From the Desk of the CEO Works Supervisor David Holland has settled into the position well and while he has only been here a few weeks his experience and expertise is already being noticed in decisions and suggestions he has made. Applications have closed for the Gardener/Handyman position with interviews to be carried out soon. There were several good applicants and I am optimistic that the towns gardens will be in good hands moving forward. At the May Council meeting items discussed included the Objectives and Reasons for charging differential rates in the shire. This document is required as part of the process of getting ministerial approval to charge higher rates on properties used for mining activities than are charged on residential and pastoral properties. No information had been received from Horizon Power on the electricity requirements for the proposed units at the caravan park so that item was left on the table. Information received since the meeting has revealed that the excessive cost of a power upgrade may make the proposal unviable however other options are being considered. Other items discussed were the compliance issue of the annual review of the delegations register which delegates certain decision making powers to the CEO and sub delegations to the Works Supervisor from the CEO. A late item was introduced to the meeting regarding a request from film maker Jordon Prince-Wright for sponsorship of his latest World War 1 film based on true events. Council resolved 4/2 to offer sponsorship of $20,000 plus in kind support and in return quite a bit of filming will be done in Sandstone and the shire will be promoted at various functions and screenings of the movie plus our shire logo will be included in the credits at the end of the film. It is anticipated that this sponsorship and the exposure of Sandstone at promotional events will increase tourism to the shire. The community will be invited to get involved in the making of the film through helping out with things like catering for the crew and actors. Residents would have noticed that the installation of the long promised bowling green at the community centre was undertaken in late May with the new facility providing new recreational opportunities for locals and visitors to town. There will be a little bit of work required to be done by the shire to finish things off when the installers leave before the green can be used. Keep an eye on notice boards for details of when the facility will be available for use and planned bowling events. Harry Hawkins Chief Executive Officer

Once again, Roman is coming to Sandstone to play for us. Last time he was very well received and we look forward to his visit on

25th June in the Town Hall. 6pm start, Free entry, please bring a plate for supper afterwards.

Biographical Sketch

Roman Rudnytsky is an American concert pianist of Ukrainian background whose performances take him all over the world. A graduate of the famous Juilliard School in New York, he has as of 2017 played in about 100 countries. Born in New York into a family of professional musicians, Roman Rudnytsky started the study of piano at age four and gave his first recital at age seven. He is a prize winner of ten national and international piano competitions, including 2nd Prize in the International Leventritt Competition in New York- at that time, the most prestigious international competition for piano and violin in the USA. He has been soloist with many orchestras around the world, playing with them over 45 different works for piano and orchestra. He has also played many concerts in over 35 countries since 1984 through the auspices of US Embassies and has also played recitals on about 70 cruises of P&O and Cunard ships to and from the UK. His most recent performances (in 2018) were on the islands of Guam and Saipan, in Chile (ninth tour), in the UK, and on four cruises of P&O and Cunard ships (including the Queen Mary 2). 2019 concerts so far have included performances in the state of Ohio in the USA (January), Guam and Saipan (February), and his tenth tour in Chile (April). In May, he played two recitals in the Boston area. Later in 2019, he will be playing recitals on three cruises of P&O and Cunard ships and seven recitals in the UK in-between. Roman Rudnytsky has come to Australia for concert tours every two years since 1979 and has played about 600 concerts there in that time - more than in any other country he has travelled to. These have ranged from the Sydney Opera House to many small country and Outback towns in every State and in the NT - for many local arts councils, at many regional performing arts centres, at universities, and as soloist with several orchestras. Mr. Rudnytsky gave the Australian premiere performance in 1993 of the then-recently-discovered Liszt Concerto No.3 in E Flat for piano and orchestra as soloist with the SBS Youth Orchestra in the Sydney Town Hall. The SBS broadcast this concert through its TV network as part of its documentary on this concerto, called "Discovering Liszt". He also served twice as Artist-in-Residence at the Univ. of Melbourne Faculty of Music and once at the Univ. of Wollongong School of Creative Arts. Roman Rudnytsky is also currently "Professor Emeritus" of the Dana School of Music of Youngstown (Ohio) State University, where he served on the piano and music faculty for 39 years. His 2019 Australian is his 21st there and will go from mid-June to mid-September, with 22 concerts to play. This recital in Sandstone is his second one here.

The below feedback was received via email from one of our Sandstone visitors. My husband and I (plus 2 friends) visited Sandstone for the first time on the weekend of 11/12th May and we were immediately impressed with the neatness of the town. The locals we met were friendly and welcoming. I picked up a copy of May 2019's "Bush Telegraph" at the Alice Atkinson Caravan Park and I have to say I was most impressed with that too. I note you have asked for donations for future issues so I thought I would contact you. (I have been responsible for putting together newsletters etc in my past life and I know how difficult it is to come up with items that are refreshing, new and interesting and how hard it is to get stories together for the next issue. Very few people volunteer items and it usually means you have to "twist arms", chase people up and maybe take your own photos.) I would like to commend you on the way you have put the May issue together. It must be difficult in a small town to find enough interesting items each month but you have done that well and creatively, illustrating advertisements with appropriate and sometimes fun pictures. Well done you!!! It is obvious that the residents of Sandstone are proud of their town and that is very commendable. Look what you have achieved by pulling together!! For me our visit was an unexpected pleasure and I would like you to convey to the people of Sandstone that their efforts are noted and appreciated. Keep up the good work! You are a beautiful and precious jewel in the outback's crown. With much appreciation Carol Cocks Mount Barker, SA 5251 PS I will send you a photo and 3 recipes which you might be able to use in a future BT issue. Editors note : Recipes will be in following editions.

Our Water Playground has been getting a bit of a work out lately, even with the cooler weather.

These ‘youngsters’ had a great time!

You don’t stop playing because you grow old, you grow old because you stop playing.

Our Visitor Centre has only been open for 4 weeks, but we’ve had some lovely feedback already. Some of the comment from our Visitor Book include:- “Best kept little museum we’ve come across” “Pretty town, lovely bougainvillea's” “Great staff” “Nice tidy place” “Beautiful little town”

HISTORY CORNER— An excerpt from the book

“Sandstone—from Gold to Wool and Back Again” by Sally L Senior

SPORT—pg 269-270

As in all early goldfields towns, sport played a very big part in the lives of the residents, in particular the men. It was their way of forgetting their worries, and of ‘letting off steam’, but most of all it was for companionship. Although many of the men worked on the big mines in the early days, there were still a very large number who mostly lived and worked alone. This has continued into modern times, when many still work alone for most of the week, and the getting together with others to play a sport is their one luxury—a time of comparing notes and general talk, as well as a ‘good cold beer’ afterwards. The first sports mentioned in those early years in the life of Nungarra were those that did not require any extra equipment. Most men owned a gun of some description, for shooting game for food if nothing else, so a rifle shooting club was naturally one of the first to be organised. Many owned bicycles as their means of transport, so cycle races were popular, and horses were widely used for both riding and wheeled transport, so it was inevitable that horseracing would develop. For team sport, football and cricket were popular, and with the different mines and settlements getting together their own teams, great rivalry soon developed. As among men the world over, boxing was a popular spectator, and sometimes participator, sport. To give some indication of the sporting activities in the Black Range/Sandstone area over time, each will be dealt with separately and in alphabetical order, not the order of which started first. Badminton Badminton was introduced in the 1960s, then the shire used moneys allocated to it for sporting facilities to purchase sporting equipment for the district, including badminton racquets, a net and shuttlecocks. This was played in the Shire Hall, which was suitably marked out. It enjoyed great popularity to begin with, then faded out. It has been recommended several times since, but has never really ‘taken off’. Boxing Although it was inevitable that there were boxing matches held in and around Nungarra and Black Range, there are no records of organised fights before the main population moved to Sandstone in 1907. From then onwards, organised boxing matches were quite common between local pugilists and visiting boxers, and usually for a stake. The stake money may not seem high by today’s standards, but considering most would be lucky to be earning more than 5pd per week, the amounts were well worth fighting for. One of the first recorded was a twenty-round match for a stake of 50pd between Jock O’Donoghue and Ike Murphy, in the new Australian Workers Association Hall in 1908. O’Donoghue won. In May of the same year, a match between Smith (from Victoria) and Lynch (local) of 15 rounds for 25pd stake money was held. The winner was also entitled to take the gate takings. The match was won by Smith. This was followed by a re-match of Ike Murphy and Jock O’Donoghue for a stake of 30pd, but it was not said who won. Matches were usually well attended, and for the winner to make anything from the match, he frequently kept the door takings as well as the stake, so it was imperative that there be a good crowd. This was not the case when in October 1908 O’Neil beat O’Shea in a boxing match that was poorly attended. The year 1911 was a busy one for boxing in Sandstone, with many matches, including one between Sampey and Connolly on 30th August. Sampey won. No further mention of boxing is made until 1915, when in January Mick Brady appeared on the boxing scene in a fight with Tom Triat at Youanmi. However, the fight was stopped by the police, and Triat declared the winner. …../ to be continued
