliefs are mocked and scorned by others, we have hope. God will destroy evil and conquer death. The righteous children of God, as Jesus says in Matthew 25:46 will go into eternal life. Just like the Israelites were promised the land, we too are promised a new and everlasting home, much greater than anything we can imagine. Obadiah tells us quite a bit about our lives as Christians. We are constantly surrounded by those who want our de-mise. Sin, death, and the devil have always been hard at work against God’s people. We sometimes doubt God’s promises when we are faced with all kinds of adversity, just as the Israelites in Obadiah’s time did. Yet we have hope. We have a great hope in the Lord’s return and in that, we have comfort. Obadiah points towards that day of the Lord. When we pray “Come, Lord Jesus” we are praying for that day, just as Obadiah did. We are praying for Christ to come and rescue us. We know he certainly will.

Preschool 4’s: Mr. Jj likes to jump. He is happy his letter starts JESUS. Mr. Rr like to run races. He is very fast. Mr. Yy is so tired, he yawns all day long. On Friday of our tired week we will have pajama day and eat a yummy breakfast . Mr. Xx marks when something is wrong, all wrong. He is so mixed up. On Ash Wednesday we will hear how our sin separated us from God, but Jesus took our sins with Him to the cross. Preschool 3’s: We love parties! We are having pretend parties with our friends and a real Valentine’s Day party. “Old King Cole” was a merry ole soul. He had food and music to make his day. “I’m A Little Tea Pot” rhyme has us pretending to have a tea party with our friends. We love to pretend cook and shop for groceries. “Pat a Cake” rhyme has us singing to our friends. We are learning what an initial is, and what our friends spe-cial initial is. We will even sing with a J for Jesus. “Wee Willie Winkie Runs Through the Town” is a rhyme where Willie is wearing his pajamas. We are going to have a pajama day too. Afternoon Enrichment News: This month we will be counting and recognizing numbers 0 – 70. Our new pattern is AABC. We will be learning navigation words so that we can find hidden treasures in our room. We like to play different jobs. If you have work shirts, we would love them. We also like old lady and man hats, gloves and purses.

It has been a crazy time this past month with illness and weather causing lower numbers at times. We even had a day off because there was no heat following bad weather. Hopefully God willing, we will be done with this mess soon. Looking forward to February, we pray for good weather but we would like a little more snow, but only in small amounts, so we can get out an play in the snow. We have so much fun climbing the snow hills made by the snow plow trucks on the edge of the parking lots. And Valentine's Day is coming with parties on Friday, February 14th. We are looking for donations of empty cereal boxes or the larger Kleenex boxes to decorate and use for our Valentine cards. If you have some laying around that you would like to recycle please drop them off in the child care wing near the wood coat lockers in the hall, room 6. ' I will be attending the Snowtire Conference February 6-7, but the center will be open with all the caregivers present. A Saturday in March, most if not all the caregivers, will attend the Infant/Toddler Academy in Caro, for a day of training. We would like to thank all those who have remembered child care in the prayers and with their donations of clothing and toys for the chil-dren. We wish God's blessings on all as we move through this new year with a chance to make a difference in our children's lives with Je-

sus.

so we continue to be A GREAT, JOYful PLACE TO GROW in 2019-20!

We have just finished up Lutheran Schools Week and we are reminded how blessed we are to be part of a Lutheran School. So, what makes this school special? We get to talk about Jesus, and the values He taught, and we get to show and receive forgiveness every day as we are a school full of sinners. Growing in Christ is something that I enjoy watching the students do, and something that I get to do with the students, staff/faculty, families, and congregation. We are so blessed to be part of a Lutheran school! This month we are having Valentine’s Day parties and getting ready for the fish fry. If you want to help us out again this year we would GREATLY appreciate it. Time and again I thank you for your support and prayers and I am going to keep doing that, because without you, we wouldn't be here. This is our 99th year and we are so excited for our 100th year next year. Thanks for being part of that. God has continued to bless the efforts of the congregation. God has really done some-thing special here. Have a blessed February! Levi

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MINUTES DECEMBER 17th, 2019 Present: Pastor Burhop, Vicar, Brent Dankert (late) Randy Bittner, John Dohrmann, Scott Briggs, Levi Bringold, Tom Bauer, Eric Rupprecht, Jeff Sommerfield, Betty Wiseman, Rob Pike, Milinda Bader, Heather Jasman. Also present were new incoming board members: Jessica Haller, Pete Hudek, Tyler Simpson and Nancy Bauer. Absent: Ken Zimmer, Connie Ackerman Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Scott at 7:32 pm. Devotion: Pastor talked about what it means to be a leader in the church and read from Mark Chapter 10. Pastor said that the goal is to serve and that it is an honor to hold a position of service in the church. Devotion closed with prayer. Brent had the group go around and introduce themselves. He stated that the agenda for tonight is 2020, the nominating committee, the Board of Elders’ report on the vicar program and the status of the estate that was willed to the church. November minutes will be approved at next month’s meeting. Brent reminded the boards to submit a members list and goals for 2020. Financial Report: Randy reported that as of the end of November we are in the hole $53,000 and consistently bringing in less than we are spending. Child care is down this month as well. Frequently this time of year we are in this position and we are hoping that next month we should have a better handle on where we are at, as December is typically our best month as far as givings. Randy asked Rob for a status of the estate. Rob said that as benefactors we do not have access to all of the information. It is not our property and we are waiting for things to go through with the estate. Discussion about Trustees handling the estate versus the Board of Finance. Because it is a legal matter it goes through the Trustees. Some of the land from the estate is in PA 116 but things are getting squared away, it just takes time. Hoping to have a check before the end of the year. Nominating Committee: John reported that the Nominating Committee contacted a number of people and had a meeting regarding the results. John recommended that as the boards are looking for new members they should consider some names that he has, as there are people willing to serve but do not want to be the chair. We should also keep the new members in mind as a way to get them involved. Brent challenged the board chairs to reach out to the members on John’s list. John said that Dan Pike has agreed to chair the Nominating Com-mittee next year, with John and Ruth staying on to help. Gary will step down. Pete Hudek, as the new chairman, will also nominate two new people to serve on the Nominating Committee. Vicar Program: Pete reported that the Elders are going to take the vicar program to the congregation again in January. Brent discussed the importance of the vicars and how they have touched different members of the congregation in different ways. The Elders would like to see the vicarage program as a mission, and not to be looked at as the benefits that Trinity gets, but what we can do to benefit the Lutheran Church. Discussion about the advantages of bringing the vicar program to the congregation each year to let them decide. M/S/C to take it to the congregation for 2020/21 whether to continue the vicar program. The voters meeting will be held January 12th between services. Pastor’s Report: No report. Board Reports: Chairman: Nothing to report. Vice Chairman: Nothing to report. Board of Finance: Randy had nothing further to report than what has already been discussed. Board of Elders: Nothing to report than what has already been discussed. Board of Trustees: Rob had nothing further to report than what has already been discussed. Short discussion about the status of the projector screens. Both are now broken. Paul Hess is researching places to repair them. Board of Stewardship: Betty reported that Prayer Shawl Ministry worked very hard and was able to get 93 sets of hats/scarves/gloves com-pleted. The Quilters donated 118 quilts to the Bay City Rescue Mission, Saginaw Rescue Mission, Emmaus House and Trinity Food Bas-kets. Betty stated that the quilters could use some help cutting fabric, sewing strips, tying squares, etc. Betty praised the Prayer Shawl Ministry and the Quilters for all of their hard work.

IN DEPTH STUDY ON MARRIAGE AS A PICTURE OF CHRIST AND THE

CHURCH

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 13TH, 7:00-9:00 pm

Starting in February, we are going to have one “In-Depth Study” each month,

looking at some topics that are a little too big to complete during our regular

Bible Study time. This month we are going to look at the topic of “Marriage as

a Picture of Christ and His Bride, the Church.” This would be a great class to

attend if you are married, of course, but as each of us is a member of the Bride

of Christ, this is certainly not just something for married couples to attend.

What will we do? We will start with a look at the Rite of Holy Matrimony in our hym-

nals and why our marriage services are set up the way they are. We will look at

all the Bible readings associated with that service, what they teach us about the

Christian view of marriage, and how that helps us in our own relationships.

That discussion will then lead into some questions about practical issues on

marriage, and why this all matters to us. As usual, there will be some food in-

volved.

Who should come? First, those who are married who might want to think back to their

marriage vows and examine them after being married for some time. Second,

anyone who is thinking about getting married, whether that is sometime soon

or sometime in the distant future. Finally, this topic is important for everyone

who is a Christian, whether you plan on ever being married or not! As St. Paul

says, when we are speaking about marriage, we are really speaking about our

Lord Jesus Christ, and His Bride, the Church.

pm. If you are interested in attending, please let Pastor Burhop know.

Weekly Scripture Readings & Sermon Summaries

February 2020 February 2nd, 2020 – The Purification of Mary and The Presentation of Our Lord Psalm 84; Hebrews 2:14-18; Luke 2:22-32 “Cleansed and Claimed” - Sermon Text: Isaiah 52:7-10 - Rev. Dr. Thomas Ahlersmeyer What does it mean to be a Christian? What rests at the heart of a Christian’s reality and experience? God answers these questions and more when Joseph, Mary, and the baby Jesus come to Jerusalem’s temple 40 days after His Christmas birth. February 9th, 2020 – Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany Psalm 112:1-9; Isaiah 58:6-9; Matthew 5:14-16 “Lights, Shine!” - Sermon Text: Matthew 5:14-16 - Rev. Dr. Walter Maier III You, who are joined to Christ in faith, have light and are light. Jesus says to you, “Shine!” Great, but what does all of this mean? February 16th, 2020 – Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany Psalm 119:1-8; Deuteronomy 30:15-20; Matthew 5:21-37 “He Is Your Life” - Sermon Text: Deuteronomy 30:15-20 - Rev. Thomas Eggold Like the children of Israel, we are facing a future that is full of transition. For some of you, these transitions will be trying and traumatic, and for all of us, the reality of change brings with it the temptation to walk our own way, but the story of God’s action in our lives sustains us, and the Spirit of God strengthens us, in the midst of life’s transitions, and in the face of our fear and weakness, God is always there to meet our sinful disobedience with forgiveness, life and salvation. February 23rs, 2020 – The Transfiguration of Our Lord Psalm 2:6-12; 2 Peter 1:16-21; Matthew 17:1-9 “God and Man” - Sermon Text: Matthew 17:2 - Rev. Shayne Jonker “Jesus was transfigured before them, and His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became white as light.” Peter, James, and John saw that: Jesus, the Son of Man, in the glory of His kingdom. God of God, Light of Light. It’s Transfig-uration Sunday, the last of the Epiphany Sundays, the big epiphany where we hear of Jesus shining like the sun in the presence of Moses and Elijah. It’s here that we find there’s much more to Jesus than meets the eye.

Greetings, Trinity Lutheran Church and School! During the entire month of February we will be singing Divine Service Setting Two. This setting has been sung in this church before and I know that we are famil-iar with the words from other settings. I wonder, however, if we know from where the music come. A bit of background of the makeup of the music in a service! The Ordinaries are the parts of the service that never change. They remain the same from week to week and include the Kyrie, Gloria in Excelsis (or This is the Feast), Alleluia, Offertory, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, and Nunc Dimittis (or Thank the Lord). The Propers of a ser-vice change from week to week. These include, the Introit, The Old Testament read-ing, Gradual, New Testament reading, and Gospel reading. When we talk about music pertaining to a particular service, we are usually referring to those Ordinaries, although there are other parts of the service that we do sing. Each setting in our hymnal is composed by different people, especially Setting Four, which has no fewer than six different musical minds involved. Setting Two, however, was composed largely by Ronald A. Nelson, a musician and composer in Minnesota. Born in 1927, his entire life has been in dedication to the music of the Lutheran church and has gained recognition for his compositions and work with parish choirs. He has gained many accolades including the Distinguished Alumnus Award from St. Olaf and the F. Melius Christiansen Award from the American Choral Direc-tors Association of Minnesota. He still attends the parish in which he worked for 37 years at Westwood Lutheran Church and is now a choir member! Our hymnal is full of history with hymns dating back to the early centuries of the church. But we also hold and sing new compositions within the LSB. It is good to be reminded of the musical traditions that the LCSM continues to build upon. Kantor Hannah F. Bjornstad
