From the Desk of the CEO The holidays are well and truly over, and shire staff are hard at work again on the Paynes Find
end of the Paynes Find - Sandstone Road and at the administration office and caravan park. One
person who is not back at work with the shire is former roller driver George Cross who has
resigned and left the shire on the 14th January 2019 to take over the Mount Magnet Post Office.
We wish George all the best in his new venture.
Mechanic John McCormack who has had little major work to do due to the modern fleet of equipment owned by the shire has joined the road construction crew driving the roller and tending to any problems that arise on other plant and equipment.
The Annual Electors Meeting was held on the 31st January with 3 electors turning up to have their say and ask questions on issues in the shire. The first being what is the Community Development Reserve able to be used for? Answer this reserve is to be used for projects to benefit the community as determined from time to time. Money from this reserve will be used on several projects this year. There were also questions raised about the replacement of shade sails over the water park and the playground at Phillip Lefroy Park. The shire is looking at replacing the shade sails with a permanent roof as the shade sails are expensive and don’t last in the wind. The shire also received a complaint from one elector about shire workers making noise early in the morning when using the blower to shift leaves off the synthetic grass at the administration building, using the garbage truck to empty rubbish bins and the use of the road sweeper.
Other than that it is a relatively quiet time of the year for the shire with no Council meeting held in
January but rest assured those office staff that are working have plenty to catch up on and now
with the Post Office to look after they are kept busy and the 6 monthly budget review will keep me
busy.

Australia Day Celebrations The Annual Australia Day celebrations were kicked off with a good Aussie breakfast at the community centre with around 30 people coming along. A big thank you to my 2 trusty assistants Freda and Karan for the fantastic job in cooking the breakfast. After the games some of the participants went on to play some good Aussie cricket and Richard also brought his boomerang down for anyone that was game to have a go. This is not as easy as it looks…there were some great throws where the boomerang came back and some not so good. Thank you to Harry for doing the marking out for the various games played and to David for helping with running the events. Next year we will look at having some fun inside games as well…like Pictionary, due to a lot of us getting more mature (maybe not wiser) and not able to toss and throw things around like we used to. Great to see Kit Lefroy come back to Sandstone with three mates for Australia Day. With youth on their side they made throwing look easy. Many thanks to all who came down to help celebrate the lucky country we live in. Beth Walton

TRUCK CATCHES FIRE ON MT MAGNET—SANDSTONE ROAD A daring truck driver in WA’s Mid West has escaped injury and saved his cargo after climbing into a burning cab to detach two trailers.
Police said the 52-year-old from Toodyay was driving west on Mount Magnet-Sandstone Road on Thursday, about 110km east of Mount Magnet, when he felt his feet getting hot. “He noticed there was heat coming through the floor, so he slowed and then realised fire and smoke was coming from underneath the truck,” Sergeant Mike Dearnley of Mount Magnet Police said. “He’s then stopped and separated the prime mover from the trailers, and then tried to move it forward to protect the trailers.” Sgt Dearnley said when the driver realised he could do nothing to stop the flames, he acted quickly. “He got back into the burning truck and was able to move it far enough away from the trailers and then jump out,” he said. The blaze then took complete hold, consuming the cab and burning it to a pile of scrap and ashes. By the time police arrived about 6.40pm, firefighters from Sandstone Bushfire Brigade had all but extinguished the flames. Sgt Dearnley praised the quick thinking of the driver, who had been travelling from the Thunderbox Gold Mine, 40 km east of Leinster. “It was a split second decision,” he said. “He’s definitely protected the loads he was towing. “He had no burns, nothing like that. He might have inhaled a fair bit of smoke, but he’s of the belief that he’s okay.” The driver was taken to the Mt Magnet Nursing post to be checked out for smoke inhalation.

HISTORY CORNER— An excerpt from the book
“Sandstone—from Gold to Wool and Back Again” by Sally L Senior
SOCIAL LIFE THROUGH THE AGES —pg 245
Small outback communities have always made their own entertainment. Black Range and Sandstone were no exception to this. Right from the earliest days, the Black Range area was regarded by those from surrounding districts as somewhere where a ‘good time’ was guaranteed. Nungarra, during its short life, was a hard working little township, with little time for frivolities. Sandstone, on the other hand, was a ‘boom town’, and quickly organised a very full social life for the residents. The first recorded organised social functions in the district were a ‘smoke social’ held by the football clubs Reefers and Towns, at Nungarra in September 1904 at Gardner’s Palace Hotel, and a school picnic in 1904. Considering that Nungarra had only been gazetted as a townsite in that same year, it gives some indication of the social nature of man. Spiritual Activities Spiritual activities were among the first mentioned social events to take place in the new town of Sandstone, with very active church members working hard as they did their best to raise money to build their respective churches. The Salvation Army was the first to be mentioned and was very active in Nungarra, moving to Sandstone with the changeover to the new town, while the Methodist denomination built the first church in Sandstone. This was opened in December 1907 in time for Christmas. On Christmas eve 1907. the Methodist choir conducted carol singing at different places in the streets of Sandstone between 11pm and midnight. The choir, led by J Bald, added a festive atmosphere to the evening. Weddings Weddings are always a popular social event, and the first wedding to take place in Nungarra was between W Cock and Deborah Macdonald, in 1905, while the first European baby born in Nungarra was William Alfred Cock, on 28th January 1906. In the same year, the manager of the WA Bank, P Lowrie, married the daughter of John McManaway, the licensee of the Palace Hotel, Nungarra. Even after the general population had moved to Sandstone, weddings, especially the bigger ones, were still newsworthy and were covered in great detail in the local newspaper. The wedding of Reginald Charles Prater, formerly of Ballarat Victoria, and Winifred Grace Mullins was held on 2 December 1908 at the Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. T.C Oldfield. Sometimes a clergyman was not available to conduct the ceremony, and in this case the Registrar, H.B. Hayles was called upon. This was the case when A.T. Rowe of Sandstone married Miss King of Mininga Marley. The ceremony was followed by supper at the Shamrock Café. Mrs. Foley provided the repast. It was the custom in 1912 to print a list of wedding presents in the local newspaper following a big wedding. This was all very well when the list was generous, but one can only imagine the embarrassment it could cause, and hope that the names of the donors were not included in the list. By 1908 more married men were bringing their wives and children to Sandstone, resulting in less temporary looking ‘camps’, and the town began to take on a more permanent appearance as better housing was provided. This made life much better for those women already there. The presence of more women also improved the social life of everyone. In August 1908, the Sandstone Ladies Sewing Guild was formed, so that the women of the town could get together for company, as well as to sew together when they met in the Australian Workers’ Association (AWA ) Hall. …../ to be continued
The bride wore ivory white China silk. The skirt fell in graceful folds, was padded at the hem and edge of the train and decorated with insertions and tucks. The bodice was Kimono style trimmed with Valenciennes lace insertions and sleeves of tucked net. She wore a tulle veil with orange blossom and carried a shower bouquet of white sweet peas and asparagus fern, a gift from the bridegroom. The bridesmaids were Misses Nellie Rowell and Florrie Ovington and the Matrons of Honour were Mesdames A Rowell and I Ovington. George Green was the Best Man and Tom Ovington the Groomsman. The bride was given away by Mr. P.J. McDonnell. The reception was held at the AWA Hall.
